Friday Foodie Finds: Whole Grains

I'm doing another Friday Foodie Finds today, after skipping a week, because there have been some great new recipes cropping up out there and I'd like to sort them.

So today's post is a recipe round-up of whole grain recipes from around the blogosphere!

cinbread (1 of 1)

This gets bonus points because (a) quinoa is a superfood and packed with protein, (b) it's actually a quick and easy recipe - who would have thought?!

As a busy college kid, quick and easy scores major points in my book.

PumpkinSquares570 Pumpkin Pie Squares

With fall still a good half a year away (spring just started!) pumpkins and pumpkin pie might just be the last thing on your mind. But if you do happen to still have a can of pumpkin pie in your pantry, I say pumpkin isn't just for Thanksgiving.

These bites are quick, easy, and healthy (sweetened with medjool dates!) and appropriate for any time of the year!

Now if that doesn't look more delicious than another bowl of oatmeal...

These feature sprouted oat flour and look delicious - chocolate and banana are a pretty winning combination, especially when peanut butter joins the party!

This one isn't blatantly whole grain, but you can easily make it whole grain by using whole grain pasta shells. I tend to prefer those anyway, as they have a nice nuttiness that the regular kind don't!

What's the last new recipe that you tried?

Are you going to try any new recipes this weekend (which ones)?

How often do you try new recipes?

Friday Foodie Finds #38: German foods!

Last week's Friday Foodie Finds featured recipes for Maple Syrup Saturday. The week before featured greek yogurt-based recipes. Today, let's take a look at some German recipes from around the blogosphere.

I love Germany :)

And German food is just absolutely delicious.

Quick German Recipe's Bratkartoffeln

Fried Potatoes

Pretzel Buns

We mustn't forget the Christmas treats, either, though they're a bit out of season at the moment!

Roxana's Stollen

Sneh's Lebkuchen

Lebkuchen and milk
Do you know what other German foods I really miss when I'm stateside?

Other than German bread and broetchen (and chocolate!) I really miss German dairy! I don't know what it is (maybe something in the pasteurization process?) but German yogurt, milk, buttermilk, quark, and ice cream somehow just taste so much yummier!

Though we do have the Germans beat as far as fro-yo goes and toppings for ice cream. And energy bars.

What's your favorite world cuisine?

What food do you miss most from abroad?

What's your favorite dessert?

Friday Foodie Finds #37: Maple Syrup Saturday

Did you know that tomorrow is Maple Syrup Saturday?

Food holidays are such fun!

In case you just found out that tomorrow is Maple Syrup Saturday and are thus still in need of some last-minute ideas of how to celebrate, here are some maple-tastic ways to be festive tomorrow!

Start with day right with whole wheat pancakes topped with cranberry maple syrup.

As your mid-morning pick-me-up, reach for a chilly glass of maple iced coffee.

When lunchtime rolls around, have a side of corn on the cob with smokehouse maple chipotle butter.

For that mid-afternoon coffee and cake, enjoy a slice of maple syrup pie. Maybe watch some ice hockey or something to feel extra Canadian.

While you're waiting for dinner to cook, snack on some maple syrup-roasted tomatoes.

Who knew this humble natural sweetener is so versatile? Food holidays are such a fun excuse to try new things!

What is your favorite food holiday?

What's your favorite way to use maple syrup?

Friday Foodie Finds #36: White Chocolate Perfection

It's Friday Foodie Finds time!

This week, let's satisfy our white chocolate cravings. I tend to lean towards dark chocolate, but sometimes white chocolate can be really delicious, too (even though it's not really chocolate).

Since last week's Friday Foodie Finds (all about greek yogurt!) totally left out the vegans, I've made sure to include a vegan (V) recipe this week. Enjoy!

Hmm, I may have to go make those pancakes...

What's your favorite kind of chocolate?

What's the most unique pancake you've ever had?

Friday Foodie Finds #35: Greek Yogurt Edition!

It's finally March!!

March is awesome. All of the coolest kids are born in March.

Tee-hee.

Anyway, it's Friday! Yaaaaay!

Today's Friday Foodie Finds features greek yogurt, since it's one of my favorite foods. Since greek yogurt is today's star, however, none of these recipes are vegan.

No worries, I'll have some vegan recipes again next week!

Those look like they would be absolutely amazing fresh from the oven with peanut butter and strawberry jam, don't they?

Greek Yogurt Chocolate Bread Recipe
Frankly, all of these recipes look really delicious.

But my favorite way to eat greek yogurt is still in a parfait with granola, dried fruits, seeds, and nut butter.

I don't think that will ever change.

Do you prefer greek or regular yogurt?

How often do you eat some sort of yogurt? For me, it's multiple times per day every day!

What is your birthday month?

Friday Foodie Finds #34: Surprise Veggies Edition

I like finding veggies in unexpected places - like greens in brownies, beans in cookie pies, carrots in flap jacks, and spinach in smoothies (though the green monster craze has made that last one less than unusual).

Here are some great surprise veggie recipes from around the blogosphere!

Post Christmas Detox Pancakes - 7

Sorry, but these spinach-packed pancakes are waaaaaay too scrum-diddly-umptious to save for just post-Christmas!

I would not have guessed that there's squash lurking in these, nor would I have guessed that they're sugar- and grain-free...

It speaks for itself. And it's saying 'I have ooey gooey chocolate chips, EEEEAAAAT ME.'

Beet Burger

Though it may turn your pea funny colors (over-share) this burger looks waaaaay yummier to me than the standard Boca burger.

What's your favorite surprise veggie recipe? If it's online, please leave a link!

What are your weekend plans?

When does your workday end on Fridays?

Friday Foodie Finds #33

February is Heart Health month - so this Friday Foodie Finds features heart healthy recipes that will make looking out for your heart's health delicious!

Allison's No-Bake Blueberry Bars (V, R, GF)

Talk about a yummy breakfast food! These pancakes look amazing, too!

Midwest Living's Four Grain Pancakes

Flax, oats, wheat germ, and whole grain flour make these great for fueling your ticker well!

But heart-healthy yummies aren't limited to breakfast. There are plenty of great lunch options, too!

Mitch's

And is there anyone else out there who's super in love with orange foods? I swear I'm going to turn orange from all the sweet potatoes, carrots, sundried tomatoes, and squash that sneak onto my plate every day. But it'll be worth it ;)

Better Homes and Garden Sweet Potato Fries (V)

But you know me. I can't ignore dessert. So here's a heart healthy treat to add a sweet ending to your meal!

Heart Healthy Living's Mocha Pudding Cake

It's hard to believe that decadent dessert is heart-healthy, but so it is - proof that heart healthy can be delicious, too!

Like this raw, organic, gluten-free, paleo, macrobiotic granola from The Purest Way!

Chef Angela Webster  hand-makes all dairy-free, sugar-free, soy-free, grain-free, gluten-free, non-GMO, and organic treats that are prepared with both nutrition and taste in mind!

While the granola isn't particularly low carb (it's dressed with honey - or maple syrup if you ask for the vegan version - and has dates and mulberries) it's gluten-free and grain-free, so people following a paleo diet or with gluten intolerance can enjoy it, too! It's all 100% raw and 100% organic, made with only the best quality ingredients.

Which pays off in tastiness! Macadamia nuts and dates are the predominant flavors, but you can taste all of the delicious nuts and seeds. I really like the addition of the white mulberries, they go excellently with the almonds and sunflower seeds!

Anyway, with all of those healthy fats this granola from The Purest Way makes for a very heart-healthy breakfast!

You can also check out the Groovy Gourmet website for a vegan nacho cheese kale recipe and other good stuff!

Which recipe looks best to you?

What's your favorite heart healthy food?

What's your go-to breakfast at the moment?

Friday Foodie Finds #32

It's Valentine's Day next Thursday!

I've never had a Valentine on Valentine's Day, so I've never really celebrated it. My mom sometimes sends me chocolate and my little sister sometimes sends me a card, but the whole romance thing? Not so much.

But I won't be a single grouch! Let the couples enjoy themselves. Here are some great Valentine's Day recipes to share with your special someone next week!

I think the one with the caramel and nuts (roughly in the center) looks yummiest! In general, though, I'm not the biggest chocolate covered strawberries fan.

I don't know why - I love chocolate and I love strawberries, but I just don't love them together.

Kristin's & Sharon's Calzone Hearts

Figs are supposedly an aphrodisiac, so why not try this out on that cute guy from lecture (or work)?

3 chocolate fig tarts Chocolate Fig Tarts | Fresh Figs in Good Company

Even if figs don't really make people more amorous, who can resist such a yummy looking tart?

Did anyone know that carrots are supposedly an aphrodisiac, too? I didn't, but they're definitely delicious!

Stephanie's

Raspberry Crepes with Cream Cheese filling & walnuts
Ooh, I think I might just be my own Valentine so that I can make those Pan-Crepes for myself on Thursday morning - they look delicious!

But if you're also still looking for a gift for your Valentine (which, again, can be yourself - no judgment!) you might want to check out Healthy Surprise.

Healthy Surprise is a monthly subscription service that's literally 'the gift that keeps giving.'

They have a starter box, a healthy box, and a larger box that are all packed with an assortment of delicious, nutritious goodies (the only variable is how much is in each box).

And for the international readers, they ship worldwide!

Everything in the box is vegan, gluten-free, natural, and soy-free. They choose what they put in each month carefully, so all you have to think about it what you're going to eat first - everything is guaranteed (110%) to be healthy and tasty!

If you're sending a Healthy Surprise Box as a gift basket, it comes with a personalized 5.5" x 8.5" full color glossy print card - that's a real card size, not like the dinky little tags you get with flower baskets.

Chocolate Macaroons!!!!!!!!!!
Frankly, if I had the option of choosing between a bouquet of decaying plant genitalia and a box full of this healthy goodness, Healthy Surprise wins every time.

Bars: the way to my heart. And they even sent two new-to-me bars: that's a rare find these days!
Sorry, but flowers just aren't as romantic as a box full of goodies that I can snack on all month - goodies that will make me feel every bit as good as they taste. I love when delicious food is healthy!

Like the Live Smart Cranberry-Pumpkin Seeds Raw Energy Bar! Full of healthy fats and plant energy, it's a tasty way to fuel up between meals.

And I'm still super impressed that Healthy Surprise managed to introduce me to a new bar that I had never even heard of before! That's really rare, considering that I'm the queen of bars :)

And you really can't beat Healthy Surprise convenience.

A full-sized bag of allergy-friendly trail mix and YUM YUM  YUM gluten-free Skinny Crisps!
Healthy Surprise is also my favorite subscription service thus far, because I find that it has a more unique assortment of healthy goodies than competitors, like Conscious Box.

I, for one, have never even heard of Nori Wrapped Power Wraps before, but they're delicious seed-y, flavorful sticks of energy and a delightful snack!

They're not sweet, as I had expected, but rather savory and rich from the seeds. They also have quite the spicy kick!

I really like how they wrapped it in Nori sheets. It reminds me of a healthy, vegan version of pepperoni sticks - but way yummier!

Kale chips, salty chocolate granola (Oh. My. Gosh.), bars, chocolate, dried fruits, and other healthy, tasty snacks galore - I love Healthy Surprise!

They really think of everything, even a squeeze pack of 100% fruit juice (mango pear pineapple!) to wash down the deliciousness.

What's your most memorable Valentine's Day memory?

Have you ever ordered a food subscription service?

Do you like flowers?
