Review, Giveaway, and a Discount: Ambrosial Harvest Muesli + Granolas

Cereal is one of America's favorite breakfast foods. It's one of my favorites, too!

Starting the day with a bowl full of sugar and refined grains, however, is a questionable health decision. Sugary breakfast cereals aren't good for energy levels or blood sugar levels, they don't contribute much other than empty calories to your nutritional needs, and they're just not 'breakfast of champions' material. On the other hand, a bowl full of twiggy bran that both looks and tastes like shredded cardboard isn't satisfying anyone's cereal craving.

Luckily, there are healthy cereals that both taste great and are great for you!

Ambrosial Granola

I love Ambrosial Harvest cereals! Ambrosial Harvest makes whole grain granolas and muesli that are all USDA organic, gmo-free, gluten-free, vegan, certified kosher, free of refined sugars, and full of heart-healthy omega 3 fatty acids.

As a bonus, they're also local! Ambrosial Harvest granolas are made right here in New York!

Ambrosial Muesli Review

I love the creative flavors - their muesli has goji berries, big flakes of shredded coconut, generous pumpkin and sunflower seeds sprinkled throughout, and filling whole grain oats.

I'm half-German, so I grew up on muesli for breakfast and it has long been a favorite. This one didn't disappoint! While I would have liked a bit more of the dried fruits (I loooove dried fruits) the balance was sweet enough and the combination of flavors was delicious! I love it soaked in milk for 15-20 minutes, so the oats start to soften, but don't turn to glop.

Degustabox is my favorite monthly subscription service! Every month, like a surprise care package from an in-the-know-foodie friend, a big box full of full-sized new treats (10-15 kinds!) shows up on my doorstep!

I'd never even heard of many of the products before and, in two months of deliveries, I've already discovered some new favorites.

New Foodie Finds:

Can we start with my favorite one? Good, because I am.

Toosum Bars

Let's have a moment of silence to honor this amazing bar, which came to its delicious demise right as the mid-afternoon energy slump hit at work. I'm learning a lot at my new job and I need to be fully alert and fueled to do so!

I was ravenous on Thursday and paired this with a granny smith apple for a satisfying, well-rounded snack that powered me through the rest of the work day and until I got home for dinner at 7! So yummy.

It's oaty, whole-grain, the perfect amount of sweet, and so good. I normally hugely favor snack bars with chocolate in them (or that are entirely chocolate-based) but I didn't miss the chocolate in this at all. I'd love to eat this as a work snack every afternoon!

Next up is a childhood favorite:

Superfood of the Day: Tigernuts

Have you heard of tigernuts?

The latest superfood craze, especially among fans of the paleo diet, is not a nut - it's actually a small root vegetable!

Tigernuts make a great snack, either straight out of the bag or after an overnight soak in water to soften them. My favorite way to eat them is out of the bag, because I like the crunch!

There are many reasons to eat tigernuts. They may look like wooden beads, but they're also rich in a variety of important minerals and in the prebiotic fiber that nourishes the good bacteria in our large intestines!

I recently tried an assortment of tigernut products from Organic Gemini.

Organic Gemini has a nice variety of tigernut products, beyond the two types of raw tigernut granola and raw tigernut snacks that I tried. Their snacks and granola fit into pretty much any healthy diet - they're non-GMO, gluten-free, kosher, vegan, paleo, nut free, organic, and made by real people in Brooklyn. It's always nice to know where your food comes from!

3 Healthy Habits To Start Right Now

The holidays aren't always the healthiest time of the year for many of us and that's totally fine. There's no need to be a Grinch and forgo all the special holiday treats that only come once a year.

That said, there is no reason to make things harder on ourselves for when January resolution fever rolls around by completely ignoring the importance of healthy living during the holidays. Completely ignoring our physical well-being for an entire holiday season leads to feeling pretty awful when all the sleepless nights of holiday parties and running on sugar and fumes are over.

It's all about the balance!

Here are three simple, healthy habits that you don't need to wait for the new year to adopt. Get in the habit now and you'll start the new year feeling much better than otherwise - maybe even good enough that you can focus on career or personal resolutions instead of health ones!

Review and Giveaway(!) : My Favorite Indulgence

I love breakfast and it's so important! Especially before a crazy day (as today will be for those who partake in the Black Friday shopping frenzy) or after a very indulgent day (as yesterday likely was for many of us), it's important to eat a healthy, balanced breakfast with whole grains for energy and fiber to keep us satisfied all day long.

Luckily, a healthy breakfast can also be a delicious breakfast!

My go-to for breakfast all week has been My Favorite Indulgence, a breakfast choice that's both deliciously indulgent (it lives up to its name) and delightfully healthy.

Read on to learn more about the granolas and to find out how you can enter to win the four granolas pictured above!

Latest Finds: A Purely Elizabeth Granola Review!

Granola is my favorite sweet cereal, hands down.

Despite its healthy reputation, however, some commercial granolas can be unhealthier than even the worst of your childhood sugar cereal favorites!

Granola is very dense and can pack a lot of sugar and fat into a very small portion (who eats a measly quarter cup?) and I've seen boxes of granola where the ingredients list was longer than a Faulkner sentence and featured more chemicals than an orgo exam. No thanks!

Luckily, not all granolas are candy in a bag. There are healthy and delicious choices out there, you just have to choose carefully!

One such choice is Purely Elizabeth granola. Available in three flavors (Original, Pumpkin Fig, and Cranberry Pecan), Purely Elizabeth granolas are all free of gluten, refined sugar, and GMOs.

Prospect Hill Orchard: A Healthy Granola Option

I absolutely love granola! It's hands-down my favorite kind of cereal and goes great with everything.

But a lot of granolas are nutritionally worse than the infamous 'sugar cereals' of 50s breakfasts. Between achieving the trademark rich crunch with hydrogenated oils and achieving the sweetness with high fructose corn syrup and more refined sugar than cookies, the shortcuts used to make some granolas turn them into veritable nutrition disasters.

Definitely not how you want to start your day on a regular basis.

Just Pure Foods Kale-Nola Review + GIVEAWAY!

I love granola and have recently discovered that kalenolas are a fun way to mix things up.

Just Pure Foods sent me both of their Kale-Nola to try! They have a Maple Cranberry Kale-Nola and a Chocolate Kale-Nola.

I was happy to see that, while there was a good handful or so of crumbly stuff in the bottom of the bag, the kale-nola actually came in mostly big pieces - really big ones!

I love when there are big chunks of kale-nola or granola, because then it's great for eating out of the bag when you want a handy snack.

And they're a very healthy snack, too! Plenty of healthy fats from the seeds, whole grains from the sprouted buckwheat, and natural sugars from agave and coconut palm sugar.

Since they're low-temperature dried, I think they probably work for most raw foodists, too.

The Maple Cranberry Kale-Nola was delicious.

There were plenty of dried cranberries and the granola was sweet enough without having an overwhelming maple flavor.

But my favorite was the Chocolate Kale-Nola - of course!

It was like Kalenola with chocolate melted over and solidified - so good. A super chocolatey trail mix-reminiscent treat!

You can eat the Kale-Nola by itself, with yogurt, on ice cream (especially the Chocolate Kale-Nola, it really is dessert-worthy), or with any type of milk.

Do you want to try the Kale-Nolas yourself (or any of Just Pure Foods other healthy snacks, like Onion Rings, Kale Chips, and Zucchini Chips)? Just Pure Foods will send one lucky Living, Learning, Eating reader 5 free products of their choice!

The giveaway stays open for two weeks, US readers enter below!

Louise's Chia Granola Review & GIVEAWAY!!

I'm on a unique granola kick!

Today's unique granola is another grain-free granola - but instead of being based on kale, it's based on chia seeds, nuts, and seeds.

I like a lot of what they have to say (and what they are/stand for) but I'm not really loving the hating on Kellogg's and General Mills. Those brands definitely do have some cereals that wouldn't top any nutritionists must-eat list, but they also have some solid options - I'm a big fan of Fiber One cereals (and a lukewarm fan of cheerios) and I think it's great that those big brands have tried to shift cereals like Cinnamon Toast Crunch (a childhood favorite) and Fruit Loops in a healthier direction with whole grains.

And I just don't like slander campaigns, whether it's for politicians or products.

Anyway, back to the cereal.

Louise's Granola has no oats, no grains, no added sugars, and nothing unnatural. It's great for those with celiac's disease or those who try to limit grain consumption (I personally think grains are part of a healthy diet) or keep carbs under control (like diabetics).

It's also great for anyone trying to add in some heart-healthy fats or just looking for an alternative cereal to mix things up!

Best of all, it genuinely tastes really good. Many of us would probably consider it more of a trail mix than a granola, with all the dried fruits, nuts, and seeds that are in it, but I really liked that about it!

It made an excellent yogurt topping as an afternoon snack, and I'm sure a bowlful would taste great with some almond milk for breakfast (though I haven't tried it that way yet).

As stated earlier, it's super healthy. A healthy breakfast is important to start the day properly and this one certainly fits the bill! I love that you don't have to worry about a sugar crash with it and all the healthy fats give it staying power.

A third cup isn't a meal-sized serving for me, it needs to be at least a cup, but a cup is 450 calories and that's appropriate for breakfast - you don't want to eat like a bird and be starving in two seconds! I have LSATs next week, so I'll definitely have this before the exam. Brain food for the win!

Want to try it yourself? They're letting me give their granola to TWO lucky LLE readers! If you're over 18 and in the US, enter through Rafflecopter below!

Winners will be announced here on June 20.

I imagine that many of you, like me, are on a budget. And who doesn't love a good laugh? It's one of the cheapest things you can do for your health! So, without further ado:

You Know You're On A Budget When...

1) You've stopped checking expiration dates and started going by expiration smells.

2) You plan outings that cost money (including 'spontaneous Saturday') ahead of time. If you planned your spontaneous day, does it still count?

You know your limits.

3) You roll deep (in coupons).

4) The cashiers try to look busy when they see you headed their way.

5) Your Captain Crunch is Crisp Crunch. And it tastes every bit as good.

6) You haven't payed full price since back when you had a curfew. You've become more sensible now that Mommy and Daddy aren't bankrolling your life.

Well, a little more sensible.

7) You thought about moving closer to campus/work - for two seconds. Then you saw the rent.

8) You go to reunions and work events solely for the free food.

Smart Snackin'

Smart for Life makes a great variety of healthy food products designed to help busy, health-oriented individuals eat healthy with the same ease and convenience of packaged junk food.

I tried several of their products and they're actually just as tasty as they are convenient!

We'll start with the Smart for Life Protein Bars, since I'm the Queen of Bars. I got to try four different varieties.

Chocolate Peanut Butter, Caramel Almond, Chocolate, and Green Tea. I was most excited about the Green Tea flavored bar, since that's really unusual for a protein bar!

All four bars have similar nutritional stats - about 190 calories, 10g (or less) of sugar), a whopping 20g of protein, and 2g of fiber.

Though they're made with soy crisps for protein, none of these bars (or any of the Smart for Life products, as far as I'm aware) are vegan. They all contain whey (or dairy in some other form) and/or egg/egg whites.

But that's okay, because I'm not vegan!

So I tore right into the bars and, surprise surprise, the Green Tea bar ended up being my favorite (over the chocolate flavors, even)!

All of the bars have a similar texture - they're not like most protein bars, but rather more like a rice krispy treat (with a little bit of a malted flavor). They're not too sweet, but definitely sweet enough with their chocolate coatings (or, in the green tea bar's case) generous drizzle of icing.

In general, I prefer more traditional protein bar textures on the whole. But these are nice to switch things up!

Or if I feel like being a five-year-old with a rice krispie treat (sans sugar crash).

Smart for Life also makes pretty tasty cookies, as they ought to (they're the ones behind the cookie diet).

I didn't try the cookie diet cookies (which seem to be more oat-y, from what I see on the website) but got to try the Irresistible Winner Cookies, instead.

Seriously, who can resist trying a cookie with a name like that? I like confidence in a snack.

The cookies are individually wrapped, which makes them great for on-the-go snacking, or for those of us who need to work on the portion control. The little packs are nice, because they make it easier not to tear through the whole box at once.

Ahem, I'm looking at you, Girl Scout cookies.

With only 3g of sugar and 2g of fiber (that's as much as you'll get in a slice of whole wheat bread), they're also a really great option as a healthy snack. They're also pretty high in protein (6g) so they're a satisfying snack.

I'm not sure what happened to my photos of the actual cookies, my camera must have eaten them. Boo! But they look like the picture, which is always pleasant, and are of a pretty decent size - maybe about a two inch diameter?

Of the two, the chocolate chip cookies are my favorite. Both are tasty, but they also probably aren't what you think of when you think of a cookie. They're more of a cake-y cookie, with a layer of chocolate or peanut butter (respectively) frosting over them.

I didn't think the inner part of the chocolate chip cookie tasted very chocolatey, and the chocolate chips weren't as prominent as they could have been, but the chocolate shell made up for it. I haven't tried microwaving them, yet, though. I'll have to try that!

Next up was the Crunch, which is best described as a cake-y granola.

Just FYI - there's more in the pack than just those three pieces!

I actually really enjoyed these. They're great as a Greek yogurt topping with some blueberries and melted peanut butter. I liked that some of the pieces had dried fruits in them and, though they're liked chunks of muffin, they did have crunchy pieces throughout that I really enjoyed.

And only 3g of sugar (plus 5g of protein and 2g of fiber) makes them a great snack, or a wonderful alternative to granola, if you're looking for something a little lighter.

You get quite a bit of tasty, sweet snack there, for just the 90 calories. I'd definitely buy these again!

Last up were the Smart Bagel Chips.

One good-sized bag is a serving.

That's one of the things that I really liked about all of the Smart for Life products - they didn't try to use deceptive labeling or tiny portion sizes to skew their nutritional stats.

They're also whole-wheat and loaded with fiber, so they're a great snack!

I thought they tasted great on their own, or with some nut butter and jam (or cheese, or whatever else you like topping your bread or crackers with).

What's your favorite snack right now?

Van's Natural Foods New Products Review + Giveaway

We all know Van's Natural Foods for their whole grain freezer section eats. From frozen waffles to frozen French Toast Sticks, they have all sorts of healthy eats for us to enjoy at breakfast time or any other time of the day!

So I was super excited when I found out that Van's launched a line of new non-frozen foods in the new year!

There are two tasty whole grain cereals, Cinnamon Heaven and Honey Nut Crunch.

Both are gluten-free, made with Van's gluten free whole grain blend as the first ingredient. That's oat, brown rice, millet, quinoa, and amaranth flours!

There's a whopping 20% of your dietary fiber RDI in each tasty 3/4 cup serving!

Both varieties are delicious, just sweet enough but not too sweet. There's 7g of sugar in the honey nut variety and 8g of sugar in the cinnamon variety, so you don't have to worry about a mid-morning energy crash.

The cereals are great, but we all know the real way to my heart.

BARS!!!

Van's now has three varieties of whole grain, all-natural, gluten-free snack bars.

They're great for snacking, as a lunchbox addition, or as part of a healthy breakfast. They provide healthy whole grains and plentiful nutrients to fuel your day and activities!

They're also delicious and sweet, with rich almond butter and flavorful mix-ins (sweet-tart dried cranberries in one, sweet chocolate chips in the other) and make a delightful healthy dessert, especially if you microwave them for 30 seconds!

If you want to make it a little more indulgent, top a microwaved snack bar with a little ice cream. It's like a cookie sundae!

For those of you who are more in the mood for a little savory snacking, Van's has you covered, too.

There are three new gluten-free whole grain crackers: Lots of Everything, Say Cheese, and Multigrain.

If you're a Cheez-it fan, you'll love the Say Cheese crackers. They're a healthier version that's still tasty enough that the kids will beg for them. My little sister loves them!

The crackers all tasty, satisfying, and feel-good food. A lighter version than their traditional counterparts, these whole grain crackers aren't greasy and won't leave you feeling weighed down.

If you aren't already a Van's fan, this year is a great time to become one.

And Van's is giving away 4 free product coupons each to TWO lucky LLE readers! You have until March 18 to enter below for your chance to win!

As always, these opinions are 100% my own. I received samples to try, but was not obligated to write a positive review (or any review whatsoever, for that matter). I write it as I taste it, no fudging here!

Have you tried any of the new Van's products?

Do you ever microwave bars?

Do you notice a difference when you eat gluten free? I'm not gluten-free, but some of my friends have gluten intolerances or Celiac's Disease. For them, eating gluten-free makes a big difference!
