Review (and a Recipe Round-Up!): Food to Live Goji Berries

I loved trying Food to Live's Medjool Dates a while back, so I was really excited to try their festively-colored little red goji berries, now that the holiday season is in full swing!

For those who missed my review of the dates, Food to Live creates certified organic dried fruit snacks featuring delightfully short ingredients lists of only one nutritious ingredient each. The goji berries followed that wonderful trend!

The berries are chewy, sweet, flavorful, and each one is the same exacting quality as the last - you won't find a dry berry in the bunch!

I love to eat the little red superfood berries plain, as part of a trail mix, sprinkled in a peanut butter and honey sandwich, mixed in with my yogurt, as a topping on my morning oats, or as a healthy 'sprinkle' on ice cream. Yum!

Review and Giveaway(!) : My Favorite Indulgence

I love breakfast and it's so important! Especially before a crazy day (as today will be for those who partake in the Black Friday shopping frenzy) or after a very indulgent day (as yesterday likely was for many of us), it's important to eat a healthy, balanced breakfast with whole grains for energy and fiber to keep us satisfied all day long.

Luckily, a healthy breakfast can also be a delicious breakfast!

My go-to for breakfast all week has been My Favorite Indulgence, a breakfast choice that's both deliciously indulgent (it lives up to its name) and delightfully healthy.

Read on to learn more about the granolas and to find out how you can enter to win the four granolas pictured above!

Recipe: Irresistible Cheesy Bread

It's that time of year! Happy (almost) Thanksgiving, everyone!

While a lot of us host Thanksgiving celebrations, or celebrate a family Thanksgiving at home, it is also not uncommon to attend a Thanksgiving dinner that someone else is hosting. My family is strewn all around the world and the same is true for many of my fellow New Yorkers!

Attending someone else's Thanksgiving dinner can be a lot of fun. You get to dress up, spend time with some awesome people, and not have the stress of hosting the dinner yourself. That said, it's important to be a good guest. Definitely bring with a host gift and/or a contribution to the dinner!

But what if you know nothing about how to pick a good wine (guilty) and dessert has already been claimed, so you can't bring along an award-winning pecan pie or my classic pumpkin pie? Never fear!

A side dish (or appetizer, depending on how off-schedule the turkey roasting itself is running) is always appreciated.

A dinner bread is especially appreciated, because if it doesn't get eaten at the actual dinner, your hosts can use it for their post-Thanksgiving turkey sandwiches!

This irresistible cheesy bread is a real winner. Everyone always loves it, it's pretty easy to make, the strongly flavored asiago cheese makes it a slightly gourmet (or at the very least, grown up) tasting bread, and asiago cheese is the only ingredient that you may not already have in your kitchen!

Read on for the yummy recipe!

Choose This, Not That: Holiday Edition!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas Thanksgiving!

Okay - it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, too.

funny-Cinderella-fairy-Godmother-Halloween-Christmas

But I'm trying to restrain myself from going too nuts (Christmas carols 24/7, decorations all over the place, daily Christmas baking, searching for the perfect gifts for all my loved ones, and just generally being a holly jolly elf) until Black Friday. It's a tradition for me to try to exercise a teeny-tiny bit of self-control until that hotly-anticipated Friday when I can dial it up to 95% and then December 1, when I can go 100% Christmas nuts.

I don't even participate in Black Friday shopping, but I'm always really excited for the day because it means Christmas is approaching!

so excited for christmas - so excited for christmas Red panda

Anyway, the holiday season is a time of indulgence. Holiday indulgences are wonderful and I firmly believe in taking part, but over-indulgence doesn't feel good and doesn't do anyhting to increase our enjoyment of the season - quite the opposite, in fact!

Go for the indulgence on the big days and when you really want them, but when you're just looking for a bit of a festive feeling, try a healthy swap! Read on for three healthy holiday swaps that I recommend!

Review: Energems

The holidays can be a really busy time for us all, with gift shopping, decorating, hosting friends and family, hosting and attending parties, and just generally trying to pack as much fun as possible into just a few short weeks.

But let's face it - that's not the only reason we all battle exhaustion at some point or the other during November and December. Maybe it's necessary because no one will be working for multiple days, or maybe it's schemed because our bosses figure we have the days off to rest and recover, but somehow it always feels like work picks up both in intensity and length of the day right before the holiday break.

So what do we do when we're overworked, we've played a little too hard, and sleeping more just isn't an option until the days off begin? We eat chocolate.

No, seriously.

Energems are the snack that picks you right up out of your mid-afternoon slump and powers you through to day's close. Best of all, each serving of Energems not only delivers an energy burst whose impressive effectiveness I can personally attest to, but each serving also comes in the form of what's basically three oversized (and absolutely delicious) M&Ms!

Recipe: Can't-Fail Creamed Corn

Creamed corn is an American staple side dish. I've babysat kids before who wouldn't touch any vegetable (including regular cooked corn or corn on the cob) but went crazy for my creamed corn.

While it's important to encourage picky eaters to get a variety of vegetables in their diet (I have posted about ways to do so, sneakily and not-so-sneakily!) it's great to also have a veggie side option that you don't have to convince or trick them into enjoying. This creamed corn fits the bill!

While corn is often under-appreciated as a vegetable, there are actually a lot of great reasons to enjoy corn!

Corn is rich in vitamins A, B, and E, as well as a wide variety of minerals, including magnesium, zinc, phosphorous, manganese, and so on. It is in high in satiating, digestion-regulating fiber, contains antioxidants that have been linked to reduced rates of cancer and Alzheimer's, reduces cholesterol absorption in the body, promotes good bone health, and helps prevent anemia.

Satisfied that you want corn on your dinner table? Great! Then read on for the recipe for my creamed corn - you'll have plates scraped clean!

Review: Angelic Bakehouse

Fad diets, like Atkins, have carbs a bad reputation. Luckily it's becoming more and more common knowledge that carbohydrates are a really important macronutrient - they're our primary energy source! Healthy eating is not about minimizing carbs, it's about choosing healthy carbs.

Whole grains are a much better choice than refined grains for a number of reasons. Personally, I think they taste a ton better with their hearty nuttiness than bland and relatively tasteless paste-white refined grains. Beyond that, they are also full of satiating, digestion-regulating fiber, have the intact grain and thus still contain the healthy fats and proteins that naturally occur in the grain, and increased whole grain intake has been linked to a number of positive health outcomes.

Going one step further than whole grains for healthy carb selection, sprouted whole grains offer even more benefits! The sprouting process makes the grains more easily digestible and increases the availability of the naturally occurring vitamins in the grain to boost nutrition without adding anything artificial!

Angelic Bakehouse makes non-GMO, kosher, sprouted whole grain bread products - everything from breads to wraps to rolls to buns to wraps and even flattzas, a pre-made pizza crust! Everything is dairy-free, egg-free, nut-free and vegetarian, so they're suitable for a lot of different ways of eating!

I recently had the pleasure of trying a few of their breads, wraps, and flattzas.

We'll start at the wraps and work our way up to my favorite Angelic Bakehouse products.

I was pleased, and a bit surprised, by how pliable the wraps were. Often whole grain wraps, especially sprouted whole grain wraps, can he really stiff and tough to use to wrap up fillings or as a burrito. They get a thumbs up!

Next up are the flattzas.

Talk about making a healthy dinner night quick and easy! The flattzas come in both a single serving personal pizza size and  a larger whole pizza size. I like that the options make it easy to make a quick pizza just for yourself or for your family/friends, as well, if you're sharing dinner.

They're really firm and thicker than the wraps, though also flat, so they hold up quite well to any toppings. Just spread on some tomato sauce, sprinkle with your toppings and cheese of choice, and pop into the oven for a quick, healthy, balanced dinner that kids and adults alike will enjoy!

The flattzas also get a thumbs up from me.

It should come as little surprise to longer-term blog readers (thank you!), however, that my favorites were the breads!

Both varieties that I tried, Sprouted Wheat and Sprouted 7 Grain, were hearty, soft but substantial, and great both plain and toasted.

The ingredients lists are mercifully short and the breads give you nothing more and nothing less than the good stuff you're looking for.

Any of their breads makes an excellent breakfast, lunch, or anytime snack choice. They get two thumbs up from me!

Do you prefer sandwiches or wraps?

Do you eat bread products most often as a breakfast, lunch, or snack food?

What are your favorite toppings to eat on bread?

Recipe: Crowd-Pleaser '50s Meatloaf

Meatloaf is a classic American dish and one of the first meals people think of (especially when served with mashed potatoes and green beans) when you ask for a go-to comfort food dish or something All-American to serve to foreign dinner guests.

I made this meatloaf for a mixed group of diners, some German and some American, and not only did both groups really enjoy it, but I also got some recipe requests!

It's an easy recipe that will impress your guests and trust me when I say it's easy - I'm definitely not very experienced cooking meat, but I pulled this one off without difficulty! Read on for the no-fail recipe.

Review: Bella Viva Orchards Gift Boxes

The holidays are just around the bend and with the holidays comes the gifting season. While many of us think of the December holidays (in particular Christmas) as the main gifting days, and I'm among those who feel that way, Thanksgiving is also a gifting holiday if you're attending someone else's holiday dinner!

Throwing a Thanksgiving dinner takes a lot of time and effort. Showing your appreciation for your host's efforts by bringing along a thoughtful gift is not only a nice thing to do, but also encourages your host to continue hosting future Thanksgivings.

My favorite thoughtful host/hostess gifts for Thanksgiving are gifts that are relevant to the dinner. Bringing a healthy, delicious, and prettily packaged option for pre-dinner munchies is thoughtful and helps your hosts out. I really like the Bella Viva Orchards Organic Gift Crate as that perfect present!

Recipe: Bruce Bogtrotter's Extreme Chocolate Cake from 'Matilda' the movie!

Do you remember that epic scene from Matilda, where the awful headmistress Agatha Trunchbull forces Bruce Bogtrotter to eat an entire chocolate cake on stage in front of his peers?

While that scene looked miserable, both for the public humiliation factor and the fact that eating such a big, rich cake all by oneself so quickly must cause some digestive upset, the cake itself always seemed like the pinnacle of an extremely chocolatey chocolate cake.

Chocoholics would love it!

Albeit, probably a slice as opposed to a whole cake and probably enjoyed with a dessert fork instead of by the fistful.

This cake is exactly as chocolatey and indulgent as Bruce Bogtrotter's chocolate cake and perfect for the chocoholic in your life! Read on for the recipe!

Review: Blissful Eats Granola

Blissful Eats granola is gluten-free, vegan, paleo, kosher, non-GMO and all delicious. There's no preamble needed (nor wanted) for this review, because the granola is simply that delicious!

It makes a perfect breakfast, an excellent snack, and both a delicious topping and an amazing straight-out-of-the-bag food to munch.

Blissful Eats granola proves that healthy can be delicious! The two varieties of granola that I tried are organic, gluten-free, grain-free, paleo, vegan, and free of refined sugars.

That leaves more space for great nutrition! The granola is packed with healthy fats (including the ever-trendy coconut oil) and is low in sugar, but a decent source of fiber.

Read on for more of what makes the granola an excellent breakfast, snack, or anytime choice!

Recipe: Garden Pesto Salmon Sandwich

Love fish and love fish night, but don't love the high cost of a restaurant date out at an overpriced seafood place? There's no need anymore, because now you can get the same great quality at home with BumbleBee SuperFresh®, for a lovely date in or a lovely picnic date out, enjoying the beauty of fall! BumbleBee SuperFresh® is a complete line of naturally-seasoned, restaurant quality, “fish-forward” prepared seafood solutions for the home. It raises the bar for what seafood lovers can expect from frozen food!

In NYC, there are plenty of great 'event' dates - museums, shows, theater, and so much more! But I find that some of my favorite dates (and my favorite days) are when we keep it simple.

Don't get me wrong, going out in the city is a blast! I saw the Lion King on Broadway a few winters ago and still remember it as an amazing experience. But that's the sort of special occasion thing that's a wonderful treat for now and then, but a bit excessive on a weekly basis (unless you happen to get free Broadway tickets and are dating a dramaturg).

For the more regular date, I prefer going on strolls, having a nice homemade picnic, watching a movie, and just generally enjoying free time and the beautiful fall weather with great company! One of my favorites is having a casual lunch and then going to the roof of the Met (Met admission is free/pay as much as you want) to look out over beautiful Central Park and chat!

Let's not lie, we all love a good PB&J on a picnic or for lunch. I'm a young adult, however, and date young adult guys who have a bit more of an appetite and maybe a bit higher of a protein need at lunch (especially if I'm going to drag him all across Central Park to puppy-watch and visit the reservoir) than a single PB&J will satisfy.

Instead of going through a loaf of bread's worth of PB&Js for a lunch date and leaving my date feeling like our casual lunch is a real downgrade from a restaurant, I like making a hot sandwich for lunch that's still quick, easy, and affordable, but has a more grown-up and gourmet feel (and is more satisfying) than a PB&J!

Try my Garden Pesto Salmon Sandwich, featuring restaurant-quality BumbleBee SuperFresh® Salmon with Garden Pesto, for your next lunch date in. BumbleBee SuperFresh® Salmon with Garden Pesto is wonderfully flavorful and has no preservatives and has all natural ingredients, so you can enjoy great taste with great nutrition!

If you have more lunch dates like this and a few less in restaurants, you'll not only find that you and your date are both enjoying healthier lunches (and the many health benefits of salmon!) but that the money you'll save on eating out will add up to a Lion King on Broadway (or Radio City Christmas Spectacular - it's on my bucket list for one of these years) date without sacrificing any enjoyment!

Read on for the quick and easy recipe. There are only ~5 minutes of prep and it takes only ~25 minutes total to make, from start to finish, including the salmon baking time!

5 Fun Fall Dates in NYC

Winter has always been a favorite season of mine, largely because I'm absolutely and completely obsessed with Christmas. Fall is a favorite of many, however, and it has grown on me as I've gotten older, too!

Have you heard of 'cuffing season'? It's a ridiculous term that I recently learned of to explain the spike in new relationships in the fall and winter seasons. Apparently, people avoid the higher electricity costs associated with cold weather and heating by finding significant others to...keep them warm.

That cat GIF may be slightly gratuitous, but when do we not love adorable animals being adorable? I always do.

Anyway, I think it's much more likely that any such 'cuffing season' seasonal correlation, if there is one, would be due more to people being more settled in the fall and winter (since many people travel in summer) and thus more willing to see where something new could go.

Whatever the reason, lots of people are looking for fun date ideas in the fall. And there are so many! Read on for five fun fall date ideas in NYC!

Recipe: Quick and Easy White Bread

I love grainy, seedy, dark breads. Pumpernickel is one of my favorites, especially in Germany!

Sometimes, however, you need a simple bread. If you're feeding a picky eater, a group of kids, or someone with a cold or flu and a sensitive stomach through that, sometimes a simple white bread is just what you need.

This recipe is a quick, easy, no-fail, and short rise time recipe for exactly that! I like to make it when someone has one of those sudden flu onsets. You can start it when they head off for a nap and be done by the time they're ready for some chicken soup (or the vegetarian equivalent) and plain buttered bread.

Enjoy!
