Review: Rawvolution Box (and a discount!)

It's pilot season, tax season, and the season of trying to get our lives (and bodies) in shape. The perfect time for a little boost from a convenient meal delivery service, no?

While meal delivery services tend to be pricier than making your own food, and often even more expensive than eating out, they can be really helpful when you're busy. You don't have to think about getting or making food, it's just waiting for you in your fridge when you're hungry! That sounded totally ideal to me, so I decided to give Rawvolution, the raw vegan meal delivery service endorsed by Alicia Silverstone, Cher, Carol Alt, and other glamorous LA types, a try. LA loves it and now there's nationwide shipping, so NYC must love it, too, right?

...well... this will be a really mixed bag review, because the food was AMAAAAAAAAZING but the logistics of long-distance shipping left a bit to be desired.

My experience started on a less than great note. Admittedly, the chaotic deliver wasn't the company's fault, but due to weather/UPS. The food was supposed to arrive by 1:30pm on Tuesday. Instead, it arrived at 8pm on Wednesday. Grrrrr. Considering that next day shipping to NYC costs between $60 and $100 per box, depending on the speed you select, that sort of delay can be quite frustrating.

Worse, the food arrived only cool (not cold) to the touch - after spending $120 on the meals (that's the cost without shipping) I was worried that some of the food might go bad before I could eat it all.

Not as bad, but also not appealing, is the presentation. While LA customers receive their meals in deli containers, shipping customers receive their meals vacuum sealed in plastic bags - a not at all appetizing presentation, especially for the wet dishes (which is over half of them). Shipping costs are already super high, though, and I suppose the meals are vacuum sealed to keep them from being positively astronomical.

Rawvolution 'The Box' Review

On to the next thing - the contents of The Box. Boxes are non-customizable, so you get whatever the fixed menu is each week, in fixed amounts.

I received:

1. Green Cleanse Fresh-Pressed Juice
2. Roots Infusion Fresh-Pressed Juice
3. No Bean Hummus
4. French Carrot Salad
5. Cauliflower Couscous
6. Creamy Sunflower Seed Salad
7. Nut & Veggie Pate Wrap
8. Enchilada Blanca
9. Greek Pizza
10. Sloppy Joe Sandwich
11. Pecan Crumble
12. Cinnamon Raisin Balls

I'm not much of a juice drinker and would rather have traded the two juices ($20 worth of product, if you divide the total cost by the twelve items in the box) for more of something else. I also would have probably swapped a few other menu items. If I could tweak the service, I'd make opting in and out of menu items the first change.

Anyway, onto the actual food. While there may still be some significant kinks to work out with the long distance shipping service, the food itself is INCREDIBLE and Chef Matt definitely has real talent for turning healthy vegetables into delicious meals! Seriously, the food was among the best I've ever eaten and, if I had infinite money and the shipping issues were worked out, I'd order from Rawvolution every single week.
I was pleasantly surprised by the green juice. Usually, one of my biggest complaints about commercial green juices is that they're all so sweet. This one wasn't! It wasn't bitter, either, but it definitely didn't just taste like apple juice with some greens added in for color, like so many do. It was pleasant, mild, tasted fresh, and felt good to drink. While I still probably wouldn't choose to buy a juice if I had the option to get food instead, since I'm perfectly happy with water and tea, it definitely surpassed my expectations.

Rawvolution Roots Infusion Fresh Pressed Juice

The Roots Infusion juice was also really good. It was quite sweet, but the sweetness was balanced by spice. It was filling, a drink with substance, and also a really pretty color!

I seriously wish Essie would make a nail polish in that color - it's exactly the shade I've been looking for at salons near me for weeks. It would look perfect with my new swing dress from ASOS! Sigh... oh yes, and I'm sure it's a very nutritious drink.

Rawvolution Cauliflower Couscous

Another surprise was the Cauliflower Couscous, which I had next. I was super positively surprised by the portion size - it was very generous and very satisfying! With this one, I was expecting it to be more of a side potion and thought I'd probably still be hungry after. But it was a big bowlful and certainly satisfying for lunch!

More importantly, it was really delicious! Very flavorful, but never overpowering. I was pleasantly surprised by the olives and herbs in the couscous and I enjoyed every last bite of this meal. So good, so satisfying, so energizing!

The hummus was creamy, flavorful, and there was a lot of it. I'm not sure what it's made of since there are no beans in it, and I would have liked an ingredients list on the label (or somewhere) but that minor complaint aside, I enjoyed it a lot!

Another dish where I had no idea what I was actually eating (beyond that there were sunflower seeds and that it was totally delicious):

Rawvolution Creamy Sunflower Sea Salad

It was a little strange not knowing what I was eating, but the dish was so tasty that it didn't really give me pause. Besides, I knew sunflower seeds, celery, and scallions were involved, and that there couldn't be any super strange animal or bug involved, since it's all vegan.

Anyway, I had no idea what to expect from the creamy sunflower sea salad when I read the name - 'sea salad' made me expect something like a seaweed salad, but then 'creamy sunflower' threw me off. In case you're equally confused, it's actually like a mock tuna salad and not seaweed-y at all. I'm not sure where the 'sea' bit comes in at all, to be honest, but it was delicious. Again, it's a very generous portion and, since it's creamy and full of healthy fats, it's quite filling. Yum!

One of my favorite savory dishes was the enchilada blanca:

Rawvolution Enchilada Blanca

It's so creamy and delicious, with a perfectly nutty, crunchy filling and some greens for color and bite. I savored every bite!

The nut & veggie pate wrap was fine - it didn't look pretty coming out of the bag it shipped in and it was a bit messy to eat, plus the flavors weren't really my thing, but I'm sure someone would enjoy it. I was expecting to like it a lot, and the creamy sunflower sea salad much less, so that just goes to show that you need to try things before you can form an opinion of them!

The pizza was also a bit tough to get out of the bag in one piece. You also definitely need to assemble it on a clean counter space and thoroughly wash your hands after, because it's saucy after a few days in the bag.

Rawvolution Greek Pizza

I like that they thought to separate the toppings (resting on a leaf of lettuce, to hold them together) and the base (in a separate ziploc bag) so that the base wouldn't be soggy. It was definitely worth the extra packaging, because the different textures were great!

More than any of those savory dishes, I loved the desserts. Who's surprised there? I have a raging sweet tooth. The pecan crumble was totally delicious - pecan pie is my favorite dessert and it was basically like pecan pie without the crust - super sweet and creamy, with whole nuts and chopped nuts mixed in. I wish I could buy it at Whole Foods!

The cinnamon raisin balls were more or less what I expected - sweet and fruity and nutty, but actually sweeter than I expected. They were definitely dessert-/candy-like and not fruit-and-nut bars. I like fruit-and-nut bars, too, but I liked that these were proper decadent desserts!
