Jen Kao S/S '12 Collection

So this is a little overdue.

But better late than never, right?

If you've been reading LLE for a while now (and thanks, by the way, to everyone who does!) you may remember that there was a super-cool fashion show at Harvard earlier this month. You just know that I was all over that from the very first minute that I heard about it!

Seriously, what's better than fashion shows? No, but really?

Anyway, the featured designer was Jen Kao. If you're fashion-obsessed, like myself, you probably know this young designer and (as must logically ensue) adore her. If you don't, though, here's why you should (I'm going to limit myself to the collection that she showed at the Harvard fashion show, her spring/summer 2012 collection, as this would otherwise become an epic post).

She's not afraid to go for interesting colors, prints, and patterns.

Because it is so easy to make cheap imitations of almost anything today, a lot of people are saying that prints and unique fabrics are going to be the stuff of the next wave of haute couture - it's the only kind of thing that needs to be painstakingly created and so it remains exclusive to the select few that can afford it.

On one hand I wonder if it's really good to create expensive fashion with the goal of appearing expensive. On the other hand, I do think that there's something to be said for maintaining the 'high art' sense of haute couture by keeping the artistry in it and not having it mass-replicated in Chinese sweat shops. Imagine doing that to a Picasso. Do you know what I mean?

She takes risks, but nails it every time. Her collection is light, airy, fashionable, fitted, loose, edgy, modern, retro - all at the same time.

She keeps fashion fun and young, not getting caught up in what others have done and what others are doing. Everything is uniquely her. And even if somethings look a little arts & crafty, they all look AMAZINGLY so.

Yes, it's high fashion - but it's accessible high fashion. I would totally wear this out on the street! I absolutely love the mixing of the school girl style, with the edgier top and the bad*** sneakers.

Seriously, though - what's not to love?

Also, she's just genuinely a sweet person (at least in the half an hour or so that I had with her). Love it!

Currently snacking on:

A blueberry acai Balance Bar.

As I've mentioned before, I tend to prefer chewy protein bars. I really am a bar aficionado, though, and believe in equal opportunity for all bars.

These are great for when that chew granola bar craving hits - with 15g of protein, 4g of fiber, and 7g of whole grains, they sure beat the Chewy bar of my childhood.

The blueberry-acai flavor was interesting (in a good way) with the blueberry featured as the predominant flavor, but the acai adding that subtle something extra that really brought the bar up to awesome. The yogurt coating was the icing on the cake bar.

And for when you want a chewy, chocolaty bar (um, always?):

The Balance Bar is very Snickers like in every way...

Except nutritionally - no sugar crash here. Instead, it kept me energized through the most massive laundry session EVER.

Don't get behind on your laundry. Seriously.

But if you do - have a yummy treat to power you through. :)

Or this one:

Which actually does taste liked a bulked-up-Thin-Mint-meets-Andes.

Am I weird because I like bars better than cake? Y'all know I love bars - sooooo yummy!

2:1 Protein Bar Review: Peanut Butter Brownie Time!

First off: can anyone believe that it's already almost May? Where is 2012 going? Where is my sophomore year of college going? How is time flying like this?

But really.

But so much has already happened in 2012! And now I can add finding a new fave brownie to the list. Thanks, 2:1 protein bars! :)

That's a little fuzzy, sorry - it's a big bar with 300 calories, a quarter of your daily iron needs (I'm looking at you, fellow veg*ns!), and a whopping 30 g of protein. WOWZA.

Candy bar on the outside...

Peanut butter topped brownie on the inside...

...tasty through and through. Not to mention filling! This kept me full and energized through a crazy afternoon of busy-ness!

Haha, the college girl's life. :P

But when it includes treats like this?

Bring it on.

Oh, and if you don't love chocolate (what's wrong with you? let's not be friends...kidding!) :

Then there's white crispy crunch.

Which really delicious (think buttercream frosting on a reallllly good birthday cake - not the weird food coloring kind).

With crumbles for the actual cake part of the birthday cake effect. Haha, do you know anyone who likes their cake:frosting ratio like that?

Um, everyone?

But warning: this is just as decadent as it is delicious. I could only eat about half in one sitting (which is saying something, because y'all KNOW how much I can eat).

That's a good thing, though. It means you get to eat it twice!

On a non-food note: I've been trying to reply to everyone's comments individually since I started the blog, but I've kind of been thinking that I'd rather just focus more on posts than comment responses. I love reading all of your comments, though! So:

Does it matter if I comment back or don't? Would you still comment if I didn't reply? I'd never stop reading them, of course! They make my day!

What's your favorite peanut butter-and-?? combo?

Any fun summer plans?

Chia Love and PureFit Reviews

This post isn't going to be super-wordy. If a picture can say a thousand words, why not use pictures to describe the deliciousness of recent eats?

For today, I'm sticking to recent chia seed creations and four new (to me) PureFit bars.

This one gets to come first, because I'm doing the opposite of 'save the best for last' today. WOW. I really enjoyed all of the PureFit flavors, but this is amazing!

It's like a half-baked peanut butter cookie with crunchy peanuts!

Chia pudding (new addiction) made with blueberries, honey, and vanilla almond milk:

A different bowl, but the same stuff (because this is was so good it had to be repeated):

Close-up! I love blueberries. Of the (fresh) berries, I'm currently liking, in this order:

1) Raspberries
2) Blueberries
3) Blackberries
4) Strawberries
5) Boysenberries

The chocolate brownie PureFit bar was quite tasty, too (oh, and for those of you with special diets - note that these are gluten free and vegan!)

And their ingredients lists are pretty decent.

I wouldn't say that it tasted like a brownie (at least not to me). The texture isn't quite brownie, nor is the flavor. But that doesn't mean it wasn't delicious - it was!

It was just delicious in a 'ooh, here's a bunch of chocolaty nut butter in chewy form' kind of way. Works for me!

Chia pudding made with blueberries, vanilla almond milk, brown sugar, and matcha.

I used too much milk, so it was a bit runny. How to solve this problem? Throw cereal in!

Problem solved, deliciousness achieved. :) If only organic chemistry were this easy...

I liked this so much that I made the next batch runny on purpose - Kashi Heart to Heart joined the party!

While peanut butter crunch PureFit was a cleeear favorite, Almond Crunch is really tasty, too.

Similar ingredients list (there isn't too much variation between them):

And a nice almond flavor with the signature PureFit chewy texture (and crunchy bits for a party in my mouth!)

This was delicious, but it didn't have PureFit Peanut Crunch's half-baked-cookie oomph factor. How do they do that???

Still: a very yummy bar.

And I'm pretty sure that, with this granola crunch bar, I have tried every single flavor of Pure Fit Bars.

It was a delicious journey.

This bar is best enjoyed with a handful of berries on the side. If you're a granola, or an oatmeal & nut butter, fan, you'll really like this bar.

Alright, now I actually do need to go work on my stats project.

Tata for now, my lovelies! :)

Have you tried PureFit bars?

(not) Reese's Chia Pudding Recipe

(not) Reese's Chia Pudding
* 1/4 c. chia seeds
* 1 c. milk (non-dairy - like coconut, soy, or almond - is just fine)
* 2 Tbsp. peanut flour
* 20 drops NuNatural Cocoa Bean Extract Stevia (or 1-2 tablespoons sugar)
OPTIONAL: Toppings (like chocolate chips, peanut butter, frozen/fresh berries, sliced banana, granola, etc. - go wild!)

1) Put chia seeds in a bowl. Try not to think of the chia pets you had as a kid.

2) Add all other ingredients (except optional toppings). Cover, let sit in fridge overnight.

3) Stir, be amazed by the new tapioca pudding consistency!

4) Add toppings...

5) Devour. YUMMMMM!

I can't believe how easy, filling, and delicious this is! How have I not discovered this earlier?? It definitely beats Reese's cereal for breakfast.
