Review + Giveaway: GoMacro's Thrive Bars

MacroBars are delicious and GoMacro, the company behind them, has recently released a new line of Thrive bars!

Thrive bars are made up of a superfood ancient grain blend, are vegan, and provide plant-based protein, essential fatty acids, and prebiotic fiber.

Thrive by GoMacro

I tried six delicious flavors - chocolate, nuts & sea salt, blueberry lavender, chocolate peanut butter chip, ginger lemon, almond apricot, and caramel coconut.

Healthy Vegan Superfood Bars

How delicious do those flavors sound? Especially chocolate, nuts & sea salt, peanut butter chocolate chip (noticing a trend?), and caramel coconut.

Thrive Bars are all USDA-certified organic, non-gmo, kosher, certified gluten-free, soy-free, and 100% vegan. There's nothing in them that you don't want in you!

And unlike some bars, where it feels like you either have to suck it up and pay shipping fees or you have to go on an epic journey to hunt them down, Thrive Bars are available in stores at Whole Foods as of this month, October 2016. Yay!

GoMacro Thrive Bars Review

I can definitely stand behind their front of package pitch 'Ingredients: Grown Not Made.' Works for me!

Especially because they're chewy, the right amount of sweet, and flavorful.

Thrive by GoMacro Review

They're filling, hearty, chewy, and have a nice crunch from the ancient grains. I liked all the flavors, but was surprised to find that I liked the fruit flavors, like Ginger Lemon (above) a lot more than I expected! They're not boring or flat at all, likely due to the spices that they mix in.

But don't take my word for it - try them yourselves! The team at GoMacro is giving away one box of assorted Thrive bars (MSRP $26.28) to one lucky Living, Learning, Eating reader.

Just enter below by midnight on 11/05. Good luck!

Weeknight Convenience with Marley Spoon!

Those of you who follow me on Instagram know that I love to bake and cook.

My Irresistible Irish Soda Bread
If you follow me, you also know that I recently left my flexible, but also all over the place, schedule as a freelance writer and print model behind to join the 9-5(ish) world as a children's entertainment writer. I love my job!

But that doesn't mean that adjusting to the new, structured schedule didn't require a little work. While I no longer have to be up at 5am on shoot or writing until 2am to meet a deadline, I also don't have time to pop out in the afternoon for a grocery run or precook part of an elaborate dinner when the mood strikes me.

But home cooked dinners are not only fun to make, they're also generally more nutritious than eating out and that's important to stay healthy and happy!

Luckily, there's a middle ground between the time-effective but less nutritious option of eating out and the healthy but time-consuming process of grocery shopping, recipe finding, prepping, and cooking your own dinner. It's called Marley Spoon!

Work-Week Convenience with a Discount!

Who else can't believe that it's already the second week of May? Summer is just around the bend!

While the approach of summer can mean anything from travel, to more time outdoors, to just soaking up the sun on your way to work, the time before summer often can get a little hectic. With so many people going on vacations during the summer months, a lot of work is front-loaded and that makes May a little crazy!

Luckily, a crazy busy schedule doesn't mean that you can't enjoy balanced, nutritious meals that taste great. Diet to Go delivers a week of frozen meals at a time and can work with all sorts of styles of eating, from vegetarian to low fat to low carb.

Fall Reset with JuiceRx

I love fall and winter and all the wonderful things that come with the seasons - the return of layering, the magical appearance of heavenly scented candles all over my home, CHRISTMAS, snow, and a wonderful abundance of apples and kabocha.

Like with most things in life, however, there's a trade off with the shifting seasons. A lot of people find themselves feeling a little out of sorts when the weather shifts for the winter.

While a lot of that is due to difficult-to-avoid biological things (like vitamin D deficiency from reduced exposure to high quality direct sunlight) I think part of it could be due to the seasonal dietary shift.

In summer, we're eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables day in and day out. In winter, they're less readily available. But our bodies just feel better when they're well nourished and how we feel physically definitely affects our moods!

Enjoy every beautiful day and feel your best by making a conscious effort to continue to find healthy foods that taste great and make you feel great! I like JuiceRx juices and the yummy raw vegan meals from their new FoodRx venture!

The gingerade is spicy and refreshing, a perfect alternative to ginger ale. Because of the fun lemon twist, it doesn't get boringly sweet after a sip or two, like ginger ale can. It's also great if your stomach feels a little off, because ginger is soothing and helps with nausea. Perfect for flu season!

Pumpkin lovers are also covered. The pumpkin Spice a Milk is a rich, creamy drink that's substantial enough for a meal or a hearty snack and is as decadent as pumpkin pie, but much more energizing.

The dates make it sweet, the carrots and pumpkin make it pretty, the spices make it festive, and the pumpkin seeds make it filling, rich, and great for your skin and hair! Once the heating comes on in the winter, it can really dry out your skin. Taking extra care to keep your skin beautiful from the inside out is so much more effective and lasting than buying lots of expensive creams and lotions.

People always comment on my skin, but I don't use any sort of washes or potions or scrubs - just a standard daily moisturizer when I remember it. Sure, it's definitely partly genetic. But I also think it probably doesn't hurt that I love healthy foods that are great for my skin! Nuts, guys, go for the nuts.

For the green juice lovers (to the ranks of which I definitely count) there are several great green juices.

They're all fairly mild and have a great fruit: vegetable ratio for sweetness. Of the three that I tried, the Green Glow was my favorite!

On to the food.

Love chili in the winter? Their raw vegan chili is so delicious that you won't care in the least that it's not hot. It's filled with almonds, making it hearty and satisfying, as well as great spices and veggies!

I'm generally not a huge sour cream fan, but I actually enjoyed the raw vegan sour cream that came with this dish.

Unfortunately the packaging could use some adjustments for shipping (as you can see, it spilled a bit during shipping and made a mess), but the sauce itself was great. It's not thick like a dairy sour cream (definitely more of a sauce) but still creamy.

The Angel Hair With Hemp Seed Pasta dish was delicious and one of the best dishes I've ever had with kelp noodles. Yum!

Never forgo dessert! The great think about FoodRx chocolate mousse is that you don't have to worry about saving space for it after your meal.

It's healthy enough that you can incorporate it into your meal! And you can even have it for breakfast.

In fact, I recommend eating it off breakfast. I used it to make a delicious layered parfait with crunchy edamame, granola, apples, and blueberries.

Yummy!

From now until November 20, 2014 you can also get 10% off any order with the coupon code LLE10! Head into the holidays feeling healthier than ever with JuiceRx!

Raw Generation Juice Review

Can you believe we're wrapping up summer?

I didn't have a summer vacation this year, since I moved to NYC and started working just days after graduation. I've had a lot of fun this summer, however, and have an awesome vacation planned for September, though, so don't feel bad for me.

I also got an awesome package in the mail - so, you know, win.

I'm going to Hawaii!! I'm so excited, I've never been that far west (not to mention to Hawaii, which seems like a world wonder from the photos in the guidebooks I've been obsessively going through).

I have a ton of plans for Hawaii, including trying Stand Up Paddle-boarding, taking another surfing lesson, lots of chilling on the beach, and hopefully some nice hikes and/or bike rides around the island.

The last thing I want for such a sure-to-be-fantastic trip is to go feeling any less than my best. Feeling good happens from the inside out and that brings me to my awesome package.

I received some Raw Generation juice in the mail! The timing was great, as it's a delicious way to nourish my body and make my sensitive stomach a little less on edge in preparation for my trip.

But let's be honest - when isn't a good time for delicious fruit and vegetable blend juices?

They're shipped frozen and packed on ice, which I love, because it means that I can keep them in the freezer and drink them as I want. There's no rush to drink them all up before a certain expiration date, so it's up to the individual whether they want to do a full juice cleanse with six juices a day, a partial juice cleanse with four juices and a meal or two, or supplement their normal diet with the juices.

However you do it, including adding the juices to your regular diet, they're really easy to drink (so sweet and delicious) and really great for you - it's 100% juice with loads of vitamins, no added sugars, and nothing but fruit and vegetables!

I also have fabulous news, since I'm in a super happy going-on-vacation-soon mood (and, mostly, because Jessica at Raw Generation is really nice): all Living, Learning, Eating readers get 40% off with the coupon code LIVELEARNEAT!

Yum :)

Where are you going on vacation next (or hoping to)?

Where did you last go on vacation?

What's your favorite type of juice?

Onyx Box Review - Adventures in Beauty

I reviewed a hair care OnyxBox the other day, but was pleasantly surprised to discover that, due to popular demand, they've created a beauty/makeup box, too!

Cue the excitement.

Also, can we take a minute to delight in how pretty the packaging is? I love pink (as you can tell) and the hot pink tissue paper with the pretty logo sticker is so nice. It makes you super excited to get to the beauty goodies inside!

The April OnyxBox had $110 worth of full-size Cargo Cosmetics products.

Considering that an OnyxBox subscription is only $25 per month, that's an amazing deal. You're paying for less than a quarter of the retail value!

The selection of products was great. As one would expect of high quality makeup products, the containers are cute and robust, so you can easily stick them in your handbag if you're out for a long day and want to have the option of doing touch-ups.

The powder blush was a beautiful peachy-rosy color, with an orange undertone that's great for brown skin.

Pure pink or red blush can look so artificial and unattractive on darker skin, but the orangey hue picks up some natural skin tone colors and looks great.

Darker skinned girls could probably get away with using more of it, but since I'm lighter skinned and don't wear blush anyway (I already blush from cold, activity, and embarrassment) just a light swipe was perfect.

Next up was the eye shadow. I was expecting a golden or bronze-ish natural hue, since that's what I wear (when I wear it - I'm more of an eyeliner girl usually) and often see on other African American models in ads. I missed by a mile!

Blue eyeshadow probably makes most of us think of the 80s, but it's really underappreciated. Especially for darker skin, it can be a color with a lot of depth!

This isn't using the Cargo makeup, but here's some blue eyeshadow inspiration from a shoot I did a while ago.

The Philip B White Truffle Shampoo was a throwback to OnyxBox's hair care roots (see what I did there? Hahahaha...). It's a small shampoo, but so decadent and it smells so good. It's a really rich shampoo and makes your hair feel and smell great!

Back to the makeup.

So remember how I said I'm more of an eyeliner than an eyeshadow girl, though I can appreciate both?

This eyeliner pencil was really great. The tip didn't break, it went on smooth (no unpleasantly sharp and brittle No. 2 pencil-style eyeliner pencil), and the color lasted all day. I really liked it and, as someone who generally prefers liquid eyeliner for ease of application, that's saying something!

Last up was a lovely pink long wear lip gloss. It wasn't as super shiny as some lip glosses can be, so it's something you can wear beyond the age of 13 and/or to work. The color was nice, not too sharply pink but still with nice color, and didn't immediately kiss off onto my glass when I drank something.

I can see why this beauty box is back due to popular demand - I loved it!

What's your beauty prep routine?

Do you wear the same makeup every time you wear it, or do you like to mix it up?

How often do you wear makeup?

December Bestowed Box Review + A Discount Code!

As you know from my previous reviews, I'm a big fan of Bestowed Box.

It's a great way to try new foods and learn about new healthy products. Health foods can often be on the more expensive end of things, and I'm not a fan of any sort of food waste (even if the food isn't particularly expensive), so it's great to be able to try a wide variety of things without having to buy large, full-sized containers or multipacks of anything.

Bestowed Box subscriptions are a great gift for adventurous eaters, foodies, unadventurous eaters trying to expand their horizons, health nuts, and those trying to eat healthier. It's also a great gift to yourself! Receiving a fun orange box of surprise goodies every month is a great way to build in a mood booster into your life.

It's also a great way to make progress on two resolutions - expanding your horizons (trying new things!) and the ever popular eat healthy foods one. It's a great way to get some healthy snacks into the pantry after the somewhat unbalanced holiday feasting that a lot of us do (myself included! It's okay - it's the holidays - but it shouldn't be permanent).

This also becomes true for parents, once you move out to college - they start loving you so much that home becomes one delicious Candy Land! Whodathunk.
And they're reasonably priced for all that you get (see the bottom of the post for a discount code)!

Every month, nutritionist Heather Bauer selects some great products with a theme to share with Bestowed box subscribers.

This December, Heather got into the holiday spirit by putting together a box full of products that give back to the community in some way, whether through a popular organization (like Make-a-Wish) or a unique way. Read more about the way the individual products give back online!

My mom happy-danced when she saw the Saffron Road Thai Red Curry Simmer Sauce.

Okay. So she doesn't actually ever dance. But she was really happy! She loves these - they're healthy and make meal prep super fast and easy - just add meat and/or veggies, cook up some rice to go with the main dish, and you have an ethnic restaurant-worthy meal with better nutrition and less cost/hassle!

My 8-year-old sister loved the All-Natural Baked CHeddar Fries from Snikiddy. And parents love them just as much as kids do! While kids love the cheesy, crunchy snack for its flavor and mouthfeel, parents love that it's non-GMO, gluten free, and has 50% less fat than regular potato chips. Made of cornmeal and potato, it also packs so nutrition - including some healthy digestion-promoting fiber!

I couldn't get enough of the I Heart Keenwah Ginger Peanut Quinoa Clusters - ginger and peanut just belong together, I don't know why I haven't done it before! They're sweet, crunchy, nutty and delicious!

Same goes for the KIND Snacks Dark Chocolate Chili Almond Bar, which helped me make it through a last-minute packing debacle for my fabulous family vacation (photos to come! I love my fam-bam).

All good stuff and great taste.

We can't wait to try the Simply Organic Mediterranean Herb Greek Yogurt Dip (just add plain yogurt!) and my mom loves that the Pacific Organic Chicken Stock is unsalted and all-natural. No additives here!

As always, you can order more of anything that you really like on Bestowed Box's website. It's so convenient, I love it.

Okay, so here's what you really want - the coupon! Enter the discount code HELLOYUM40 at checkout to get your first Bestowed box for only $10 (normally $19). This code expires on 12/31 (in just a few days!) so be sure not to dawdle in putting your order in!
