Style Post: Fall Fashion

It's finally fall! I love the crisp morning air, the leaves changing colors and tumbling down around me, and pumpkin spice everything. Also the fashion!

Fall Fashion: Boho Chic Dresses in Autumn

Pretty girl fall fashion

There's something about the beginning of a new season that feels so magical. It makes me feel so alive and so blessed to get to live in this beautiful world.

Beautiful smiling girl dancing

It's all the better frolicking through Cambridge in a floaty dress, the sort of dress that will be totally weather inappropriate just a few degrees (or 1 or 2 weeks) from now!

Style Post: Summer Special Occasions

Winter is full of fun dress up events, from work holiday parties to New Year's Eve celebrations. But summer can be just as fun for those of us who love dressing up!

While summer has holiday galas, summer has weddings, baby showers, and soirees galore! I love this elegant, but summery, dress from ASOS for any of the above except weddings.

Don't wear white to a wedding and most certainly not an all white dress! If you're not going to a wedding, however, summer is the perfect time to dress up in white. I'm not sure what it is, but I love white dresses!

I think they just feel so much lighter and floater and twirlier (we'll pretend that's a word).

Another advantage of choosing an all-white dress for your event is that you can add a pop of color with fun accessories and don't have to worry about clashing colors or having too much going on at once. Though I'm a big fan of pink, I tend to favor a pop of classic blue or red for my accessory color accent!

As is often the case, a little goes a long way. With the embellished bodice of this dress, just the blue earrings and simple eyeliner is enough to finish the look. I'm not big on going overboard with the jewelry or makeup, especially not in the summer! It just weighs your airy summer look down.

Style Post: Seeing Stars

Do you remember that cute eShakti coat I posted about last year? eShakti doesn't just make custom fit and super chic outerwear. They also make really cute customized dresses!

I liked the original version of this dress when I saw it on their website, but it was still pretty chilly in NYC, so I swapped to long from short sleeves.

I also swapped the scoop neck for a high neck, because I think they look so nice on mini dresses.

I love that you can start with a design that you like and adjust it to get exactly the dress that you want!

The dresses can also be customized for skirt length, so you can go mini, midi, or maxi, depending on your preferences.

Style: Florals and Fitting Out

Fashion isn't just about clothing. I'm not an egg short of a full carton, I just mean that while clothing is, of course, part of fashion, you're not done once you've picked out the clothes for your outfit.

In other words, clothing is necessary for great style, but not sufficient. Accessories finish a look

Accessories are all too often overlooked because, unlike pants, no one is going to raise an eyebrow if you forget them. You'll feel under-dressed if you forget to put on a shirt one day, but the same usually doesn't apply for a bracelet.

But, like lingerie, your accessories can change how you feel in your outfit and throughout your day.

It's great when other people appreciate our style, but most important is that we appreciate our own style and that it makes us feel good and comfortable in our own skin.

Style Post: Springing Towards Summer

The temperatures are warming up and our wardrobes are switching from wintertime drab to springy fun! I love dresses and I love feeling free and light, with swishy skirts for twirling and bare arms for cartwheeling.

I'm spending this summer in Boston and I can't wait! I had a trip out to Boston a week ago for a fun shoot and we stumbled upon this fun hot pink scaffolding in Chinatown. It was the cutest scaffolding I've ever seen in my life and paired wonderfully with this gingham and daisy dress from ASOS!

With a bright, happy welcome like that, I can't wait to return to Boston in just a few short weeks and make it, once again, my warm weather home!

Summer Style Essentials: The Weekend Getaway Shortlist

Summer is here!

I know, I know, you know. It's not news anymore. But summer just requires that sort of enthusiastic announcement of its presence.

One of my favorite things to do in summer is to travel. Beach trips are especially great in summer, because the heat can be so stifling that there's nothing quite like a nice long soak in the ocean to cool you off.

Summer travel is all about fun and spontaneity, though, so you don't want to be bogged down with loads of luggage - that's especially bothersome if you're just taking a quick daytrip or weekend getaway. Skip overpacking and stick to the style essentials!

To get you started, here's a list of five of my summer style essentials for any destination.

Why Undergarments Complete A Look

When we talk about perfecting a look, we tend to talk about things like the right shoe pairing, the right accessories, the right makeup, etc.

Often we neglect the most fundamental of things - no matter how great your outfit is, it's not going to be amazing if your undergarments aren't up-to-par! Undergarments are what take a good outfit to the next level - the Super-good level.

Since just wearing a superhero outfit isn't all that socially acceptable in most parts of the western world.
'But no one sees my undergarments - why do they matter?' That's a rookie mistake. There are so, so many reasons why undergarments are arguably one of the most important components of a great outfit!

My Style: Sweet Simplicity

I did a lovely shoot with Boston-based makeup artist Maria Cristina Ochoa a few months ago and, as I hadn't shared the photos here yet, decided that I ought to share some of my favorites.

I love the simple, clean look and the contouring of the makeup and the lighting!

Also, notice how I'm rocking one of the trends I pointed out earlier? I was never a fan of mesh in clothing, but this Urban Outfitters top has me sold!

I think the key is to keep the rest of the look fairly elegant and to keep the mesh minimal, in order to stay chic (not trashy).

Like the look? Tweet it!

Summer Party Fashion!

There are those distinct moments when you realize that you're growing up. The milestones vary between individuals, but common ones include the first time you drive a car all by yourself, your first night in your own apartment, voting for the first time (and I hope you do vote!), etc.

I had another milestone last week - the first of my friends got married last weekend! In my mind, she's still the little girl with the awesome Lego set and the short hair.

Anyway, before this becomes all mushy-gushy-sentimental, here's a recap of my wedding party outfit.

All I can say is: SHOES.

What were some big 'whoa, I'm a grown-up' moments for you?

What's your favorite part of an outfit (shoes, top, skirt, etc.)?

What's the first piece you pick in an outfit?

The Snarky Stylist Steps In: Studded Shorts

Possibly due, at least in part, to the punk-rock fashion leanings of celebrities like Rihanna and Miley Cyrus, studs are appearing on everything. Studded shoes, bracelets, and so on have been popular for a while, but designers aren't stopping there.

Studs + summer = studded shorts!

It's really not as intimidating a fashion trend as it might appear to be and it's not as hard to pull off, either!

Here's an example of a cute way to wear studded shorts.

Anyone can wear them, you don't have to be a punk rocker or look like the kid you cross the street to avoid!

Can you tell that I love stacked bracelets? They're in most of my outfit combos!

Also, those shoes? So adorable.

Do you have studded shorts?

Would you wear studded shorts?

What trend do you hope will happen next?

Snarky Stylist: Sweet Summer Look!

It's approximately mid-summer (at least for those of us who count seasons by academic breaks) and the perfect time to asses whether you're getting everything out of your summer that you want.

But it's also Saturday - so use at least part of the day to relax and enjoy a DIY pedicure and fun summer fashion!

I think that should be on everyone's summer to-do list, anyway.

The Snarky Stylist Steps In: Heels

Have you ever seen an accessory that's just so extreme that you wonder what sort of outfit could possibly go with it?

I feel that way all the time, whenever I see a pair of really intense heels. You know the sort - the kind of platform pumps that Charlotte Russe seems to specialize in.

Charlotte Russe's heels aren't all that tacky or stripper-esque, thank goodness, but you get the gist (that pair isn't actually from Charlotte Russe, but I linked to a pair of theirs above and the heels in the outfit I created, below, are from Charlotte Russe).

How do you wear platform pumps without being offered twenties on the street corner?

Answer: It's tricky, but definitely possible.

The key is to go classy with the rest of your outfit and not to choose a skirt that's too short. Don't go overboard on make up and don't show cleavage!

Period. No cleavage. I don't care if you're wearing slacks, cleavage takes the look over into the trashy zone.

Luckily for me, this isn't really an issue for me. I can't walk in shoes like that.

What's the highest pair of heels you own?

Do you like platform pumps?

Where is your favorite place to buy shoes?

The Snarky Stylist Steps In: LSAT Fashion

I'm taking the LSAT today! Is anyone else taking it, too?

Despite my peppy punctuation,  I'm not as enthusiastic as I might seem. It's a loooooong test and I prefer shorter tests.

Or no tests. No tests is best.

Still, what must be done will be done - and then it will be over! Other than preparing (I didn't really), sleeping well and eating well, dressing for the occasion is another way to make the testing process as painless as possible.

I personally prefer wearing pants of some sort on exam days, rather than skirts, because then I can sit however I want without any worry about my decency. Alternately, I like loose dresses with longer skirts.

What I do not like is anything tight - I don't want to feel my clothing or think about it when I'm supposed to be kicking an exam's butt! That's what I really like about these pants. Yes, the baggy crotch (aka: full diaper) pants are a bit of a daring style, but you can definitely get away with it in an exam.

I can even show up to an exam in sweat pants. First and foremost, exam fashion is about comfort. Style can wait for the post-exam celebration! I like this tank, because it reminds us that fun times are ahead. Same with the glitter nails and the fun accessories - those little things can help (or at least not hurt) with some of the testing anxiety.

If you're testing today, too, good luck!

What's the biggest test you've ever taken?

Have you ever taken the LSAT, GMAT, or MCAT?

What do you wear to exams?
