A Healthier Alternative to Childhood Cookie Favorites!

Growing up, I loved Fig Newtons - loved. I also was a huge fan of Nutrigrain bars. While either of those is fine as a now and then treat, they aren't really a daily indulgence. Both are full of refined flour of and overly processed ingredients.

I was delighted to discover a snack that was every bit as delicious as the fig and jam-filled bars of my childhood, but whole grain, all-natural, vegan, non-GMO, and kosher.

Not only do Nature's Bakery Fig Bars have all those health benefits over the fig bars I grew up eating, but they also come in a much wider assortment of flavors than their less-healthy counterparts!

There are the traditional fig bars, of course, which are sweet and delicious. I wouldn't change a thing!

But there are all sorts of other great flavors, like blueberry and strawberry. These two really put the Nutrigrain versions to shame!

Some of the more exotic flavors include Mango and Lemon.

I wouldn't have guessed that fig bars would come in those flavors, but they're delicious! Of the two, I especially strongly recommend the mango.

But you really can't go wrong with any of the bars! The filling to cookie ratio is perfect, they're perfectly sweet, they're flavorful and fresh (there wasn't a single dry or stale one among all of them), and they perfectly exemplify my ideal of healthy and delicious!

My single complaint is that the bars come in twin packs but the serving size is listed as only one bar. Pop-tarts are guilty of this, too, and my general opinion is that they should either wrap them individually or make the serving size two bars, instead of one.

Especially in this case, where the bars are small and a single bar wouldn't be an adequate snack, but two are, I think it's a cop-out to 'prettify' nutrition stats.

But overall, the bars are awesome! Yum!

Best Thanksgiving Desserts of 2014

Potluck style Thanksgiving dinners are the best for a number of reasons.

It's fair division of labor, so everyone has some fun cooking, but no one's completely exhausted by dinner time.

It's fair division of costs, since everyone ends up buying some ingredients, but no one is saddled with the cost of creating an entire multi-course Thanksgiving dinner for X number of people.

It's a fair division of effort, so everyone has time to sleep in and take it easy on Thanksgiving morning, and no one is forced to get up at the crack of dawn to get to work in the kitchen.

But, quite honestly, my favorite thing about potluck Thanksgiving dinners is that I can claim volunteer for dessert. I love making desserts, they're so fun!

Here are some great recipes to try this Thanksgiving!

How about we start with a fancier, healthier pumpkin pie for the epicureans?

It's the walnut crumb topping that really makes it (though I'd still serve it with ice cream, instead of whipped cream, because ice cream is always the best with pie - period).

Okay, so I realize this looks like a shameless plug for one of my own recipes, but it's actually really delicious. Just try it and you'll see what I mean.

If you're in the mood for something fruitier, this next recipe might be right up your alley.

Feeling international? Pay tribute to our Canadian neighbors with a Butter Tart?

I'm not really sure why, but butter tart always makes me think of Harry Potter...

But back to the All-American. Are you a Pioneer Woman fan?

Honestly, aren't we all?

Then try this:

You'll never settle for plain apple pie again. Don't forget to serve ice cream on top!

What are you serving for dessert today?

What part of the meal are you responsible for?

Are you heading out for Black Friday shopping tomorrow?

Basically, if this is Black Friday shopping:

- are you the cat or the kid?

SquareBars Review

I love protein bars - they're convenient, often tasty (I have a total weakness for chocolate flavored ones), and provide muscle-fueling vegetarian protein!

For vegans, howver, there are far fewer good protein bar options. Most bars use whey protein, have milk in their chocolate coating, or both.

Luckily for vegans, there's a new all vegan protein bar that's been blowing up in popularity lately.

The icing on the cake (coating on the protein bar?) is that part of the profits from the purchase of Squarebars goes to a good cause!

2.5% of net sales of Squarebars go towards fighting human trafficking! Whoo!

And the bars come in three chocolatey flavors - Squarebars knows that chocolate is what we want, so chocolate is what we get. There's the classic Cocoa Crunch for purists.

Cocoa Almond for chocolate nut lovers.

...that would be me.

Last, but not least, there's Cocoa Coconut for Mounds candy bar fans who want the same taste with better nutrition.

The bars all have similar ingredients and nutritional stats. At a bit over 200 calories and 11g of protein each, they're a great snack to help get plant-based protein in.

And they're delicious. That's huge, because who would eat them if they weren't?

They're more like a chocolate/candy bar than a protein bar in taste and texture, but definitely more like a protein bar in nutrition.

I recommend them!

Have you tried Squarebars? If so, what's your favorite flavor?

What is your favorite plant-based firm of protein?

How often do you eat protein bars?

Recipe: High Protein Noodle Bake

Pumpkin is the golden child of the blogosphere. Up there with overnight oats and nut butter, it's really hard to find anyone who doesn't love pumpkin.

And it's understandable!

Even the hipster bloggers (is that a thing?) probably secretly love pumpkin for it's harvest flavors and the fall memories that spiced pumpkin anything calls to mind.

So how about a healthy high protein noodle bake as we approach Thanksgiving?

Yum! It's delicious, easy, made to serve one (perfect for all the single ladies! Or lunch), and delightfully fall-flavored.

Check. It. Out.

Now I'm craving it. I'll have to make this for lunch again sometime soon!

High Protein Noodle Bake
Serves 1
* 1c. canned pumpkin
* 1 bag (8oz) House Foods Tofu Shirataki Fettucini Noodles, rinsed and drained
* 3 Tbsp. Chia Seeds
* 1 tsp. vanilla extract
* 1-2 tsp. cinnamon
* 1 pinch nutmeg
* 1 pinch cloves
* Dash of salt
* 1/2 tsp. baking powder
* Sweetener to taste (I've had success with either 3 Tbsp. brown sugar or 4 packets Nunaturals Stevia, or a mix of the two)

1) Mix the chia seeds into the canned pumpkin, let sit for ten minutes. By then, the pumpkin will be thickened.

2) Stir in spices, sweetener, baking powder, and vanilla extract.

3) Mix with fettucini, spoon into a greased baking dish.

4) Bake for 30-40 minutes at 400F.

Enjoy!! It's high protein, high nutrient, low carb, and diabetic-friendly if prepared with stevia. All in all, a totally guiltless treat! Though food should never have guilt (that's pretty ridiculous - it's just food, not murder).

What's your favorite fall treat?

What's been your staple lunch lately?

What's your favorite Thanksgiving food?

Chocolate For A Cure

Wouldn't it be awesome if you could stuff your stocking with something that's crazy delicious, good for you, and does good for the world?

Helloooooo, Jojo's Chocolate Hope. It's stevia-sweetened sugar-free dark chocolate that comes in three amazing varieties and 15% of the company's profits go to finding a cure for cancer!

I love that they're actually high cacao dark chocolate, because so much dark chocolate is only 45% or 50% cacao.

These have 75-79% cacao, which is really quite high! The Smooth Criminal (I didn't try it, but it's their plain dark chocolate) even has 81% cacao.

Not only is higher cacao dark chocolate healthier (whoo, antioxidants!) but it's also just so much more chocolate-y!

You can definitely tell which bar is which, because their particular flavors are expressed clearly and well, but the dominant 'red thread' tying them all together is really rich, really intense, really high quality dark chocolate.

Made of just a few simple ingredients!

Each bar is over 2oz of chocolate, so there's a convenient sticker on the back to reseal the bar and save a little for later.

That way you can enjoy the chocolate twice, without worrying about it drying out in the interim!

The Mocha Munch is probably my favorite.

Sultry coffee and indulgent dark chocolate are just a match made in heaven!

The Currant Crush is really quite unique (in a delicious way, not a 'oh, that's...unique' way) so it's a great choice for your epicurean Secret Santa.

I can't be the only one who's already planning for Christmas, right? At least the department stores definitely are!

The Raspberry Spice was also really great - sweet, fruity, but not with such a strong berry flavor as to overwhelm the delightful chocolate flavor.

All of them were a total delight and knowing that 15% of proceeds are going to cancer research is the (awesome) icing on top!

Do you like darker dark chocolate or lighter dark chocolate?

What's your cause of choice?

When do you start planning for the holidays and really getting in the holiday spirit?

Recipe: Vegan Crustless Pumpkin Pie

Mmmm, couldn't you just eat fall-flavored goodies all day every day at this time of year?

But I'm not going to lie, the tummy aches from indulgent classic treats every day just aren't worth it. There's a reason that people only do the Thanksgiving whole-hog-and-midday-naps thing on one day - Thanksgiving.

Here's my solution - a healthy crustless pumpkin pie that you can enjoy any and every day without the discomfort that comes with over-indulgence!

Crustless Pumpkin Pie

* 1 Tbsp. chia seeds
* 3/4 cup soymilk (I used Silk)
* 2 tsp. vanilla extract
* 1 (15oz) can pumpkin puree
* 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted

* 1/2 c. quinoa flour
* 1/2 c. brown sugar
* 2 tsp. baking powder
* 2 tsp. cinnamon
* 1/8 tsp. nutmeg
* Pinch cloves
* 1/2 tsp. salt

1) Combine the chia seeds and soymilk in a large mixing bowl. Mix well and let sit for ten minutes, until thickened.

2) Add vanilla extract, pumpkin puree, and coconut oil to the chia seed mixture, mix well.

3) In a separate bowl, combine the dry ingredients (all the remaining ingredients).

4) Slowly mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Don't overmix!

5) Pour into a well-greased pie pan (or foil disposable pie form for easier cleanup - it is the holidays, after all, and convenience is key).

6) Bake in a preheated 400F oven for 35-40 minutes, until the edges are slightly browned and the top is set (the middle/pie in general will still be gooey)

7) Refrigerate for 6+ hours before cutting.

ENJOY!

This does take a little pre-planning, since you can't eat it straight out of the oven (it will be a gooey mess and the texture just won't be right yet) but it's worth it. It's healthy, delicious, and best served cold!

And if you happen to have some coconut ice cream....mmmmmmmmm

What's your favorite kind of pie?

What's your favorite way to eat pumpkin?

What's your favorite thing about the holidays?

Community Building with BAND

I'm a recent graduate, a blogger, a petite model, an actress, an author, a ghostwriter, and a freelance writer - that's a lot of hats to wear! And with each thing I do comes a big group of related people.

So, here's my dirty secret - I suck at names. Like:

Me: "Hi! I'm Danai!"
Her: "Hi I'm Lucy!"
>two more polite sentence exchanges<
Me: Oh darn, what's her name again? Suzy?

Having a way of keeping track of all the people I know, and keeping track of how I know them, can really help avoid some awkward situations. Especially during the very social holiday season!

More than just helping you organize people in your memory, BAND helps you organize groups - whether it's your Greek organization, childhood Girl Scout troop, work friends, roommates, etc. - for information sharing.

Because everyone needs to see that selfie. #duckface

When I first heard of it, I didn't really get why I would want to use the app when I could just facebook message the people. After trying it out, though I realized that there are several benefits to this (free) app for communication.

First, if you post to an active Facebook group your post is likely to disappear in the feed within minutes. With BAND, you're sure that everyone gets your photo or message or poll or whatever it is, not just those who are on when you're on.

Second, you don't have to go through and add each individual everytime you want to send a message to the group, like you do in email, or worry about messages bouncing back. Full inboxes are the bane of my existence. BAND makes that a problem of the past!

Third, it's a one stop organizer for life. You can share group calendars, polls, messages, files, albums, and general thoughts on a BAND board. I like not having to juggle a million apps, so I think consolidating everything you need for group management in one place is great.

I have made a BAND for my blogger community this far (feel free to join me!) but am definitely going to use it for other groups. The convenience it provides is reason enough to download the free app and join the over 35 million users already using BAND to streamline their social networks!

Do you use BAND?

How many primary social networks do you have?

What's your best way to stay organized socially?

Barney Butter

I looove almond butter.

So does C, my little sister - luckily, because more and more schools are putting peanut bans on lunch.  C has pretty adult tastes at time. For example, she enjoys quiche and green smoothies.

But sometimes all kids just want to eat kid foods! PB&J sandwiches are a childhood classic and while almond butter and banana sandwiches are the shizz, the grainier texture of almond butter just isn't the same for classic sandwiches as the smooth and creamy peanut butter.

Barney Butter is the answer to our peanut butter ban problems. It's the almond butter that thinks it's peanut butter! But really.

It's smooth, creamy, just like your classic childhood peanut butter in texture and consistency.

On top of all that, it's something you can really feel good about making your sandwich with.

A winner of the 2011 Healthy Food Awards, it's chockfull of nutrients and healthy fats!

Barney Butter is also really fun because there are so many different varieties! I tried single serving packs of several of them, but they do come in normal-sized jars for daily sandwich creation.

There's plain smooth, plain crunchy, honey + flax, chia, cocoa + coconut, and vanilla bean. They're all delicious! My favorite is probably cocoa + coconut.

Oh, and did I mention that they're certified gluten free, non-GMO, verified kosher, and all natural? Because they are. And, again, completely peanut free!

If you have a child (or younger sibling), does his/her school have a peanut ban?

Do you have any allergies?

What's your favorite consistency of nut butter? I'm a crunchy girl all the way!
