Recipe Review: Best Ever Rugelach

Note that the title of this recipe is not my invention and I am in no way promising that these will be the best Rugelach cookies ever. I don't even really know what Rugelach is, but cross-cultural appreciation, amiright?

I wrote that in a very Tom Haverford voice, guys.

Thank God I'm not a man.

Kidding! I would not be a sketchy Parks & Recreation character.

Anyway, Rugelach is a Jewish cookie that is often baked for celebrations - just don't ask me which ones or I'll be out of my depth again. Maybe Hanukkah? But I only say that because that's my answer to all questions Jewish (and apparently it's not even a big religious celebration, so bah humbug).

Back to the recipe - I'm not a Rugelach connoisseur, so I can't say if they're the best Rugelach ever or even if they're decent Rugelach. I can only judge the recipe on its merits for producing a tasty cookie.

I used Sandy's Best Ever Rugelach Recipe (and perhaps I put the cookies too close to each other on the tray? So much spillage).

I stayed really true to the recipe this time, largely because I was so unfamiliar with the desired result, and the only adjustments that I made were to use chopped walnuts instead of chopped pecans (I didn't have any of the latter) and to not include the optional raisins.

I thought the cookies were flavorful enough without the raisins, so they really weren't missed.

This recipe is a little time-consuming, so it's not a good last-minute choice. You have to make the filling, make the dough, roll out the dough, put the filling on the dough, roll up the dough, make the glaze, brush the cookies with the glaze...and somewhere in there, chill the dough (pre-first roll-out, actually).

The dough can also get really sticky if it's out of the fridge for too long (hence why chilling before rolling out is necessary) so this is a pretty messy recipe.

Following the directions exactly, the cookies puff up nicely but the filling sort of oozes out, making a huge mess on the baking sheet. Make sure to pre-grease or you might as well throw that baking tray in the bin!

The resulting cookies were okay, but not amazing. I've baked better in my sleep.

Okay, maybe not in my sleep, but you get the point. Lots of effort, not an amazing result - if you need to make Rugelach for some reason, I wouldn't suggest not to use this recipe. On the other hand, I also wouldn't recommend it. Your call!

What is Rugelach supposed to be like?

Do you like making pastries or cookies better? These seem more pastry-ish.

What should I try next?

5 Best Things About It Not Being A Leap Year

Leap Years only happen every fourth year, so they get all the love. While 2014 might not be a leap year, however, it can still be pretty awesome!

Here are five great things about 2014 (or, specifically, about 2014 not being a leap year).

1) My birthday comes one day sooner.

Whoot for all March babies!

2) Graduation comes one day sooner.

I don't actually know much about how academic calendars work behind the scenes, so this might not actually be true. Maybe it's a number of days versus a what day kind of thing.

Ah well. We can at least pretend that this one is true, yes? And that the post-graduation world isn't a scary world full of uncertain success and certain poverty?

Kidding, I'm not actually that macabre.

3) The 28 of February falls on a Friday, so March 1 will fall on a Saturday!

I think starting on a Saturday must be a good omen for a month.

4) You don't work an extra day for free, if you're on a fixed annual wage.

Again, I'm not really sure how work days/calendars work, since I am (happily) still a student, but it sounds like a nice benefit if it is true.

5) Christmas comes a day sooner!

Though I have to admit that, even for me, it might be just a tad bit too early to start the Christmas 2014 countdown.

What's the best thing that has happened to you this month?

Do you have any big things coming up before the end of February?

Do you know any leap year babies?

Recipe Review: Starbucks Restaurant Copycat Recipe

My big sister introduced me to this Starbucks Very Berry Coffeecake Copy-Cat Recipe over winter break. At first, I wasn't too enthused about the recipe - I'm not a big fan of desserts that lack chocolate (unless they're frozen/ice cream/ice cream-y).

Because where's the chocolate?

Beyond that, I'm really not a huge Starbucks fan. Don't get me wrong, I like them as much as the next girl - but I don't go out of my way to find a Starbucks unless I'm really caffeine-deprived and then it's the tea and frappuccinos that I'm bee-lining for, not the pastries. When I do go for a sweet treat at Starbucks, it's more often a cookie or brownie than a slice of cake.

Still, I allowed myself to be persuaded to give the recipe a go.

Thank goodness. It's ridiculously yummy! The combination of the tart lemon zest and creamy tart sour cream (I used Hood All-Natural Sour Cream to add that extra moistness that make this cake an mmmmm good treat) take this above and beyond your traditional coffee cake.

It's easy to make, the ingredients aren't too crazy, and my goodness is the addition of the sour cream and lemon zest brilliant!

You don't even need much sour cream - just 3 Tbsp. in the full recipe for a whole 9" square cake (I quartered the recipe to make just a mini loaf pan, since I was baking just for one) - but including that little bit of sour cream makes all the difference.

I followed this recipe to the letter, with the exception of mixing by hand (I didn't have an electric mixer #studentproblems), adding a little squeeze of lemon juice since I couldn't find my grater and didn't feel like zesting by hand with a knife, and using frozen instead of fresh mixed berries for convenience.

I really recommend giving this recipe a whirl! And check out my Ultra Easy Twice Baked Potatoes recipe to use up the rest of your tub of sour cream!

New Quest Bar Flavor - Cookies & Cream!

There's a new Quest Bar flavor! As you know, I love pretty much all other flavors that they have and every new bar that they come up with seems to be better than the one before!

Cookies & Cream is also one of the best flavors ever (it was my favorite ice cream flavor for over a decade and is still really high up on the list). So I was really excited when they announced that the new bar would be Cookies & Cream flavored!

These have actual big chunks of cream filling in them! They reminded me of the white chocolate chunks in the White Chocolate Raspberry Quest Bar.

So. Good.

There were also big chunks of chocolate cookie (think Oreos) as well as small crumbles throughout a bar base that tasted very vanilla-y.

It's amazing microwaved, but also just room temperature. It's hard to think of a tastier way to get protein (a whopping 21 grams - the bars aren't vegan, but vegetarians can rejoice)!

This is one of my favorite Quest Bars at the moment, right up there with their Double Chocolate Chunk bars (also pretty new!) and the Quest Cravings Peanut Butter Cups. Yum!

Let's hope they never stop their prolific output of new products - it seems to be at least two new high quality flavors a year! I really can't think of another company that has them matched on both variety and quality.

Have you tried the new Quest Cookies & Cream bars?

What's your favorite protein bar at the moment?

How often do you eat protein bars?

Who Dresses Boston: Spotlight on Local Fashion!

Everyone knows (or should know) that New York City is a fashion mecca. But Boston gets much less attention! It is, admittedly, the underappreciated little sibling of NYC when it comes to fashion - but it still does have something to offer and, since I'm currently living in Boston (or Cambridge, but that totally counts), I've decided to take a moment to appreciate local fashion movers and shakers!

Sponsored - Ultra-Easy Twice Baked Potatoes Recipe!

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Hood. I received product samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

It's fun to try off the wall recipes and gourmet foods, but sometimes you just want classic comfort foods that are sure to please a crowd.

This recipe, an easy twice baked potatoes dish, is a great side or entree to bring to potlucks, sports watching parties (oh hey, Olympics), or anything else that calls for a classic comfort food!

I used Hood All Natural Sour Cream, a rich and creamy sour cream with no preservatives or unnatural additives to make the fluffy potato filling in the twice baked potatoes.

It adds a little tartness, which goes great with the cheese and green onion flavors, as well as makes the
consistency of the filling really smooth.

All without unnatural food products! Healthy is delicious.

To make this recipe even easier and more potluck-friendly, I used a disposable foil pan. So little clean up! So much happiness.

Ultra-Easy Twice Baked Potatoes
Makes 4 servings

* 2 large baking potatoes
* 1/4 c. whole milk
* 1/2 c. shredded cheese (I used a 'taco' mix that had cheddar and monterey cheeses, as well as spices!)
* 2 Tbsp. butter
* Salt, to taste (~1/4 tsp.)
* Pepper, to taste (~1/4 tsp.)
* 4 green onions, sliced

1) Bake the potatoes at 350F for 1 hour.

2) Cool for 10-15 minutes, then slice in half and scoop the insides out into a large bowl. Save the skins.

3) Add the other ingredients (except half of the cheese and half of the onions) and beat with a hand mixer until smooth and fluffy. Or, if you're a student/otherwise household-challenged, you can do it the ghetto creative way and puree it all in a blender. Because I don't have a hand mixer and my parents are The. Best. Ever. And gave me a Ninja Blender for Christmas (AHHHHHH! I'm so in love) I did it that way.

4) Spoon the filling into the skins.

They will be pretty full to overflowing, but it's not the sort of filling that melts so don't worry about piling it up.

5) Sprinkle the remaining sliced green onions and cheese shreds on the baked potatoes.

6) Return to the oven and bake for another 15 minutes at 350F.

Enjoy!

These are perfect to share. Try my recipe (above) or check out Hood's Facebook page for more fun recipes!

Valentine's Day Recipe Ideas!

There are plenty of wonderful things to do on and for Valentine's Day! Depending on your relationship and preferences, it can be fun to go to the movies, go out to eat, take a long weekend, enjoy some theater, stay in and cook, etc.

The best part is that it's more of a flexible weekend of showing appreciation for the special person in your life than a set in stone one fixed day - especially when it's on a weekend/Friday, like it is this year!

In case you're busy on Friday or have other plans that night, meeting up to prepare and share a romantic breakfast together on Saturday can be a great option.

Plain Pancakes with Honey and Heart Shaped Fruit

It's lovely and not too much more difficult than regular pancakes, other than that it requires more time to cut the fruits properly. But if you're doing it together, it can be fun! Just definitely don't prep the fruits (at least not the bananas) ahead of time - they'll brown and that's just not as appetizing.

It incorporates asparagus, in case you want a little aphrodisiac in your breakfast!

Lemon Cheesecake Pancakes

They're cut pretty - and so delicate and fruity! I definitely recommend the lemon garnish - lemon is also great for cutting the sweetness of the cheesecake pancakes.

This recipe has asparagus (an aphrodisiac) and bacon (man's aphrodisiac?) so it's sure to please. Eggs also make for good staying power, so you'll have energy to do other fun things, like stroll or take a class, all day!

Berry Yogurt Crunch

Though seemingly less impressive than the others, this would be my favorite breakfast. Or, even better, a picnic of fruits, yogurt, cereal, and trail mix.

Though it's a little cold for a picnic...unless it's a couch picnic or you live near the equator?

Still, that just goes to show that the perfect gift depends on the gift recipient. Sometimes thought does count for something!

Which breakfast looks best to you?

Do you have any V Day plans?

Are you celebrating on Friday or over the weekend?

Veggie Vibes: Convenient, Healthy, and Obscenely Delicious!

I had the huge pleasure of trying out Chef Perkunas's organic raw food delivery service, Veggie Vibes, and vlogging about my experience.

Can you tell that I'm a (huge) fan?
The Reader's Digest version is that Veggie Vibes is the best thing ever, Chef Perkunas is amazing, and the food was both absurdly delicious and extremely energizing. I had so much energy and I didn't even go all raw!

Veggie Vibes Super Kong Bars
Everything was amazing, (watch my vlog!) so it's really hard to pick a favorite.

Veggie Vibes Chocolate Brownie
Ultimately, I think I'm going to have to go with the Chocolate Brownie and the Raw Granola as my two top favorites.

The  Shaman's Lunchbox and sprouted burger coming in as the savory close seconds.

Veggie Vibes Shaman Lunchbox
I was so surprised by how satisfying the meals were! I'm not vegan, I'm vegetarian, and I have to admit that (like many) I've always thought that vegan meals would be less satisfying. I have tried a good number of vegan meals and found that was true too often.

Veggie Vibes Shaman Lunchbox
Vegan food seemed to have two options - either light and unsatisfying (leaving me out of energy and/or ravenous just an hour later) or it was super greasy and stomach-ache inducing. Veggie Vibes meals were neither - they were filling and satisfying without feeling too heavy!

Veggie Vibes Raw Coleslaw/Dip
And, unlike many raw food options, Veggie Vibes has 'low-nut' dishes that emphasize sunflower seeds and sprouted grains, instead, in case too many nuts upset your stomach. It's perfect!

Veggie Vibes Raw Coleslaw/Dip
The meals were delicious! Be sure to check out my vlog about the experience and then try it out yourself - you can order as few as eight meals and up to as many meals as you would like for delivery anywhere in the continental USA!

Mention Living, Learning, Eating for a FREE extra entree with you order!
