Getting Revved On Juice!

Want to try some juices that are actually just pure vegetables? Curious, or you really have no sweet tooth?

On Juice has juices that are the truest to the idea of a pure vegetable green juice that I have seen in all of my juice sampling.

They have a variety of juices that you can order individually or as part of their juice cleanses (as well as several cleanse packages that are designed to allow you to combine solid food and their juices - perfect for busy people, pregnant women, etc.) and there's something for everyone.

If you're into milder, sweeter juices, you'll enjoy juices like their Sublime (a mild green juice lightly sweetened with apples) or their Lemon Aid.

The Lemon Aid is pretty amazing, it's a sweet and spicy lemonade where the kick of the cayenne pepper and natural sourness of the lemon combine delightfully with the sweetness of the agave nectar to  create an energizing, refreshing mid-afternoon pick-me-up. This one is great to add as a daily drink, even outside of a cleansing routine!

The Unbeetable is a beet, carrot, and celery juice that, unlike other root juices, isn't mixed with fruit juice. It's more intense because of that, but quickly becomes an acquired taste with the interesting flavors of the ginger and lime!

The Upskale, on the other hand, takes quite a bit of adjusting. I am not at all a routine sweet juice drinker and prefer vegetable juices to fruit juices, as I find that fruit juice can become kind of cloyingly sweet when you're drinking a lot of it. But this one, along with the Deep Green, were even a bit much for me!

I ended up sweetening both of those with agave nectar myself and then found that they were quite taste. I think the addition of the chlorella to the Deep Green is what made it have such an unusual, and intensely green, flavor - but it's a drink where you feel yourself getting healthier as you drink it!

Placebo effect? Perhaps a bit, but there's no doubt that you're flooding your body with nutrients and that's never a bad thing. Ordering some juices to keep in the fridge and drink here and there is a great option.

Unlike a lot of other natural juice companies, these juices don't expire after just three days and it's thus not necessary to drink them back-to-back, as in a cleanse. There's no pressure to finish your juices fast with this, so you can drink them as you please!

I love that self-determination. After all, I like having things my way.

It's recommended that you drink the juices within 6 days for optimal nutrient content, but they stay good for three weeks. That's great news to me, because it means you can order an assortment of your favorite juices and keep them in the fridge so that you can have a juice here and there, whenever you notice that you're feeling a little bleh or haven't had much produce in your diet lately.

Each juice is about 200-300 calories of powerful nutrition (the label is only for half a bottle, but you're intended to drink the whole thing at once).

It's perfect for this time of year for that very reason!

How often do you drink juice?

What's your favorite kind of juice?

What drinks are in your fridge right now?

Fuel Up Without Denial - Life Force Juice's Fresh Take

Juices has been becoming ever more popular recently, experiencing a real renaissance since the first real juicing crave in the US in the 1970s. Unlike back then, juices today can be convenient (delivered) and actually tasty (aka, don't taste like mowed grass).

Ooh, look - a big cooler and a warm insulated bag!
Life Force Juice is breaking a new frontier in juicing by trying to make fresh and healthy juices accessible to all sorts of people in all sorts of lifestyles. They believe that juice isn't just for prissy people with light schedules who can afford to sit around all day, starving and faint. Life Force Juice says juice can, and should, be fore athletes, busy college students, professionals, and pretty much anyone!

Their juices aren't a cleanse, they're a system of juices that you drink with and between meals to improve nutritional intake and nourish your whole body through and through. They don't have rules, they don't tell you what to eat and what not to eat, they don't have an order in which you have to drink your juices - for fans of the intuitive eating movement, this is definitely the juice provider for you.

Beet Poet - Beet, Apple, Cucumber. 100% Organic.
I felt great during all my days of enjoying their juices, teas, and smoothies (another way in which they are more well-rounded - you get some fiber in your banana-licious smoothies!) and, because I could eat normally, wasn't at all hungry or tired. I had more energy than usual and found myself being really productive. That's great any time of year, but especially around final exams period and the holidays!

Vibrant Green - Swiss Chard, Cucumber, Celery, Apple. 100% Organic.
With Life Force Juice it's easier than ever to stay healthy during the holidays without stressing, being that annoying picky eater, or giving up your favorite holiday treats. You'll feel better because your body is getting the nutrients it needs without having to obsess about where you'll squeeze in some fruits and veggies.

The Classic - Carrot, Apple, Ginger. 100% Organic.
The juices are all sweet, but naturally so from apple and orange juices, and the smoothies are thick and creamy.

Carrot Cake Smoothie - Homemade Vanilla Almond Milk, Carrot Juice, Carrot, Banana, Ginger, Spices.
The Carrot Cake smoothie tasted absolutely dessert-like, like a holiday milkshake, but is packed with carrots and carrot juices (creamy from the banana and vanilla almond milk). My mom loves carrot cake and I couldn't help but think of her as I enjoyed this smoothie (I really want to call it a shake, because that's what it tastes like).

Greenya Colada Smoothie - Pineapple, Banana, Dark Greens (Seasonal, often Swiss Chard or Kale), and Coconut. 100% Organic.
The Lala Berry and Greenya Colada smoothies are also delicious, creamy, and  make very satisfying snacks!

Lala Berry Smoothie - Banana, Strawberry, Blueberry, and Homemade Almond Milk. 100% Organic.
The Life Force Infusion Package also includes teas that are steeped overnight to get the full benefits of the herbs.

The teas were very unique in flavor, from the Profound Health Tea to the Deep Mineral Tea to the Lucid Dream Tea. That last one knocked me right out and I slept so much more soundly than I had in ages, even on just a mattress on the floor!

Student problems.

Anyway, the flavors are very intense, likely due to the intensive steeping process, and can be a bit much to start. I sweetened them with some honey and then they were really great!

My only complaint is that the jars, while absolutely adorable and so hipster-chic/eco-stylish, would have been better if labeled. Some of the teas weren't, so it was a guessing game to figure out what I was drinking. But it was all great stuff, so I suppose it doesn't really matter what I was drinking when (with the exception of the Lucid Dream Tea)!

Some were labeled, so I used the process of elimination!
Life Force packages have healthy sugars, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals to heal your body from the inside out, if you've been neglecting your health or just feeling under the weather, and they're delicious to boot. Not bad at all!

Wise Apple - Apple, Sage, Ginger

At the moment, Life Force Juice products are exclusive to the Boston metro area, but you can check here to see if they're available near you and to order some online!

Do you drink juice?

What juice do you drink most often?

Do you sleep soundly? I generally do sleep pretty soundly, except on planes and car trips, because I'm a sleep-deprived student. What can I say? See above: student problems.

Thanksgiving Table Settings!

Since I've heard this odd question several times over the past few days: guys, Thanksgiving is November 28. Less than a week away!

Okay, admittedly the people asking when Thanksgiving is were all international students. What can I say?

Welcome to 'murica, pull up a seat, and go for the drumstick (do Tofurkeys have drumsticks?).

American Pride Eagle - this is - murica

Anyway, those who are hosting Thanksgiving dinner are probably already planning for the big day. I know that I'm looking forward to the school break! Even if it's primarily to catch up on school work and sleep.

The food is, of course, a big part of of Thanksgiving dinner. But there are a lot of other things to prepare, as well!

funny-Snow-White-and-the-seven-dwarfs

Appalled Snow White or not, there are some other things to think about than just the food (though the food is important, too). Like table settings. They help turn a good dinner into a great feast by letting the eye eat with!

Here are a few that caught my eye!

Thanksgiving Table Setting
This traditional, hunt-themed table setting is perfect for those who like to hunt down the biggest turkey in the grocery store, roast it over a backyard fire pit, beat on their chests a bit, and maybe hunt down another beast after dinner with a mob of angry villagers.

Er...maybe redact that last bit. I guess I'm in a Disney mood today.

Anyway, to keep the hunt from verging over into pure Neanderthal, pretty candle holders and nice utensils and glassware keep the dinner classy. This look is as well suited for a large feast as a small gathering!

Orange and Brown Fall Table Setting

If you're more one for simplicity, don't "use antlers in all [your] decorating," or just want to have some space on the table for the actual food, a simple table setting can work just as well. A good wooden table is pretty much essential here, as it's a more natural look. A few pumpkins, squashes, or gourds are great touches, as are harvest-colored napkins and a foliage-based centerpiece.

Make one yourself with some pretty long grasses and a bit of twine, if you're either artistically inclined or up for a fun holiday challenge. If you can, corral some kids into helping you. Once you let it slip that they were involved, everyone will confuse the kids' adorableness with the appearance of the centerpiece, making it look a thousand times better.

Thanksgiving Table Setting

Or you can go for the happy medium.

The metallic accents even start hinting at Christmas - YAY.

But I know there's only so long that one can talk about table settings, so I'll let you go and look for food.

Happy Thanksgiving day! (35 pics + 1 gif)

Review: November Bestowed Box with A Discount!

I always enjoy Bestowed Box and they never fail to put together a great box full of a variety of healthy snacks, so I was excited to try their November box!

This box definitely didn't disappoint!

Don't you just love that excited feeling when you open up a package and you're not completely sure what you'll find inside.

That feeling only gets better when you open up the package to find all of this! Um, hello there chocolate

I'm always impressed by how much variety they manage to pack into that orange box (roughly the size of a 'medium' flat rate shipping box, for those of you who are familiar with USPS shipping). There's salty, there's sweet, there are beverages, complete health-nut foods (oh hey, chia seeds).

This time, they even had a frozen treat in there!

Well, soon-to-be frozen treat. Since the box ships at room temperature, the Life Ice clearly wasn't frozen yet. But it comes in a tray of 24 ice cubettes (1 tray is a serving) that freeze just as they are. There's no prep work, you just put the whole tray in the freezer. Perfect for a lazy cook busy student like me.

Minor rant - why is pre-Thanksgiving always a period for professors to give that last pre-finals hard-core push of papers, exams, etc.? Sleep, I miss you!

It's not like I've had time to exercise since...um, summer? But for those who do, Skratch is a nutrient-packed sports drink mix that's natural, unlike many on the market, and mixes easily into water for a post-exercise pick-me-up.

I wonder if it works as well for a post-all-nighter, pre-class pick-me-up? Oh Harvard, I love you. But sleep? Can we maybe discuss adding that back to my life, please?

CHOCOLATE COCONUT WATER. I've never had coconut water before (as far as I can recall) but this is absolutely delicious out of the fridge. I had no idea what to expect (chocolate water? That doesn't sound too great) but trust me, it's a treat. I had it fresh out of the fridge on the way to class one morning this week and it was so deliciously dark chocolate, but still refreshing!

I definitely agree with the recommendation on the bottle to enjoy it cold.

Quest bars are just great at any temperature. They're seriously my favorite bar, Quest Nutrition can simply do no wrong - have you tried the peanut butter cups? OMG LOVE.

Do you think Santa knows how to make Quest peanut butter cups, white chocolate raspberry bars, and chocolate peanut butter bars?

Anyway, back to the rest of the box.

These crackers are really tasty! I'm definitely more of a sweet than a salty snack person, but these gluten-free multi-seed crackers were definitely very seedy (=yummy) and they were perfectly thin and crisp and crunchy. They're pretty salty, but not more than other crackers, and the size/shape is perfect for scooping up dips. Though they're honestly tasty all by themselves!

Have you heard of Nektar Honey? Or Eat Green Tea? The former is honey in crystallized form (the health benefits and, more importantly, flavor without the sticky mess for your tea!) and the latter is green tea where you can eat the actual leaves for added health benefits and to increase the amount of antioxidants absorbed. Pretty cool! I love green tea.

The Perfect Fuel Chocolate doesn't need much explanation and I've already reviewed it here. But chocolate. Seriously, what's not to love?

Now that you're appropriately excited/really wanting some Bestowed Box action in your lives, I have great news.

Elf

To make your holidays all the merrier, you can get your first box for only $10 with the discount code HELLOTEN105. Hurry to use the code, because it expires on November 30!

I'll give you a minute.

crazy dance

You're welcome.

That's pretty great deal, considering all the treats that you get to try - and especially when you consider the great healthy new snacks they introduce you to. I review quite a lot of snacks, so I probably know of more snacks that most people do. But even I have managed to be surprised by at least a few snacks in every box that I've tried. And all the tried-and-true snacks are also always delicious!

5 Things To Make Thanksgiving Dinner More Carefree

The holidays are a great time for friends and family to get together and catch up, especially when a lot of us are separated for much of the year. For some, however, Thanksgiving dinner prep can make anticipating the day a little stressful.

That's no fun!

And holidays are meant to be fun. So here are some quick fixes to simplify your Thanksgiving dinner preparation and cleanup process, so that you can focus on enjoying the once-a-year delightful holiday!

1) Disposable Roasting Pan

Sure, it might not be the most environmentally-friendly, eco-responsible choice out there, but this is one of those cases where I plead moderation and make up for my eco-irresponsibility by being a little more cautious somewhere else (like making sure to switch off lights when I leave the room). The last thing you want to have to bother with after a delicious Thanksgiving dinner, when your stomach is full and everyone is settling down in the living room to digest their pecan pie (a la mode, of course) is scrub away at a real pan.

wash dishes he says what could go wrong he says

Just say no to proper bakeware.

2)  Large Cooler

Your fridge is going to be so full with sides, spreads, desserts, and so on that there won't be any space for drinks. Filling a large cooler with ice (you can buy a big bag for just a dollar or two) is a great way to keep drinks cool without causing a fridge-valance.

1950s overstuffed fridge
Because no full fridge is that neat.
3) Portion Measuring Spoons

What a great way to minimize clean up! I know having to wash endless measuring cups and spoons, as well as all the cooking spoons, can be a real hassle when I'm putting together a nice meal with lots of different parts and where I have to follow a recipe.

These are a great time-saving invention!

4) Pandora

This might be a bit of an unexpected addition to the list, but trust me - almost everything is less stressful and more fun with music! So give your Thanksgiving dinner prep a soundtrack and let yourself really enjoy it.

gif LOL funny gifs music funny gif true cleaning relatable so relatable

If you're really festive (y'all know I've been in the holiday spirit since just before Halloween) you can tune in to the Christmas station on Pandora!

5) A Store-Bought Pecan Pie

Baking desserts is always great, but if you're so busy with the meal - just get the pie from the store. I think they taste just as good, sometimes better! Making a crust is just so time consuming and it's important that the pie is just right since, in my opinion (and that's obviously what matters, guys, come on) it's the best part of the meal.

I've pretty much always had a store-bought pecan pie and I love it!

Having given you five ways to skimp, here's a commonly recommended 'trick' that I recommend avoiding: don't serve canned and bottled drinks just to try to make cleanup easier. It's expensive, environmentally unfriendly, detracts from the perceived quality of the meal, and only really saves you labor if you don't have a dishwasher.

If you're an adult who cooks and don't have a dishwasher? Um, GET ONE. Now.

Also, THANKSGIVING GUYS. IS ALMOST HERE. Which means it's almost Christmas!

And me on Christmas morning?

surprised baby

Actually, that's me all December. Christmas itself is the best present ever!

A SMART Bar!

Snack bars are a great option to stay fueled on the go, whether you're busy with work, school, travel, holiday prep, or any combination of those! I love protein bars, but sometimes it's nice to mix things up with regular granola bars, too.

I've reviewed some of Detour's delicious protein bars before, but they have a whole new type of bar out this fall! The new Detour SMART bar is their first venture into the natural foods market, so it's pretty exciting!

What exactly is the SMART bar? It's a gluten-free oatmeal bar that is currently available in two flavors, blueberry and apple cinnamon.

When I first heard of the bars, I was thinking they would be like granola bars or baked fruit-filled bars.

I was surprised to find that they really weren't!

Both bars were delicious, not at all artificial or malt-y tasting, but they were a sticky consistency, more like a nut butter-based bar than your usual granola bar. They have a sweet, tasty greek yogurt drizzle on top.

Detour keeps the sugar really low for a granola bar (just 4g!) with stevia. The bars are also pretty small, so they're good if you're just looking for a little something or as a snack bar for kids.

They're small but tasty! Both flavors were great, but the blueberry was my favorite.

It even had little bits of dried blueberry in it, which was fun!

Have you tried the new SMART bars?

What's keeping you busy this week?

Have you started your holiday prep yet?

Five Facts Friday

Happy Friday! Friday is definitely one of the best days of the week (though Saturday gives it a run for its money, Sunday is Fun Day, and Thursdays are pretty great for me this semester, too).

Anyway, this post isn't about ranting about how great over half of the weekdays are. It's a holiday-themed Five Facts Friday!

Why? Because holidays are AWESOME and it's finally that time of year again!

Fact #1: Starbucks is not losing the holiday-themed beverage market anytime soon.

Have you heard of the new Caramel Brulee flavor? It comes as both a latte and a frappucino (but why would you ever choose a latte when you could have a frappe? Even in winter?) and is already climbing to cult status. Maybe it's the next pumpkin hit?

Holiday Drinks

They also have Peppermint Mocha, Gingerbread Latte, Eggnog Latte, and the usual creamy hot chocolates, so they're not going anywhere fast.

Fact #2: Dunkin' Donuts still can't hold a flame snowflake to Krispy Kreme.

Okay, so I'm a little biased. What can I say? I'm a southern girl and Krispy Kreme is just better than the Yankee alternative. But seriously!
Krispy Kreme Snowman
The new Snowman Doughnuts are adorable, y'all.

Also, slightly related request - can we please, please, pretty please have a white Christmas this year? Living in NC, I haven't had one in ages. But even in the north, snow always seems to come after (occasionally before, but sadly generally after) Christmas. I love snow in December, but snow in January and February is often just cold and wet. Bah-humbug!

Fact #3: There is entirely not enough Home Alone in the ABC Family 25 Days of Christmas Line-Up

So I've already checked out the schedule.

ABC Family 25 Days of Christmas Programming

What can I say? I'm a tad Christmas obsessed.

Or maybe more than a tad.

I love the new Christmas movies as much as the next girl, but the Home Alone movies (yes, all of them) are such a part of a traditional Christmas for me! Why is there barely any Home Alone on the schedule? WHY?

Fact #4: Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is still going strong with the 87th annual parade this year!

It's a lovely tradition and the lineup looks pretty great this year, as usual.

The Mickey the Sailor (C) balloon floats down Central Park West during the 86th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York November 22, 2012.
From the 2012 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
For the sake of the parade alone, I hope the department store stays in business for a long time!

Fact #5: Time is flying this semester!

I've said it before and I'm saying it again - this fall is passing in a flash! I'm not sure why it's going by so fast, but I can't say that I mind. It's been really fun (if fast!) so far!

What is(are) your favorite day(s)  of the week?

Have you started your Thanksgiving prep yet?

Is anyone else already elbow-deep in Christmas movies and music? #sorryimnotsorry since October

A Nutty Review - Tru-Nut!

Those of you who've been reading my blog for a while know that I'm obsessed with all things nutty. Nuts are delicious!

Or maybe I'm just a nut.

Anyway, I recently discovered a new nutty product to add to my already nutty pantry, stockpiled full of almond butters, roasted cashews, salted brazil nuts, crunchy peanut butters, and so on.

Tru-Nut is perfect for when you want to take that baked good (yay, it's baking season again!) up to the next level, or make a peanutty sauce and don't have a heating device to melt your peanut butter, or you've already eaten a small nation's nut rations that day and still want more nuttiness but your stomach can't handle much more fat. Even healthy fat can cause stomachaches - been there, done that (a lot).

Tru-Nut comes in three flavors, original, cinnamon, and chocolate. I tried the original and cinnamon and really enjoyed them! While a peanut powder product will never get the mouthfeel of peanut butter right (but that's what peanut butter is for) because of the reduced fat content, when fat is what causes that smooth, creamy, rich mouthfeel, I think these are perfect for adding to shakes or baking with.

If you do want to make a nice sauce, they also mix up really easily without any big clumping drama and the peanut flavor, if not the peanut butter mouthfeel, is spot on. It's a great product for what it is!

I also enjoyed the addition of the cinnamon to the cinnamon-flavored one. Original and chocolate are generally the only options you have with this sort of product, but cinnamon works so well with nuts! Especially if you're also including honey or jam (and why wouldn't you? It's a great combination).

With just a few natural ingredients (roasted peanuts, sugar, sea salt, and (in the case of the cinnamon one) cinnamon, it's also nutritionally sound and doesn't have any of those icky fillers that light spreads usually are packed with. Overall, I'm a fan!

What's your favorite thing to make with peanut powder?

Do you make a special breakfast on the weekends?

What are your plans for Thanksgiving?

Black Friday Hot List

Thanksgiving, and the subsequent Black Friday, are still a little over 2.5 weeks away - but some Black Friday ads have already been either released or leaked!

Seriously, it sounds like we're talking about government secrets here - leaking ads. As if the stores don't want that publicity, anyway!

I generally don't go shopping on Black Friday, I haven't been in probably the last five years, if not more, but Black Friday can be a great time to go shopping.

If you love shopping, it can be really fun. If you don't love shopping, more and more stores are starting to put deals online, so that crowd-wary shoppers can still get some big savings.

I think sifting through ads is incredibly fun, so I've gone ahead and picked out a few must-buy items for the 2013 Black Friday shopping season.

Some of these are bound to be on a lot of peoples' hot lists, so you'll probably have to either wake up early or be one of those crazy people who camps out in front of Walmart after everyone else goes to sleep on Thursday night and risks a concussion to barrel through the front doors right as they open.

But you know, sacrifices. Priorities. Shopping.

I'm kind of bummed that it appears as though Macy's will be offering a 'shop all night option' and opening doors at 8pm on Thanksgiving. That's definitely going to be cutting into some peoples' Thanksgiving celebrations and that's just wrong. Leave Thanksgiving alone and shop on Friday, folks.

But if you have to support Macy's (I know I won't be, if they really do end up opening their doors on Thanksgiving night), here are some deals that the leaked ads say they'll be offering.

A Keurig for $99.99, usually $174.99. To get this deal, you'll have to get there before 1pm on Friday, when the price jumps to $119.99.

A Bella rotator waffle iron for $9.99 after a $10 rebate, also a doorbuster deal. After 1pm on Friday it jumps back up to $29.99, which is still a sales price (but a lower one).

This next one is just for the food bloggers out there - always wanted a real Magic Bullet (not a knock-off, like I have)? You can get one for $39.99 with 4 mugs before 1pm or $49.99 after 1pm (compare to the usual $79.99). Not bad!

And because good deals alone can't keep you going without some sustenance for the body, as well, Macy's is offering 20% off all Godiva chocolates as a doorbuster deal. It's never too early for chocolate!

Haha, I am my mother's daughter.

Another ad that leaked pretty earlier, by late October I believe, is the Neiman Marcus ad. But let's be real - those aren't actually deals, just cute clothes.

Because $1195 for a jersey dress that looks like Michael Kors pulled it out of Snooki's Las Vegas party bag?

Moving on.

Origins isn't blowing anyone's mind with its discounts this year, either, but hey - it's fancy face stuff. So.

My aunt swears by Origins and she has great skin. I'm not sure if it's genetic and by God, I'd be praying that it was if we were blood-related (but, alas, she married my dad's brother and we don't actually share DNA), but she's one of those women whose age is pretty indeterminable because of her great skin.

I don't know if that's actually at all due to her religious use of Origins, but on the off-chance that it is, Origins does have some fairly decent package details. Their Morning to Midnight set, for example, is on sale for $52 (down from its $97 value), which isn't actually a terrible price for a day cream, a night cream, an eye cream, and an intensive hydration mask.
ORIGINS Morning To Midnight set

I'm sure more great deals will be posting soon as other stores start actually releasing their ads. The Target, Walmart, and Sam's Club ads are probably among some of the most talked-up ones, so I'm looking forward to seeing what they put out there. Who knows? Maybe they'll manage to coax me away from my warm, cuddly bed and all-consuming textbooks.

Probably not (I love you, Harvard).

What are your Black Friday traditions?

Who do you generally shop with on the holiday?

What store is at the top of your list this year?
