Healthy Beauty: Five Foods for Beautiful Skin!

We have all heard the saying that beauty comes from the inside. The saying is true, of course, in the intended sense - a beautiful, good soul is so much more attractive than any aesthetically pleasing combination of physical features.

But it's also true in the cheeky sense that a beautiful outside, at least one that stays beautiful over time, requires a healthy inside!

In addition to staying hydrated, sleeping well, and leading a generally healthy lifestyle, here are five of my favorite healthy skin foods to keep my skin healthy and glowing!

1. Avocado

In addition to being a great source of healthy fats, which are really important for supple, glowing skin, avocados are rich in vitamin E. Vitamin E is really important for that glow! If you don't like the funny green fruit plain, it's really versatile in recipes

2. Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are a rich source of selenium, a mineral that helps increase the number of infection-fighting white bloods cells in our bodies. If you're struggling with outbreaks, pumpkin seeds might help!

Pumpkin seeds are also a great source of vitamin E, copper, magnesium, manganese, potassium, calcium, and iron. Those are all really important for great skin health and function!

And, of course, pumpkin seeds are another great source of beautiful skin-promoting healthy fats.

3. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a really healthy source of whole grains that nutritionists love for a lot of reasons. Here is another reason to reach for oatmeal at breakfast - it can help keep your skin young!

Oatmeal digests slowly and thus helps keep our blood sugar levels even and prevent insulin spikes. Since riding a blood sugar roller coaster elevates your body's androgen levels, which are hormones that can contribute to wrinkles, keeping blood sugar levels even is a great thing!

If hot oatmeal isn't your thing, there are plenty of other delicious ways to enjoy oatmeal. Some of my favorites are granola and granola bars!

4. Kidney Beans

When you think of foods for a beautiful complexion, these dark red kidney-shaped fiber powerhouses are probably not one of the first foods that come to mind.

They should! In addition to fiber and protein, these legumes are high in zinc. Zinc help prevents zits! From veggie burgers to salads to chili, there are many delicious way to enjoy this clear complexion hero!

5. Pomegranate

Fruits and vegetables in general are, with their high water content and high nutrient content, great for maintaining healthy, hydrated skin. Pomegranates, however, merit a special mention because they are loaded with polyphenol antioxidants, which fight free radicals and regulate the skin's blood flow.

Everyone loves a healthy, rosy glow! Beyond that, pomegranates are also just absolutely delicious if you can get past the annoyance of separating the arils from the peel.
