Best Game of Thrones Fashion

I tend not to follow television shows (I'm more a movies girl) but Game of Thrones definitely caught my interest! What can I say? It has it all - drama, intrigue, scandal, friendship, love, betrayal, amazing cinematography, great locations, and CLOTHES.

Seriously, it's no wonder Helmut Lang did an entire Game of Thrones-inspired line some seasons ago.

Helmut Lang
Khaleesi is the best dressed always and her name is great, to boot. Also, her hair. LOVE.

I don't know who's making all of her decadent dresses, considering that she's a princess without a kingdom riding through unfriendly lands with a savage Dothraki army. But however it's happening, her seamstress/stylist is to be commended.

And her hairstylist. Have I mentioned that I love her hair? She's totally rocking it. Gorgeous!

Now, it's a little more understandable how Sansa stays so well dressed.

Though she's far from my favorite, she stays well outfitted. If not bold or brave or anything else that commendable. Hey, you win some, you lose some.

Last, for this post, UM HELLO to this coat.

Those sleeves, that cut, that fabric.

Le sigh.

Can we dress like this in real life, please? Let's skip all the warring lands drama, but keep the fashion. 'Mkay?

Do you follow Game of Thrones?

If so, what is your favorite character?

What TV show has the best wardrobe, in your opinion?

Who Dresses Boston: Spotlight on Local Fashion!

Everyone knows (or should know) that New York City is a fashion mecca. But Boston gets much less attention! It is, admittedly, the underappreciated little sibling of NYC when it comes to fashion - but it still does have something to offer and, since I'm currently living in Boston (or Cambridge, but that totally counts), I've decided to take a moment to appreciate local fashion movers and shakers!

Nirva

It's chic, it's elegant, it's wearable. Check, check, check!

The line is best summed up by a single word - WANT. As in, I want all of it. Stunning!

Designed by women for women, their clothes are flattering and fab!

Runway to Reality - Spring 2014 Trends

I realize that I just did a post about winter 2014 trends last week and I also realize that the forecast is still pretty arctic in the northeast and midwest, as it will remain for a few more months.

But I'm from North Carolina. We wear flip flops and mini-skirts by Valentine's Day, so spring fashion is already relevant.

For those in warm climates, here's my take on what to wear and what to avoid from the spring '14 runway.

Hit: Pastels.

Costello Tagliapietra, Spring '14
Just try not to look like an Easter egg, 'mkay? It's easy to go Sunday-best-overboard in pastels, so I recommend leaving pastels for the floaty spring dresses and chic little ensembles, not pantsuits. That only works on Costello Tagliapietra's runway and in Willy Wonka's candy factory around the end of Lent.

Ish: Wide Leg Trousers.

Let's be honest - unless you have forty-four inch legs (points for reference) wide leg trousers aren't particularly flattering. You might thing that the looseness would make them more forgiving than the ever-tighter skinny jeans.

When Chanel tried it in 2011 - it didn't work then, it still doesn't work now. And Chanel can barely do any wrong (other than that hideodorous blouse) so...
Glamour called this a wearable trend?

HA.

You're wrong, my friend. Any normal person in these pants is going to look like you're trying to smuggle bread to a no-feeding-the-ducks park. I don't care if Michael Kors, Stella McCartney, BCBG, or even the Pope himself are doing it. PASS - like crosstotheothersideofthestreetandpass pass.

The only reason that this is an 'ish' and not a 'miss' is that I'm hoping it's an indicator of a more leg-friendly fashion future - a future in with a woman's legs can neither drown in material nor risk health issues from cut off circulation.

Miss: Tea-length skirts.

How could it get any worse than wide leg trousers?

Well, when you decide to draw fashion inspiration from Steve Urkel's twin sister, you're heading in the right direction.

WHAT. ON. EARTH.

Who decided that making skirts high-rise would be a nice idea? And what were they smoking? Because high rise pants just aren't tragic enough, let's let it happen to skirts.

Please, PLEASE either choose a long skirt, a knee length skirt, or a mini skirt. Anything, but don't decide to be indecisive and go for the in-between skirt - it doesn't work like that!

I'm going to go try to un-see that fashion atrocity by sighing over Vera Wang's latest work.

Runway to Reality: Winter 2014 Trends

Now that the polar vortex frigidness is past and face frostbite is no longer a real danger, we can finally shed the umpteen layers of anything-and-everything-that-could-possibly-block-the-wind-and-keep-in-warmth in favor of something that actually looks pretty. Here's a miss, a hit, and an ish from the winter 2014 runways!

Miss: Exotic furs.
Exotic furs Roberto Cavalli Fendi Versace
Maybe it's because I'm a vegetarian (though I do wear leather on occasion...) but I've just never been a fan of fur. Lately I've been seeing more and more oversized fur coats bustling down the streets of New York, nothing but a comparatively small head above and a pair of pointy heels below. It's not a good look and all I can think of is Cruella DeVil.

Fur looks best on the animals it grew on, in my opinion. I'm not an extreme animal rights activist, but I just think that's true. Fur has yet to appeal to me, ever.

Hit: Metallic mesh.

Metallic mesh Chloé Anthony Vaccarello Paco Rabanne

To be honest, I saw this one pop up on the streets and in the stores quite a while before I perused the runway snaps of the lines (Anthony Vaccarello, Paco Rabbanne, etc.) that are favoring metallic mesh this season.

While mesh done wrong can end up looking like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, pre-makeover, touches of it can add a fun futuristic edge to outfits, or just a fresh take on the partially bare skin idea (in a less ballerina-happy way than tulle).

Ish: Grunge.

The nineties were a fashion disaster of epic proportions and THANK GOD that someone finally decided to send a great portion of the fashion industry to methadone clinics or remind them that their wealth precludes the necessity of dumpster diving for fashion. Bathing is good, smelling bad is not. So this grunge thing?

Grunge Emilio Pucci Rodarte Saint Laurent

I'm not that thrilled that grunge is back, but the modern take on grunge seems much cuter than the original. It has the appeal of the laidback chill vibe without demanding an immediate intervention by family and friends. For the accessible version of the trend, check out Urban Outfitters.

If you're not offended by their many 'cutting edge' (read: racist) fashion campaigns. There was the drama with the Asian-inspired looks in the 90s and the more recent drama with the Native American inspired looks. They just don't learn.

Snarky Stylist: Best of Spring 2013 Collections

Before I get into the Snarky Stylist part of the post, I have a HUGE FAVOR to ask of you guys.

Will you pretty please vote for me in the L'oreal contest? Just click the link and then the little heart - I would sooooo appreciate it, and it would be super awesome if you'd get your Twitter/facebook friends to vote for me, too!

Okay, shameless plug is over - Snarky Stylist time!

Lest you think spring 2013 looks absolutely dismal for fashion (not the case AT ALL) after last week's Snarky Stylist review, here are some of my favorite looks from various spring 2013 collections!

DISCLAIMER: These are just a few of my favorite looks. There are so many style geniuses out there that I couldn't possibly fit all of my favorites into one post!

Rami Kadi
Rami Kadi has wrapped up all of my romantic fashion desires in one gown with this stunning number - I love the fabric and not a single fold is superfluous - everything adds to an absolutely stunning creation of pure decadence!

But Rami Kadi wasn't the only one who excelled at detailing.

Talbot Runhof
Talbot Runhof makes me (even more) proud to be German! Talk about a genius.

Erdem
A big round of applause to Erdem for making something that a normal woman would actually wear in her normal day-to-day life! And I love the shape of the shoes <3

Spring in Boston isn't necessarily summer weather all the time, so I appreciate that some designers planned in some cute colder weather looks, too!

Burberry Porsum
I love that jacket!! And the pants - so cute!

Often designers think that you have to be really over the top and different to be good.

I disagree. Just make it look good, it doesn't need to be made of saran wrap or trash bags!

MSGM
MSGM didn't do anything too inventive with this look, but the prints are great and they really show that classic cuts, but with new twists, can be really great!

Versus also really had fun with prints this season!

Versus
This season, Versus is sort of at the intersection of Zenon: Girl of the 21st century and Kindergarten chic.

It's odd, but it works!

Like this look from Chloe:

Chloe
A lot of the Chloe collection is just a lot of material, swallowing the girls entirely, but I do appreciate the shoulders on that top.

In fashion, like in life, you win some and you lose some.

A Fashionably Friendly Giveaway!

Who says fashion has to be cruel?

I'm not vegan, but even as a vegetarian I have a lot of issues with non-vegan leather. I'm just not huge on the idea of an animal's hide becoming my boots.

Unless you're Cruella, wearing puppies just isn't a good look.

And even Cruella only gets away with it because she's so fab.

But you can be totes fab (excuse me while I try to recover the half dozen IQ points I just dropped) in totally animal-friendly clothes! There are more and more vegan fashion lines out there and, in my opinion, if you'd even consider going vegan for either the animals or the environment, a vegetarian diet and a vegan wardrobe do much more than a vegan diet!

After all, eggs aren't already hatched (or even viable) baby chickens and milk doesn't kill the cow. But leather? It's pretty hard to separate a living animal from its skin...

But you really don't need to. Vegan fashion can be tres chic, as I'm about to prove, and super easy to find, too. There are even vegan online stores now, like Compassion Couture!

Because I really want all of y'all to give veganizing your wardrobes a serious thought, Compassionate Couture and I are giving away a $50 gift certificate to one lucky reader. You can get started on that super-fab, super-friendly wardrobe!

The giveaway is OPEN INTERNATIONALLY and ends January 27.

Anyway, to prove that vegan can be fashionable, here are some cute finds from Compassion Couture. Check out their website for more!

OlsenHaus - Egypt
Love is Mighty - Vajra Vegan Shoes - Diamond
Gunas Scarlet Vegan Wallet/Wristlet
I was so tempted to throw in some cute animal photos here, but that would be totally annoying and PETA of me (and I'm not their biggest fan). So I won't. But some other day...
