I love getting mail - especially packages. I just get so excited when I see a little (or not so!) brown box waiting for me. And with good reason, too. Look at the lovely goodies the generous folks over at YouBar sent me!
These are samples? There's so much of it! And I was really surprised by 2/3 of it. When you hear 'YouBar,' you think of bars - but apparently they make trail mix (YouTrailMix) and protein shakes (YouShakes), too!
I looked at their site and they even have healthy, customizable YouCereal!
Here's some info about how YouBar, a company launched in 2006 by healthy-food-loving mother-son founders Ava Bise and Anthony Flynn:

Sounds pretty cool, huh? And that's how YouTrailMix, YouShakes, and YouCereal work, too! They guarantee deliciousness, so if you mix together a bunch of stuff and end up not liking it, you can get a new mix that suits your taste buds better. Cool!
And is it just me, or do those YouShakes (they sent me chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry to try!) sound like they're just dying to be added to a green monster? Um, yes! Weird - it's like they *knew* about my recent green monster kick...rest assured, veggies + YouShake will unite in the near future and I will post the results!
It was mid-morning when I got the package and I was feeling bit snack-y (in Germany, we call it 'den kleinen Hunger'), so I ripped right into the 'Breakfast Bar':
Ingredients: Dates, Egg White Protein, honey, Cocoa, Coffee Crystals, Cinnamon - short and sweet, just the way I like it!
My first bite was like 'wowza! Flavor explosion!' The bitterness of the coffee crystals hits you first, shocking your tastebuds awake, but then the deep cinnamon and a subtle sweet chocolate flood in, milliseconds later and it's just...delicious. :)
It's a chewy moist bar and, though it's not an overly sweet bar, somehow tastes as decadent as a dessert. Also, I don't like my bars super sweet, but I do like them substantial, so this was a big winner for me! Usually, I have to stick a bar on a slice of bread, or eat it with a bunch of other stuff, to get any satiety. But this powered me right through a morning full of laundry and packing and I didn't feel hungry again until a late lunch in the early afternoon! Healthy, tasty, and sustaining? Yes, please!
Come lunch time, I started off with some carrots and dip, as well as a banana. But 'The Best Trail Mix' YouTrailMix was calling my name:
Ingredients: Almonds, Cashews, Sunflower Seeds, Walnuts, Sweetened Blueberries, Cranberries, Sun Drops Original Chocolate Candies
I had some just like that and really enjoyed the mixture of flavors - it tasted really fresh (not like when you buy trail mix and it's already half-stale : I hate that) and the only thing I would change is leave out the cashews and maybe sub dark chocolate chips in for the Sun Drops, as I like my chocolate dark. But with YouTrailMix, you can do that, because you can mix whatever you want into your mix!
First do-it-yourself desserts courtesy of froyo bars, now do-it-yourself trail mixes in portable, pre-portioned baggies (in case you have a hard time figuring out what's the 'right' amount) courtesy of YouBar...I'm liking this trend.
Anyway, I poured the rest of the trail mix on some Chobani:
And my taste buds swooned. These packets are the perfect instant-yogurt-toppers for whenever you're in a rush, at work, at school, etc. I'll have to order some of these come finals period...next May, though, as I won't have finals this fall! :P
I thoroughly enjoyed the trail mix and, as it was the only one that I hadn't tried of the three, I decided to make a protein shake - just with water and ice, not with all the green monster glory (not yet) because I figure I should try it as its intended to be before I put my crazy-awesome spin on it. So here's the 'Breakfast Shake' (I don't care that it's mid-afternoon):
Ingredients: Whey Protein, Organic Cane Juice, Egg White Protein, Organic Banas, Cocoa
It was chocolatey and not-chalky (again, not a fan of chalky protein powders), but boy was it substantial - at only 100 calories? It must be all the protein...If you're trying to lose or maintain weight, I'd recommend this. As I'd rather gain weight, though, I think I should either enrich these somehow or save them for just the occasional treat. After drinking this, I was stuffed to the brim! I don't think I'll be needing dinner until *late* tonight.
I enjoyed the shake, but am definitely looking forward to a green monster version. Yes, this tasted good - but I'm just spoiled from the extra 'oomph' I'm used to from my green monsters. I'll try out a green version tomorrow morning and let you guys know how it goes!
Overall, I just love how YouBar tries to use a lot of organic ingredients, keeps their ingredient lists short, and doesn't go crazy on the sweeteners (like most other bars). I'm a fan. ;)
