Style Post: Behind the Scenes

Happy Memorial Day! I have some work to do today, but also lots of fun to have. Hopefully you are all busy with fun Memorial Day activities, so this is a quick post - some behind the scenes shots from a shoot last week!

Superfood of the Day: Tigernuts

Have you heard of tigernuts?

The latest superfood craze, especially among fans of the paleo diet, is not a nut - it's actually a small root vegetable!

Tigernuts make a great snack, either straight out of the bag or after an overnight soak in water to soften them. My favorite way to eat them is out of the bag, because I like the crunch!

There are many reasons to eat tigernuts. They may look like wooden beads, but they're also rich in a variety of important minerals and in the prebiotic fiber that nourishes the good bacteria in our large intestines!

I recently tried an assortment of tigernut products from Organic Gemini.

Organic Gemini has a nice variety of tigernut products, beyond the two types of raw tigernut granola and raw tigernut snacks that I tried. Their snacks and granola fit into pretty much any healthy diet - they're non-GMO, gluten-free, kosher, vegan, paleo, nut free, organic, and made by real people in Brooklyn. It's always nice to know where your food comes from!

The Old and The New

Life is full of old things that appear in our lives in new ways. Sometimes we re-purpose old belongings, sometimes we re-visit old places, sometimes we try new versions of old things.

I love the old-new combination and here are some of the old-new things in my life right now!

Old jacket, new shoes -

Remember this jacket from last year? Pairing it with new pieces makes it more fun and great for late spring/early summer in Boston!

The gold sneakers give it some warm weather pizzazz.

Style Post: Seeing Stars

Do you remember that cute eShakti coat I posted about last year? eShakti doesn't just make custom fit and super chic outerwear. They also make really cute customized dresses!

I liked the original version of this dress when I saw it on their website, but it was still pretty chilly in NYC, so I swapped to long from short sleeves.

I also swapped the scoop neck for a high neck, because I think they look so nice on mini dresses.

I love that you can start with a design that you like and adjust it to get exactly the dress that you want!

The dresses can also be customized for skirt length, so you can go mini, midi, or maxi, depending on your preferences.

Tips for Better Train Travel (AKA There's Spinach in My Chocolate)

I'm moving to Boston for the summer on Sunday (summer is coming so quickly!) and I'm going to take the Amtrak up again, like last year.

I go/have gone back and forth between NYC and Boston quite often over the years and Amtrak is almost always my choice. It's faster, more reliable, and more comfortable than a bus. It's slower than flying, but if you account for the time spent getting to the airports, which are, unlike train stations, outside of the city, as well as TSA time. It also has less strict limits on the amount of luggage allowed, which is great when the trip will last multi-months and you have to pack a lot.

I would honestly have expected it to be much cheaper than a flight, but it's usually only slightly cheaper. It's still always the overall cheaper option, however, because you can take the subway to the train stations easily whereas airports generally require a cab or Uber ride.

Still, there's no perfect form of transportation. Here are my tips for a better train trip!

Style Post: Dreaming of Flowers

Spring is so beautiful and one of my absolute favorite things about spring is that the world comes into bloom in spring!

There's something so magical about flowers. They're beautiful, they're alive, and (as the seed-bearing part of the plant) they're life giving.

Being adorned with a lovely fresh flower crown for a shoot for Maisie Coulbert Photography was so fun!

Time Savers: Tips and Tricks from Mom

Happy hump day! As we pass over the hump of the week and the weekend comes into view, so does something very special - Mother's Day!

My mother just moved back to Germany last summer, so this is the first Mother's Day where she'll be overseas. She is an absolutely amazing mother who always was and still is there for my sisters and me when we need her. She's even there when we don't need her, but just want her.

In South Africa :) Left to right: my big sister, me, my mom (our dog below)
She also taught us all sorts of important time saving tricks:

* Pre-soak shirts in the sink if there's a stain, so you don't spend ages scrubbing.

* Organize assignments in writing, ideally in an agenda but a stray napkin will do in a pinch, to prevent midterm freak-outs.

* Have an assigned cleaning day so that you actually get it done regularly and don't have to waste hours on a deep clean when the squalor becomes unbearable.

* Always use a cast iron skillet pan when you're making pancakes.

Recipe here!
* Cook favorite meals in bulk and freeze leftovers to save on cooking time.

* Be a good person, so you don't have to waste time feeling crappy.

She definitely deserves to feel special this Mother's Day. Now that we don't live in the same country anymore, or even the same continent, gifting is a little bit trickier. But not impossible!

Whether it's to send money for a shopping trip for a spa day or a special meal out, there has to be a convenient and secure way to send money overseas. There is! Especially during holidays, like Mother's Day, it's so great that PayPal and Paypal's Xoom are a fast and secure way to send money anywhere, even overseas - like to my mom in Germany!

Xoom is a PayPal service that powers international payments to family and friends in more than 40 countries around the world - and the number one recipient group of Xoom payments is mothers!

How To Find A Summer Sublease

I cannot remember the last time that I have lived in the same city for a solid year. I live primarily in NYC these days, and have for almost two years now, but there's always a month here, two months there...

image

...you get the idea. As such, I now consider myself somewhat of an old hat at finding subleases, especially in busy cities like Boston and NYC.

The first time I looked for a sublease, no less in NYC, it felt like falling into an internet pit of inflated rents, stock photos, and poorly written descriptions.

image

Don't worry, it's not really so scary! I just found my summer sublease in Boston 1.5 weeks ago and I'll be moving back up for the season in just 2 weeks. Yay!

Read on for the best places to look for subleases, whether you're budget-minded or more concerned with amenities.
