2:1 Protein Bar Review, a bag chdi, and an invitation!

We'll start with the bag chdi, because I know y'all are all dying to know what that is.

As some of you might know (and thanks for all the sweet birthday wishes!) I turned 19 yesterday - yippee!

So, since I was going to get a late dinner with friends, but was pretty darn hungry by the time 4pm rolled around (lunch only lasts so long), I invented a fourth meal: chdi

Yes, I'm trying to make chdi happen - the meal between lunch and dinner! Courtesy of HUDS:

A hummus and tabbouleh wrap, an amaaaazingly crisp red apple (go HUDS!), and a side salad with Italian dressing.

I really liked this (tabbouleh is so good!) but it had the problem that makes me shy away from ethnic food.

Onions. Lots of 'em. And lots and lots of garlic in the liberal hummus hiding back in there. Don't get me wrong, I love the taste! But the aftertaste? Not so wild about that funky breath.

Listerine to the rescue!

Luckily, I haven't just been eating ogre breath-inducing foods in my room.

Another 2:1 protein bar! Remember when I reviewed their crazy awesome chocolate bar? Well here is one of their actual protein bars. Like with the chocolate bar, the number on the front is the protein to net carb ratio (not too shabby, if you're trying to watch carbs!).

Like with the other one, the list is longer than some bars - but they have to achieve that ratio some how (I think there's often a tradeoff between ingredient list length and macronutrient contents - take Lara bars. Very few ingredients, but low protein:carb ratio, as well as overall protein content).

I was pretty excited for this. I've never been a huge pretzel fan, but I went through a phase with 100 Grande chocolate bars in high school and, since then, am really digging the chocolate/pretzel/something-sticky-and-sweet combo.

Don't be put off by the color of the chocolate. I was also kind of like 'meh, doesn't look too chocolaty.' No, it definitely was. Unexpectedly so, even:

The inside is chewy and chocolaty (not sure why I was expecting caramel? Maybe those 100 Grande bars...) and really hard to describe, but it worked.

I really enjoyed this a lot, but (unlike the chocolate bar) it did have that slight protein bar flavor. You know what I mean? I like it, though, and it worked. Yum! The satiety factor is good for these bars, and the size is lovely (I like big bars and I cannot lie - millenium throwback, anyone?).

I also tried their 6:1 Cookies and Cream Bar. And then I kicked myself for not trying it earlier. Why didn't I? I mean, I only love cookies and cream ice cream. Oreos on ice cream with pb have been a fave since my Parent Trap days. And this just sounds like a great idea!

Especially since it's certainly a healthier snack than sugar and trans-fat loaded Oreos. Which are definitely okay for now and then, but don't need to be a big part of the daily diet!

These, however?

OH MY GOSH. They definitely just joined my protein bar hall of fame.

They're so chocolaty (just as chocolaty as the chocolate bar they sent) and have these crumbly bits all over the surface that taste just like oreos. But wait until you get to the inside.

Stick to your teeth creamy filling (think Kinderschokolade) on an Oreo-esque layer. This tasted like 100% decadent dessert (the kind that you eat with little spoons from some nice dessert restaurant, while sighing in delight and having a fabulous girl's night). Whoever invented these gets two thumbs up from me!

Seriously, though? I think I'm going to have to make a bar hall of fame. Just so I can put these at the very top. I've tried a LOT of bars, guys. This one? Just do it. These feels like sacrilege, but it even trumped my former favorites by a little, at least as a dessert. And I thought that would never happen!

Okay, now that I'm done gushing: on to the third and final segment of my post.

Teehee, I feel so Larry King. Let me just go grab a cane, some dentures, and a few surgically-enhanced women a third of my age.

Oh, wait. That would make them 6.333 years old. A little sketch, even for Larry...

MOVING ON.

There's going to be this really awesome fashion show (with a secret fashion insider celebrity guest! Past years have honored Anna Sui and Vera Wang!) this coming Friday, April 6 from 10pm to midnight.

If you're a fashion blogger or write for some other publication and will be in the Boston area then (and want to come, but why wouldn't you?) let me know ASAP. There are still a few tickets available, but probably not for long.

Chunks of Energy and Dancing Stars!

Dancing Stars! Ooh, where?

Oh, wait. That's the company name. *Hand to forehead.* Can you tell that I've been doing a bit too much organic chemistry again?

But for good cause! My birthday is this Friday and I've declared it a national holiday!

Or, well, a holiday for me.

Sure, I'll go to lecture. But review sessions? Homework? Hahaha, that's so funny!

And so that I don't die an agonizing death (autopsy result: procrastination) on Saturday Sunday Monday, I need to really be on top of things this week.

Kein Problem! But it definitely means I need a heck lot of energy - tada! Chunks of Energy to the rescue! The timing on the box Dancing Star sent me couldn't have been any better.

Dancing Star makes these little (ORGANIC, RAW, SOY-FREE, VEGAN!) treats called Chunks of Energy. What are they? Pretty much just that. I got to try the Carob Spirulina and Carob Supergreens ones.

This is the Carob Spirulina (aka, my fave). I've never had spirulina before, so I can't really say whether or not you can taste the spirulina (all I know is that spirulina is one of those super-good-for-you super foods). What I can say is this: it was super sweet and flavorful, packed full of textures and like a more intense, condensed Lara bar. Only chocolaty. Like chocolate? But firmer. Still sticky, just not quite as sticky.

All around delicious!

For those of you who want to know what's in it, here's the complete list: Sunflower seeds, honey, carob powder, sesame seeds, crispy rice (rice flour, rice bran, raisin juice from concentrate, honey, sea salt), peanuts, apricots (may contain rice flour), pumpkin seeds, cashews, natural flavors (MSG-free & gluten-free), organic spirulina.

Yay! All stuff you can feel good about! And all stuff that's going to help me out in my pre-birthday intensity. ;)

This is Carob Supergreens. And no, you can't taste the vegetables. Instead, this is like a chewier version of the carob spirulina. And (I know I might be crazy) but this one tasted more mocha/espresso-ish while the above tasted more chocolaty. I guess that might be due to the flavor complexities of carob?

Ingredients: Organic carob powder, organic sunflower seeds, organic agave nectar, organic raisins, organic apricots (may contain organic rice flour), organic pumpkin seeds, organic cashews, organic crispy brown rice (rice flour, rice bran, raisin juice from concentrate, sea salt), organic green spirit mix (organic alfalfa grass, organic oat grass, organic barley grass, organic wheat grass, organic cracked cell chlorella, organic dulse, organic spinach, organic kale, organic parsley, organic dandelion leaf, organic broccoli, organic kamut sprouts, organic cilantro, organic beets, organic carrots, organic apples) organic pure vanilla extract (gluten free), organic orange pure extract (gluten free), organic spirulina.

I had some of each on a slice of bread - they were so intensely flavorful that they really worked well with just the plain bread!

And check out all the superfoods in those. This is how I like my snacks: amazingly good and amazingly good for me.

Not that I don't eat my fair share of not-so-healthy snacks. Health is in the balance! But if you're looking for that quick burst of good-for-you energy, these are pretty great.

I know some of you (especially international readers) see stuff that you want to try in my reviews sometimes, but then you don't know where to find it! Luckily you can order these online. And there are a whole bunch of other flavors!

Have you ever tried Spirulina?

Are you a March baby?

Are you a pre-procrastinator, like me? If I know I'm going to procrastinate at some point, I try to get work done ahead of time so that I don't freak out after the procrastination occurs. Then again...I should be doing work right now, not blogging!

Tata, my lovelies! :)

Balance Bar Review and how to drink tea when it's hot!

I know that for the second part of that (epicly, unnecessarily long) title, you're like 'duh, put some ice in. How dumb is this LLE girl?'

Don't ask. I did manage to trip up stairs today.

On the other hand, I'm actually starting to understand a little bit of organic chemistry (major pat on the back for me!).

Oooookay.

I don't have a freezer, so I don't have ice. Nor do I have air conditioning (yup, love those old dorms) so I can't do the whole 'drink the hot tea, cool off with A/C' thing. But I love tea! So what to do?

Stay tuned.

First: A BALANCE BAR REVIEW! Yay, cue the happy music! May I suggest 'There's Something in the Water' by Brooke Fraser? Instant smiles.

Just sayin'.

Anyway:

I'm usually into sticky protein bar type bars. But today? I was just craving a good old granola bar!

But y'all know I'm too spoiled for Quaker Chewy or even Kashi granola bars.

Oh, foodie problems.

So I tried Balance Bar's Sweet & Salty Chocolate Almond instead! Now, doesn't that just sound delicious?

And it's a pretty darn healthy snack, with 15g of protein (wowza) and 5g of fiber (love it).

It's a granola bar dipped in chocolate. That sounds like a great idea (and doesn't the flavor sound awesome?) but a great idea is nothing without an excellent execution.

Execution? EXCELLENT! It's crunchy and the almonds are almond-y, the chocolate is milk-chocolaty and the bar is a good, filling snack that really held me over through the afternoon organic chemistry review session.

Sounds like it did its job! And sorry, Quaker/Kashi. There's a new granola bar in town. :P

YAY!!! I'm sorry, I just have this thing for bars.

Haha, like you couldn't guess.

Anyway, ready for my hot weather tea solution (sans ice/fridge/freezer/air conditioning)?

Matcha!

It's actually pretty tasty! And y'all know that my head was spinning with ideas for things to mix the pretty green powder into (ice cream? yogurt? baked goods? freezer pops? pancakes? microwave cakes? oohlala). But the snag?

IT'S SO EXPENSIVE. Not cool, matcha. Not cool.

10 packets cost $20 at Whole Foods! I could go get iced tea from Starbucks at that price!

Have you ever tried Matcha? Do you know where to get it cheaper?

What's your favorite type of granola bar?

Luna Protein Review : Double the fun!

As you know, I had my first Luna protein bar recently and loved it. Luckily for me, Mint Chocolate Chip isn't the only flavor they have. The review of the day is of the Luna Protein Chocolate and Luna Protein Chocolate Peanut Butter bars.

The Luna Protein Chocolate is probably the simplest of the group - just pure creamy chocolate.

The chocolate is creamy and smoothy, with a chewy (nougat-ish?) interior. Absolutely no protein bar taste/aftertaste here!

All of the Luna Protein bars, so far, have the texture/taste of a milky way chocolate bar, except with their own flavors (solid milk chocolate, mint chocolate chip, and chocolate peanut butter) instead of the caramel.

YUM.

And, instead of the 260calories, 35g of sugar, 2g of protein, 1g of fiber, and 7g of saturated fat of the milky way bars, they have around 170 calories, 13g of sugar, 12g of protein, 3g of fiber, and and 3.5g of saturated fat each.

Sounds like a pretty great candy bar/snack alternative to me!

Sorry for the poor photo quality of these - this Luna Protein Chocolate Peanut Butter bar was a late night study snack (I see you, organic chemistry).

This one has an interesting texture...

...because it's chock-full of peanuts! This tasted like a combo Snickers/Reese's chocolate bar without the caramel and with the creamy stickiness (does that make sense?) of a Milky Way.

Again: YUM. Oh, and the interior of the bar isn't radioactive - that's my camera flash.

Note to self: Don't eat foods you want to review (so you need a picture) while studying at 1am/2am at night/in the morning. Lighting kind of sucks.

Poor lighting aside, these were both delicious  - but Mint Chocolate Chip is still my favorite. It's so unique and absolutely amazingly delicious!

There are two more flavors of Luna Protein that I haven't tried yet (Cookie Dough and Chocolate Cherry Almond - I can't wait to try them!) but I'm already excited for these bars to trend in the world of protein bars, so that they can develop a gabajillion more flavors for me.

Which flavor sounds best to you?

Pretty Spring 2012 Looks and a Snack

As the weather (finally!) warms up, I'm so excited to transition my wardrobe to spring.

Buh-bye winter jackets and heavy, woolen sweaters! Hello, flirty summer dresses and cute shorts!

Who thought Lauren Conrad would come through for us? But check out the latest from Paper Crown:

Wow, girl.

That is, if she designs the stuff herself. What do you think?

Opening Ceremony also has my vote:

Have you seen their bee-inspired looks? Cute, but I don't know if I'd wear them.

I like the one to the far-right the best. What a lovely and ethereal dress. :)

I'm so excited for sandals (though, as a college student, I won't be rocking these Jeffrey Campbell heels - but a girl can dream, right?).

Okay, but how about we look at a few things that we could actually afford (without sacrificing too much of the textbook budget, that is), too?

$24.99 at Charlotte Russe - I haven't quite decided whether or not I like this, but the shoulders certainly are interesting...

But I know I like this:

$19.80 at Forever 21 - super cute with the shoes! While floral prints are a mixed bag for me, I do like the hi-lo trend that seems to be emerging in skirts (and shirts!) this spring. Especially with those cute sandals!

And a little piece of exciting fashion news (not that it's really that new anymore):

VERSACE FOR H&M THIS SPRING!!!!

AH! So excited, especially if that's any sign of what's to come. :)

Oh, but I said there'd be a snack, too, right?

I'm a big fan of the nimble bars. They're small and great for when you just want a little something sweet or a snack to hold you over to the next meal.

The peanut butter flavor is just as good as the yogurt orange swirl.

Yum.

What are you most excited for this season?

Which look/piece, above, do you like the best?

The Fudge You Thought Was A Protein Bar: A Quest Bar Review

Hi guys!

Spring break is heeeeerrrrrrreeeeeee! I hope you've been enjoying the improved quality of my food as much as I have. Well, you haven't seen that much of it yet, but just wait. My WIAW is so much better than any that I've done in ages.

And yes, I've already written my WIAW. Yes, I know it's only Monday. Don't judge. :)

Anyway, in between dazzling myself with my culinary masterpieces, I have another protein bar review for you! Y'all know I love my bars. ;)

Anyway, this time it's the Quest protein bar.

Or is it?

I was all, 'oh, cool, protein bar samples!' And then 'whaaaaaaaat?' Because that bar certainly was nothing like a protein bar.

Nope, nope, nope. It was straight-up strawberry cheesecake fudge!

Seriously - sweet, chewy, rich and flavors so right! The mouth feel is an intersection of grandma's fudge and southern saltwater taffy. It definitely hits the ahhhhhh spot.

And with flavor and texture so sinful and dessert-like (not kidding, I actually had to pause to do a happy dance on more than one occasion while deliciating in the bar (it's a word, seriously!)

This was really good, but this was even better:

I mean, that combo - come on! Chocolate peanut butter is a match made in heaven!

Like a huge Reese's (if Reese's had only 1g of sugar, were sweetened with stevia, and packed not only 20g of protein but also 68% of your fiber RDI - no big deal).

Words won't suffice, so here's this instead: MMMMMHHHMMMMMMHMMMMMHHHHHMMM.

Then I had the chocolate brownie (these were all on different days, of course - these bars are really filling from all that protein and fiber!)

...which is actually a really fudgy chocolate brownie.

Just like the one from your elementary school lunches.

No joke. Try it...

...you'll see.

Paired with a tangerine or a pear, they're becoming a new favorite bedtime snack.

The lemon cream pie is just as sweet, sticky, chewy, and fantastic as the rest. It has this tangy, refreshing lemon flavor that's really quite good - I dusted the bar in peanut flour for an interesting flavor contrast and it was quite tasty. ;)

And then there was the Berry Bliss bar ingested while trying to ingest orgo for the midterm I have coming up:

It really is quite blissful...

...and the berry flavor is nice and strong...

It's a delicious fruity dessert...

I mean, protein bar?

And let's not forget the apple pie.

To me, pie is all about the crust. So, since these are chewy-sweet bars, I'd call it more of apple crumble that apple pie...

But apple crumble has a special spot in my heart stomach, too. It's sweet and buttery and apple-y and basically makes me wonder how this can possibly be considered a protein bar. There is absolutely NONE of that protein bar taste (you know what I mean).

Frankly, at this point I was pretty scared to check out the nutritionals. I mean, how could this possibly be anything that I could actually consider a healthy midday/late night snack? But let's take a look at the Berry Bliss bar, since they all ended up being pretty similar nutritionally and this is the one that I happen to have a nutrition fact snapshot of:

BAM. Check it out. No sugar alcohols, no sugar, no soy protein, and most of my daily fiber. Not to mention, pretty good stats for fat and a whopping TON of protein. Oh yeah, stock me up!

The ingredients list is pretty short and contains stuff like whey protein isolate (sorry, vegans), milk protein isolate, almond butter (!!!), water, sea salt, and.... STEVIA!

This is only the second bar brand that I've ever been able to find that's sweetened with stevia and I'm thrilled. I know my other stevia fans out there are thrilled, too. :)

In addition to strawberry cheesecake, chocolate peanut butter, berry bliss, apple pie, lemon cream pie, and chocolate brownie, there's also vanilla almond crunch, PB&J (!), peanut butter supreme, cinnamon roll, and coconut cashew.

For now, I'm off to pat my tummy and sigh in delight.

Then I'll go use some of that protein to build some muscle - bringing rollerskating back into fashion! Me and my just-turned-seven year old sister are so going to trend it.

Anyone else have a Skateland date with a first grader tonight?

 No?

Didn't think so. It's soooo hard to be this cool.

Have you ever tried Quest bars?

Which flavor sounds best to you?

Do you rollerskate or rollerblade?
