Breaking Up Isn't Hard to Do—When You're Smart

This might sound really morbid, but there are only two options for a relationship when it comes down to it.

Either you can (a) live happily ever after with the ring and the white dress and the church bells and all that jazz - and let's be real, most relationships probably don't lead to marriage, since most people don't marry their first boyfriend, or (b) you break up. It may not be today, it may not be tomorrow, it may not even be this year. But chances are that it'll happen and, when it does, there will be heartbreak, tears, woe, and lots of Simple Plan/Good Charlotte/The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus/other angsty music.

Yes, I've had a kicka** breakup playlist since before I even had a boyfriend. Don't hate. I'm prepared.

Eating Around the World: African Peanut Stew

It's time for a new recipe - and, since I'm half-Zimbabwean and originally from South Africa, it's high time for a traditional African recipe!

For those of you who are already fans of African cuisine, this recipe is flavorful and well-spiced. For those who haven't tried much African food yet, but love sweet potatoes (and I know a lot of you do) this is a healthy and delicious meal with sweet potatoes.

African Peanut Stew
Serves 3

* 1 Tbsp. Vegetable Oil
* 1 medium onion, chopped
* 1 large clove garlic, minced
* 1 tsp. minced fresh ginger root
* 1 tsp. ground cumin
* 3/4 tsp. cinnamon
* 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
* 3/4 lb. sweet potatoes, chopped
* 1 small carrot, peeled and chopped
* 2 c. water
* 0.5 tsp. salt
* 1/4 c. dry-roasted peanuts
* 1 pinch cayenne pepper
* 2 Tbsp. creamy peanut butter
* 1/2 bunch chopped fresh cilantro

Step Zero - Chop all of the vegetables (I know it lists 'chopped' in the ingredients, but chances are you have to do this yourself. Doing it all before you start will make it easier to stay on top of things as you cook, even if distractions come up or the doorbell rings.

1) Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat.

2) Once the oil is hot, add the onion and saute for 10 minutes, until lightly browned.

3) Add garlic, ginger, cumin, and cinnamon, mix.

4) Add tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and carrot.

5) Cook for five minutes, stirring frequently.

6) Add water and salt, bring to a boil.

7) Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes.

8) Remove the soup from heat. At this point, a lot of the water should be soaked up as this will be a stew, not a soup. You can pre-mash a little, as the potatoes will be very soft, to make it easier on your food processor.

9) Add the peanuts, puree in a food processor until mostly smooth.

10) Return to heat, add peanut butter.

11) Cook, stirring constantly, until heated through. It's important to stir constantly so that it doesn't burn on the bottom at this point!

12) Top with chopped (or shredded) cilantro to serve. DON'T MIX IN.

Serve hot and enjoy!

It's a very satisfying stew, but also pairs well with rice for a filling meal. I really like brown rice, but most types work!

Making Finals Fun

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of BIC 4-Color pen for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.
Okay, fun might be a slight exaggeration. I'm not sure how fun final exams can be.
But you can make them more fun, and make preparing for them more fun, if you have the right tools. I love great stationery and pens and the BIC® 4-Color™ pen, available online at Amazon and Staples, is great! It's a fun, colorful way to express yourself!
Color-coded notes, anyone? I might color-code my notes...
The pen is convenient, because you have 4 Inseparable Colors in 1 Pen, but it's also really fun, because each color has it's own fun personality! Get to know each color's personality in this entertaining video .
Blue is  a little narcissistic, but maybe he's earned it - oceans are blue, royal blue is blue, the sky is blue...
Green is more down to earth. He's an instagram-obsessed foodie, the kind who instagrams every bite he eats at least once before even considering eating it. He's the kind of guy who bakes a birthday cake for his cat! But maybe only so that he can instagram it and so that his cat will love him best. Green is a jealous color, you know.
Red is a go-getter and definitely no stranger to being called type A. 11:11 is his favorite time of day, calculation and conjugation both trump vacation in his book and there's nothing he'd rather do than cuddle up wtih a little raw copyediting material on the weekend and let loose to really make those pages bleed with edits.
Black is angsty and hipster, with a bit of a chip on his shoulder about Blue's popularity. You can probably find him in any off-the-beaten-road bookstore, writing poetry on a napkin and sighing. Read deeply into his work and you might realize that his real desire is to be Undisputed Master of the World.
Want more? Check out the BIC® 4-Color™ pen war video!
Which color is most like you? If I had to choose just one, I would say red (incidentally, a long time favorite color). More realistically, though, I'm more of a mix between red and green with a spot of black when I'm in an angsty mood. Blue is the only one that I don't connect with - he's a bit of a snob!
You can like them all - royal blue, poetic black, nice-guy green, and neurotic red on Facebook and Twitter!
Which color are you?
Do you color code your notes?
Do you have any great study tips?

My Style: Neon

It's been a while since I've done a style post so it's time for another one to celebrate the return of spring (after that freak temperature drop and strange cold precipitation on Thursday - you know you're in Boston when it's not abnormal to drop 35 degrees almost overnight)!

Something Different

I recently got to try a cool new-to-me oil: walnut oil! I have plenty of experience with fragrant olive oils, spicy peanut oils, gets-it-done vegetable/canola oils, and even decadent truffle oils. But walnut oil was new to me!

Emile Noel sent a bottle of their artisan walnut oil to try. It's a great first walnut oil to try, as it's fine pressed and organic with no filler oils, so you get the pure taste and mouth feel of walnut oil and can decide whether or not you like it.

I did! It's a fragrant oil and works best in salads, though it would probably be a great 'secret ingredient' in walnut cookies or tarts to enhance that smooth, nutty flavor.

Though it says no cooking, so I guess save it for the salads? I've only used it on salads, as a dip for bread, and in creamy dips like homemade hummus, so I can't vouch for what cooking with it would do. Honestly, I doubt your oven would explode if you tried to use it in some cookies. I think the more likely reason for that is because it would take away from the great flavor and the health benefits (olive oil is also not great at high temperatures, by the way).

Aside from the distinct (in a good way) flavor, here are some body benefit reasons to eat walnut oil.

Walnut oil:

   - Have a very high antioxidant content (walnuts are among the tree nuts with the greatest antioxidant content)

   - Improve circulation

   - Reduce heart disease risk

   - Improves skin

   - Reduces inflammation

   - May help with skin disorders, like eczema

So basically eat walnut oil, be beautiful. Right? That's the SparkNotes version?

Also, does anyone know the difference between SparkNotes and CliffNotes? Beats me. Read the book! But I digress.

Emile Noel has a range of other artisan oils, including various olive oils, sesame oil, sunflower seed oil, pumpkinseed oil, hazelnut oil, macadamia oil, and sweet almond oil. They seem like a great option if you want to branch out a little, while sticking to healthy fats!

The World Needs More (famous) Airheads!

The World Needs More Airheads!

Wait, what? Does this, like, mean that I, like, should, like, drop out of, like, school and, like, learn that, like, valley girl inflection that, like, makes, like, every, like, sentence sound like a question?

No. In fact, please don't. The world may not need more real airheads, but we do need more celebration of the lighthearted, airheaded moments that we're all subject to.

Drive away with coffee on top of your door? Walked into a glass screened door? Lose your glasses on your face? It happens to all of us!

To celebrate our airheaded moments, Airheads Candy launched "The World Needs More Airheads" on February 24th. It's the first mass marketing campaign ever for the long loved candy company, who are best known for the chewy texture, tangy fruit flavors, and bright colors of its signature candies.

Now Airheads Candy fans with airheaded moments can share those moments for their chance to be famous! Airheads will review your moments of pure airheadedness in the search for the funniest moments (and people!) to feature in future advertising. Submit a video or your airheaded moment on the campaign Tumblr page - all videos submitted that capture the joy of airheadedness will be featured on the site and the top three video will be used in upcoming television commercials!

How to enter:

1.    Create or upload an Instagram Video, Vine, or YouTube video of your airhead moment.
2.    Hashtag with #AirheadsNeeded
3.   Visit Airheads Tumblr and upload your video to enter to win: http://goo.gl/kYKoB1

The top three videos will be selected and used in upcoming TV commercials with others featured in mobile and online advertising beginning in June!

If you need some inspiration, pick up Airheads Candy in Blue Raspberry, Strawberry, Cherry, Green Apple, White Mystery, or Orange flavors at your local convenience, retail, club, or grocery store. Who knows what sort of airheadedness it might lead to!

DISCLOSURE: I received compensation for sharing this Airheads competition in this blog post.

Stomach-Friendly Pizza and Other Great Things

Can you believe that summer is just around the bend? This year is moving so quickly! I'm a fan of the fast pace, but definitely need to squeeze every minute out of these last two months of school.

Convenient Veggie Vibes to the rescue! As before, I put in my order early in the week and received it on Tuesday morning, fresh and packed on ice.

There was a minor snafu with FedEx's delivery, but I contacted Chef Perkunas and he resolved the issue really quickly and positively. The meals were delivered less than an hour later, so they were still super fresh and cold.

I have to say that was probably the easiest, most pleasant problem resolution I've experienced when a difficulty has popped up with any order from anyone!

There were some new delights and some old favorites this week. While the menu changes every week, Chef Perkunas does rotate dishes so that you can enjoy favorite dishes again, albeit in different combinations.

The Rainbow Yumm is an old favorite and, like last time, I really enjoyed it! It was really fresh, like everything else, and the sweet almond cream paired wonderfully with the crispy veggies, sweet diced apples, and juicy grapes.

It also came with a side of crunchy, spicy kale chips. Yum(m)!

The Goddess Mana soup was new to me. It's great that Chef Perkunas always tapes the containers, because it stopped this from being messy.

Great foresight!

I didn't like the soup, but I have to add the disclaimer that I have a strong aversion to grapefruit ever since I had a really bad episode of food poisoning two summers ago shortly after eating some grapefruit. I loved grapefruit before that, and ate it regularly, but haven't been able to eat it or anything grapefruit-flavored since then without becoming nauseous. Since grapefruit juice was a primary ingredient in this soup, the flavor was pretty strong.

This is the only Veggie Vibes item that I have ever not enjoyed, so I'm pretty sure that it isn't the soup's fault, but rather my aversion to grapefruit.

The other new-to-me dishes were all amazing, however!

The Indian Tart was really rich and indulgent - it's definitely the sort of meal that holds you over and sticks to your ribs!

My dad's main problem with vegan food, like that of many people, is that it is either not filling or doesn't keep you satisfied for more than an hour. This would sort out that misconception quickly and deliciously!

Emphasis on deliciously. There's a thick base of nuts, including yummy walnuts, cubed zucchini in the layers (think lasagna-esque) and topped with chopped portobello mushrooms, chopped tomatoes, and vegan cheese. It's so flavorful! There's also a small green salad on the side (very fresh and delicious) and a basil pesto dip/dressing for the salad. So yummy!

It was almost my favorite dish this week.

Almost. But the dessert and the Pizza Gordita were just so delicious that they had to win!

The Pizza Gordita is aptly named, it's definitely a fat pizza.

It's a large rectangular slice of pizza with a rich nut-squash crust, lots of vegan nut cheese, and super fresh and delicious marinated vegetables on top.

I've never had a yummier slice of pizza and, since it's vegan, didn't have the usual digestive discomfort that traditional pizza causes. That's happy dance worthy!

As was the dessert - another new-to-me treat! The dessert, Perfect Pleasure, also lived up to its name. It was very fruity, rich, syrupy (without actual syrup), and scrumptious.

The cherries were a real positive surprise - they were sweet, tart, and a perfect complement to the cocoa-date-nut truffle. Yum!

I still have only had positive experience ordering from Veggie Vibes and highly recommend the service!

Don't forget that if you mention Living, Learning, Eating when you place your order, you'll get an extra entree for free!

If you're in school, when does your semester end?

What do you consider the official beginning of summer?

What's your favorite kind of pizza?

Boutikey: Shopping Boston

I don't have an iPhone. I know - "but, but, but...androids?"

Usually, I'm quite happy that I have one piece of tech that's not from Apple. But sometimes, like when I see a super cute iPhone cover, I consider making the switch.

I heard of Boutikey recently, a shopping and rewards app just for iPhones, and it's definitely another one of those things that makes me consider making the switch!

It's so useful for boutique shopping in the cute boutiques in Boston!

I love how social media is changing the way that businesses interact with customers and making the entire consumer experience so much more interactive. Boutikey does that for boutiques!

Through Boutikey, boutiques can showcase trending items in their stores, post special events and offers, and digitize their rewards programs.

In lay(wo)man's terms, digitizing rewards programs means that it you can store your reward programs on your iPhone, so you don't have to worry about keeping track of all the different rewards cards and how many points you have/when they expire.

Some of the deals are really great - for example, if you spend $250 on full price items at Sail Loft in Chestnut Hill, you get $100 off. That's 40% off your entire purchase, essentially turning the whole store into a huge clearance rack!

At Mint Julep in Brookline, you get 20% off one item with every $200 spent. Or, if you like getting things for free, Bobbles and Lace on Newbury Street offers one pair of free selected earrings for every $100 spent.

The best part? You can keep track of all of these great deals on your iPhone, making it much easier to keep oversight over what's being offered where.

Currently, 53 boutiques in Boston are using Boutikey and it's exclusively available for iPhones. Luckily, an Android-accessible version will be available soon!

Do you prefer shopping in boutiques or big stores?

What are your favorite things to shop for?

How do you keep track of rewards programs?
