Review: Rawvolution Box (and a discount!)

It's pilot season, tax season, and the season of trying to get our lives (and bodies) in shape. The perfect time for a little boost from a convenient meal delivery service, no?

While meal delivery services tend to be pricier than making your own food, and often even more expensive than eating out, they can be really helpful when you're busy. You don't have to think about getting or making food, it's just waiting for you in your fridge when you're hungry! That sounded totally ideal to me, so I decided to give Rawvolution, the raw vegan meal delivery service endorsed by Alicia Silverstone, Cher, Carol Alt, and other glamorous LA types, a try. LA loves it and now there's nationwide shipping, so NYC must love it, too, right?

...well... this will be a really mixed bag review, because the food was AMAAAAAAAAZING but the logistics of long-distance shipping left a bit to be desired.

My experience started on a less than great note. Admittedly, the chaotic deliver wasn't the company's fault, but due to weather/UPS. The food was supposed to arrive by 1:30pm on Tuesday. Instead, it arrived at 8pm on Wednesday. Grrrrr. Considering that next day shipping to NYC costs between $60 and $100 per box, depending on the speed you select, that sort of delay can be quite frustrating.

Worse, the food arrived only cool (not cold) to the touch - after spending $120 on the meals (that's the cost without shipping) I was worried that some of the food might go bad before I could eat it all.

Not as bad, but also not appealing, is the presentation. While LA customers receive their meals in deli containers, shipping customers receive their meals vacuum sealed in plastic bags - a not at all appetizing presentation, especially for the wet dishes (which is over half of them). Shipping costs are already super high, though, and I suppose the meals are vacuum sealed to keep them from being positively astronomical.

Rawvolution 'The Box' Review

On to the next thing - the contents of The Box. Boxes are non-customizable, so you get whatever the fixed menu is each week, in fixed amounts.

I received:

1. Green Cleanse Fresh-Pressed Juice
2. Roots Infusion Fresh-Pressed Juice
3. No Bean Hummus
4. French Carrot Salad
5. Cauliflower Couscous
6. Creamy Sunflower Seed Salad
7. Nut & Veggie Pate Wrap
8. Enchilada Blanca
9. Greek Pizza
10. Sloppy Joe Sandwich
11. Pecan Crumble
12. Cinnamon Raisin Balls

I'm not much of a juice drinker and would rather have traded the two juices ($20 worth of product, if you divide the total cost by the twelve items in the box) for more of something else. I also would have probably swapped a few other menu items. If I could tweak the service, I'd make opting in and out of menu items the first change.

Anyway, onto the actual food. While there may still be some significant kinks to work out with the long distance shipping service, the food itself is INCREDIBLE and Chef Matt definitely has real talent for turning healthy vegetables into delicious meals! Seriously, the food was among the best I've ever eaten and, if I had infinite money and the shipping issues were worked out, I'd order from Rawvolution every single week.

Review + Giveaway: GoMacro's Thrive Bars

MacroBars are delicious and GoMacro, the company behind them, has recently released a new line of Thrive bars!

Thrive bars are made up of a superfood ancient grain blend, are vegan, and provide plant-based protein, essential fatty acids, and prebiotic fiber.

Thrive by GoMacro

I tried six delicious flavors - chocolate, nuts & sea salt, blueberry lavender, chocolate peanut butter chip, ginger lemon, almond apricot, and caramel coconut.

Healthy Vegan Superfood Bars

How delicious do those flavors sound? Especially chocolate, nuts & sea salt, peanut butter chocolate chip (noticing a trend?), and caramel coconut.

Thrive Bars are all USDA-certified organic, non-gmo, kosher, certified gluten-free, soy-free, and 100% vegan. There's nothing in them that you don't want in you!

And unlike some bars, where it feels like you either have to suck it up and pay shipping fees or you have to go on an epic journey to hunt them down, Thrive Bars are available in stores at Whole Foods as of this month, October 2016. Yay!

GoMacro Thrive Bars Review

I can definitely stand behind their front of package pitch 'Ingredients: Grown Not Made.' Works for me!

Especially because they're chewy, the right amount of sweet, and flavorful.

Thrive by GoMacro Review

They're filling, hearty, chewy, and have a nice crunch from the ancient grains. I liked all the flavors, but was surprised to find that I liked the fruit flavors, like Ginger Lemon (above) a lot more than I expected! They're not boring or flat at all, likely due to the spices that they mix in.

But don't take my word for it - try them yourselves! The team at GoMacro is giving away one box of assorted Thrive bars (MSRP $26.28) to one lucky Living, Learning, Eating reader.

Just enter below by midnight on 11/05. Good luck!

If you don't want to wait, get 30% off of your order of Thrive bars using the promo code Thrive30.

October Degustabox Unboxing

Did you see my September Degustabox Unboxing?

It's a new month - how is it already October 2016?? - and with a new month comes a new Degustabox! To refresh, Degustabox is a monthly subscription service that delivers a big box full of full-sized foodie finds (10-15 of them!) to subscribers every month.

I love getting mail, trying new things, and good food. It's perfect!

I love that every box comes with a greeting sheet telling me a bit more about all the products in the box on one side and offering up some relevant recipes on the other side.

There are typically also some coupons in the mix, to help you save money if you like any of the products so much that you want to buy more. Yay for coupons! My mom instilled a great appreciation for coupons in me - sometimes we'd get an entire grocery cart full of food for like $7 and it always felt so amusingly satisfying.

Anyway, on to the actual food! We'll start with the food that accompanied the two recipes included in this box:

Healthy Pasta Dish

Barilla is my go-to brand for pasta (check out my mac & cheese recipe) and as a carb-loving vegetarian, I was thrilled to see that I could get 17g of protein and a good dose of ALA Omega-3 fatty acids from eating my pasta, with their new high-protein multigrain pasta.

Review: Paleo Scavenger Granola

Granola is my absolute favorite sort of cereal. Nuts are my favorite crunchy snack. So a granola made almost entirely out of nuts sounded delicious!

It didn't disappoint. Paleo Scavenger Granolas are handcrafted in Chicago and, as the name suggests, completely grain-free, gluten-free, and paleo-friendly.

Instead of the usual grains, these granolas are made of healthy nuts, like almonds, walnuts, and coconut, as well as dried fruit and natural sweeteners, like honey and maple syrup!

Healthy fats are so important for healthy skin and hair! Paleo Scavenger granolas are a much better choice than many other commercial granolas, which can often be packed with processed sugars and sometimes even trans fats. I would much rather have a breakfast or snack that keeps my skin soft and glowing and my hair shiny and healthy!

They're also all delicious! They're not what I would first think of when I think of granola and they do taste different than other granolas, so I would say they're somewhere between granola and trail mix.

Review: Bhu Fit Bars

As the temperatures rise and summer sets in, many of us find ourselves on the go much more than during the cooler months. Whether it's traveling or simply spending more time outside at parks, beaches, lakes, and so on, summertime is all about going out and having adventures!

Bhu Fit Bars  from Bhu Foods are the perfect grab-and-go choice for healthy snacking away from home. They're conveniently packaged, like traditional protein bars, and they're made of only healthy, whole foods. That's rare to find in a protein bar!

The bars are no-GMO, gluten-free, and full of healthy protein and digestion-regulating fiber. They're also wonderfully low in sugar, without relying on unhealthy chemical sweeteners, like sucralose.

They come in three main types, all of which are oh so delicious and oh so good for you!

There are the vegan bars, which are made with organic pea protein and come in three great flavors. Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip is my favorite, but Chocolate Tart Cherry Pistachio is delicious, too!

Bhu Fit Chocolate Tart Cherry Pistachio Vegan Bar
Many chocolate-flavored protein bars feature chocolate as the main flavor, but these bars have just a little bit of chocolate, so that the other flavors still shine, too. The bars have a chewy texture and aren't too big, but also not too small! They're perfectly snack-sized.

Tips for Better Train Travel (AKA There's Spinach in My Chocolate)

I'm moving to Boston for the summer on Sunday (summer is coming so quickly!) and I'm going to take the Amtrak up again, like last year.

I go/have gone back and forth between NYC and Boston quite often over the years and Amtrak is almost always my choice. It's faster, more reliable, and more comfortable than a bus. It's slower than flying, but if you account for the time spent getting to the airports, which are, unlike train stations, outside of the city, as well as TSA time. It also has less strict limits on the amount of luggage allowed, which is great when the trip will last multi-months and you have to pack a lot.

forget-bring-farewell-ecard-someecards

I would honestly have expected it to be much cheaper than a flight, but it's usually only slightly cheaper. It's still always the overall cheaper option, however, because you can take the subway to the train stations easily whereas airports generally require a cab or Uber ride.

Still, there's no perfect form of transportation. Here are my tips for a better train trip!

Review: Sundance Vegan Milk Chocolate

For those of you saw my recent Sundance Bar review and despaired that the only dairy-free chocolates seem to be dark chocolate, I have good news. Sundance Bar makes a delicious vegan "milk" chocolate bar, as well!

The milk is coconut milk powder!

Four Fun February Foods

Trying new things is always so fun! It's no secret that I love to cook and bake and generally play with food in the hopes that something awesome (and edible) happens. Here are four fun February foods that I'm trying this month!

Since Valentine's Day is tomorrow, don't worry - if you're super behind this year, it's not too late to retreat to the kitchen, cover things in flour, and emerge with a sure-to-please food gift for your special someone!

I give these toasted coconut and cherry hand pies a glowing recommendation.

They're really cute, super festive, taste great, and make a beautiful gift. If you follow Kim's recipe exactly, they're also pretty quick and easy to make! I like to make my own pie crust so that the whole recipe is from scratch, but that's the only thing that I did differently.

Read on for more great gifts, festive foods, and even something for those who like to avoid all things Valentine's Day!

We don't have to compromise taste or convenience for good nutrition. Nookie Bars  have yummy chocolate, healthy fats and sugars for the energy we need to make it through the rest of our days, and even the superfood spirulina!

Review: Sundance Bars

Was eating more plantbased foods or less added sugar one of your New Year's Resolutions? Don't worry, you don't have to give up chocolate - not even milk chocolate!

Sundance Bars are made of organic raw ground cacao nibs, organic raw cacao butter, coconut milk powder, organic raw coconut oil, erythritol, steviol, nut butter, lemon or lime juice, and cayenne pepper - that's it!

With no added sugar, antioxidants from the cacao, and healthy fats from the coconut oil, it's chocolate that's healthful and can easily fit into any healthy balanced diet, even if you have dietary restrictions like veganism or raw veganism!

Even better, it's delicious! The chocolate is rich and creamy.

I'm a fan of dark chocolate, but this bar will be adored by even milk chocolate purists. The coconut milk powder gives it the creaminess that dairy gives milk chocolate and makes it milder than traditional dark chocolate.

You still get all the benefits of dark chocolate, however, from the high cacao content and the unprocessed cacao!

Sundance Bars is also an Etsy small business, which means that not only does ordering a delicious chocolate bar taste good, but it does good. Each purchase supports a chocolate artisan following his dreams!

Whatever your New Year's resolutions may be (or if you're doing resolutions this year at all) these bars are a great way to do good for your body and your community at the same time. As an artist myself (albeit a writer), I'm all for supporting all sorts of artists and small business. Let's keep the entrepreneurial spirit alive in the world for all, by supporting small businesses over mega-companies whenever we can!

How often do you shop from small businesses?

What's your job?

What are your New Year's Resolutions? Are you doing resolutions this year?

Recipe: Caribbean Coconut Bread

There are so many wonderful reasons to eat coconut oil - it has been proven to improve cholesterol profiles, may reduce heart disease risk, is great for your hair and skin health, may help reduce dangerous abdominal fat, and an improve immunity.

A quick bread baked with Ojio raw organic coconut oil as the fat, instead of butter or traditional vegetable oil, makes a wonderful switch-up from the traditional banana bread!

We're all getting back into the swing of things at work now, after the lovely Christmas holiday break, and sometimes this time of year can give us a bit of the post-vacation blues. While this bread is not quite as good as a Caribbean vacation (who wouldn't love to go to the Bahamas?) it tastes like the bakery-fresh coconut loaves you could find all over by the beaches!!

Read on for the recipe for my Caribbean Coconut Bread, made with healthy fat-rich coconut oil!

Review and Giveaway(!) : My Favorite Indulgence

I love breakfast and it's so important! Especially before a crazy day (as today will be for those who partake in the Black Friday shopping frenzy) or after a very indulgent day (as yesterday likely was for many of us), it's important to eat a healthy, balanced breakfast with whole grains for energy and fiber to keep us satisfied all day long.

Luckily, a healthy breakfast can also be a delicious breakfast!

My go-to for breakfast all week has been My Favorite Indulgence, a breakfast choice that's both deliciously indulgent (it lives up to its name) and delightfully healthy.

Read on to learn more about the granolas and to find out how you can enter to win the four granolas pictured above!

Recipe: Garden Pesto Salmon Sandwich

Love fish and love fish night, but don't love the high cost of a restaurant date out at an overpriced seafood place? There's no need anymore, because now you can get the same great quality at home with BumbleBee SuperFresh®, for a lovely date in or a lovely picnic date out, enjoying the beauty of fall! BumbleBee SuperFresh® is a complete line of naturally-seasoned, restaurant quality, “fish-forward” prepared seafood solutions for the home. It raises the bar for what seafood lovers can expect from frozen food!

In NYC, there are plenty of great 'event' dates - museums, shows, theater, and so much more! But I find that some of my favorite dates (and my favorite days) are when we keep it simple.

Don't get me wrong, going out in the city is a blast! I saw the Lion King on Broadway a few winters ago and still remember it as an amazing experience. But that's the sort of special occasion thing that's a wonderful treat for now and then, but a bit excessive on a weekly basis (unless you happen to get free Broadway tickets and are dating a dramaturg).

For the more regular date, I prefer going on strolls, having a nice homemade picnic, watching a movie, and just generally enjoying free time and the beautiful fall weather with great company! One of my favorites is having a casual lunch and then going to the roof of the Met (Met admission is free/pay as much as you want) to look out over beautiful Central Park and chat!

Let's not lie, we all love a good PB&J on a picnic or for lunch. I'm a young adult, however, and date young adult guys who have a bit more of an appetite and maybe a bit higher of a protein need at lunch (especially if I'm going to drag him all across Central Park to puppy-watch and visit the reservoir) than a single PB&J will satisfy.

Instead of going through a loaf of bread's worth of PB&Js for a lunch date and leaving my date feeling like our casual lunch is a real downgrade from a restaurant, I like making a hot sandwich for lunch that's still quick, easy, and affordable, but has a more grown-up and gourmet feel (and is more satisfying) than a PB&J!

Try my Garden Pesto Salmon Sandwich, featuring restaurant-quality BumbleBee SuperFresh® Salmon with Garden Pesto, for your next lunch date in. BumbleBee SuperFresh® Salmon with Garden Pesto is wonderfully flavorful and has no preservatives and has all natural ingredients, so you can enjoy great taste with great nutrition!

If you have more lunch dates like this and a few less in restaurants, you'll not only find that you and your date are both enjoying healthier lunches (and the many health benefits of salmon!) but that the money you'll save on eating out will add up to a Lion King on Broadway (or Radio City Christmas Spectacular - it's on my bucket list for one of these years) date without sacrificing any enjoyment!

Read on for the quick and easy recipe. There are only ~5 minutes of prep and it takes only ~25 minutes total to make, from start to finish, including the salmon baking time!

Review: Mamma Chia Organic Chia Granola Clusters and Organic Chia Vitality Bars!

Let me introduce you to my new favorite snack foods.

Mamma Chia Organic Vitality Bars and Organic Chia Granola Clusters are so deliciously fantastic.

They're both packed with heart healthy chia seeds, healthy fats, and plant-based protein. They're also all organic, gluten-free, and made with 100% whole grains in the case of the granola (the bars aren't grain-based).

Want omega-3 fatty acids (a whopping 1000mg of them) in a sweet, chocolatey, delicious and portable snack? Mamma Chia Vitality Bars have you covered!

They come in four great flavors, each as delicious as the next.

While my favorite (by a narrow margin) were the Blueberry & Dark Chocolate Vitality bars, every single flavor was amazing.

Cherry & Dark Chocolate was a close second favorite. The sweet tart cherries worked amazingly well with the chocolate and nuts!

I loved that the bars were healthy, a great snacking size, made with all natural ingredients in relatively unprocessed forms (I could still tell what the nuts and seeds and dried fruits making up the bars were), and that they were coated in chocolate, making them taste much more like indulgent chocolate bars than a healthy snack!

And yet they are a healthy snack with the omega-3 fatty acids you need to keep your brain and heart in tip-top shape. Hooray!

I could rave about the bars all day, but I also want to get to the granola.

Oh. My. Goodness.

Mamma Chia granola won a place among my favorite cereals of all time from the first bite.

It's sweet, it's crunchy, it's hearty, and there are big chunks of granola for from-the-bag snacking as well as smaller pieces for a more cereal-like experience.

How do I love soy-free, dairy-free, gluten-free 100% whole grain Mamma Chia Vitality Granola? Let me list the ways.

With milk, with yogurt, from the bag, on a smoothie, on an acai bowl, from the bag, on ice cream, with peanut butter and banana, in trail mix, and straight from the bag.

I may have mentioned that last way a few times, but it's because the granola is just that good. It tastes great with everything, but it really doesn't need anything to make it delicious!

Oh, and did I mention it's non-GMO, too? Trust me, you'll want to try this granola - any of the delicious flavors will do. You can thank me later!

What is your favorite way to eat granola?

What kind of snack bars do you like most often?

What snacks do you keep in your handbag/backpack/coat pocket?
Is that last one just me?

Review: The Bliss Bar

If you've been reading the blog for a while (thank you!) you know that I am and always have been a big fan of food bars.

They're sweet, energy-sense, convenient, (can be) healthy, and super portable. What's not to love?

Unfortunately, you'd be surprised by how many food bars are hiding mile-long ingredients lists of less-than-healthy ingredients to lend them their candy bar-Raquel flavors and textures.

That's why it's a real treat to discover a new energy bar that's plantbased with a simple ingredients list, just healthy fats, and minimal added sugars.

The Bliss Bar fits the bill perfectly!

The Bliss Bar comes in five delicious flavors, three of which (my favorite three, of course) are chocolatey through-and-through!

Among the three chocolatey flavors (Amazon Chocolate, Chia Mulberry, and Chocolate Goji) I honestly can't pick a favorite. They're all delicious and the dense, sweet, disk-shaped bars taste like super fudgy brownies. But they come with a boost of natural energy, instead of a weighed down icky stomach feeling.

Just look at that! They're minimally processed and you can tell, because you can still see the nutritious dried fruits, seeds, and chopped nuts they're made with.

The bars are true to their slogan (superfoods that taste like dessert)! Even the Honey Gold and Coconut Goji, which are based around other scrumptious flavors instead of chocolate, are really yummy.

And they're all made with just a few healthy, organic ingredients - plus love & light!

Love & light, ingredients featured in every flavor of Bliss Bar, must be the secret behind the bars' great flavor and excellent nutritional profiles.

Whatever the secret is, I hope they never change it! I have a new favorite bar!

Review: Sinless Raw Chocolate

I love dark chocolate.

In most cases, I'm a fan of the-darker-the-better and tend to enjoy 99% dark chocolate bars or even Ghiradelli's 100% baking bar. Dark chocolate is rich, creamy, satisfying, and can even be quite good for you!

Here is a quick list of some of the health benefits of dark chocolate:

* Naturally  high in antioxidants
* May lower risk of heart disease
* May help control insulin sensitivity
* May help against headaches

That last one really works for me! Sometimes a square of really dark chocolate (perhaps the caffeine in it?) can alleviate a headache for me. If your problems are more digestive, it's worth noting that dark chocolate was used to treat diarrhea in the 16th century - and recent studies suggest that there may actually be something there!

Since dark chocolate is high in fat, you don't want to overdo it or you might face some stomach upset just from that. But another great thing about dark chocolate is that since it is so intensely flavorful, you really don't need very much to satisfy a craving.

While I often choose plain dark chocolate because I can get darker chocolate that way, I also love dark chocolate with other flavors (like nuts, berries, etc.). I was excited to discover a new brand of healthy dark chocolate with high cacao content (85%) and some great flavors.

Sinless Raw Chocolate is raw, vegan, sugar-free, paleo, and sweetened naturally with erythritol. And did you ever think you could possibly get in your greens by eating yummy dark chocolate? Now you can!

True to its name, Sinless Raw Chocolate really is a healthy indulgence. It has raw organic greens hidden in its tasty chocolate! I swear you can't taste it at all, I was surprised when I saw it on the ingredients list!

Healthy Beauty: Five Foods for Beautiful Skin!

We have all heard the saying that beauty comes from the inside. The saying is true, of course, in the intended sense - a beautiful, good soul is so much more attractive than any aesthetically pleasing combination of physical features.

But it's also true in the cheeky sense that a beautiful outside, at least one that stays beautiful over time, requires a healthy inside!

In addition to staying hydrated, sleeping well, and leading a generally healthy lifestyle, here are five of my favorite healthy skin foods to keep my skin healthy and glowing!

Healthy Habits with Farmivore

I love smoothies! They're delicious, packed with healthy fruits (and potentially veggies), convenient if you need a snack or light meal on the go, great at any time of the day, easy to digest, and a perfect way to cool off on a hot day or hydrate on a day where you've been less diligent with water consumption than ideal.

I love adding spinach to a fruity, banana-based smoothie for a delicious, easy way to get in my daily greens!

Smoothies can also be a component of one of my favorite new 'trendy' foods:

Smoothie bowls! I love them, especially acai and pitaya bowls. I had my first bowl in Hawaii and while the ones I make at home (see above) are nowhere near as amazing as those were, they're still delicious! I'm working on it.

One of the biggest challenges I face in smoothie making is the same as I do in cooking and baking in general. As a single girl, it can be hard to buy produce in amounts that you'll use before they go off if you want a lot of variety. I don't like wasting food, so I'm more likely to sacrifice variety in order to buy just what I can use, than to buy a big range of fruits and veggies at once so that i can experiment with smoothie flavors.

Fortunately, I don't have to decide anymore! I recently discovered Farmivore, a delivery service that provides you with fresh smoothie ingredients straight to your front door in portions that are practical!
