More Delicious Mornings with Erin Baker's: A Review

I love getting mail. I also love breakfast foods and mornings. So getting this in the mail was wonderful!

Erin Bakers New Products Review

Erin Baker's focuses on making delicious foods out of whole grains and without preservatives. Whether they're eaten as a standalone snack or part of your breakfast, they're food that nourishes you and fuels you for a great day ahead.

The two new products I got to try were The Original Breakfast Cookies Minis:

Healthy Breakfast Cookies

They taste just like the full size cookies - hearty, just the right amount of sweet, and always fresh (never stale) but they're a smaller size that's great for crumbling over yogurt or oatmeal or slipping into a lunchbox as a sweet, but nutritious, snack.

Review: Wink Dessert Dark Chocolate

There's a new flavor of Wink Frozen Desserts

It's Dark Chocolate (aka the best thing ever) and, like all other flavors of Wink Frozen Desserts, is a gluten-free, nut-free, egg-free, dairy-free, soy-free, non-GMO vegan substitute for traditional ice cream.

Low Calorie Vegan Ice Cream

Whether you have an allergy, a plantbased diet, lactose intolerance (guilty), or a diet, Wink's Dark Chocolate Frozen Dessert works for you.

Vegan Ice Cream Review

And it's sugar-free, too, for diabetics and health-conscious ice cream lovers alike!

But how does it taste?

Wink Dessert Dark Chocolate Review

I'm all about honesty in my reviews, so I'll tell you right off the bat that it has a much icier consistency than dairy- or most coconut- or soy-based ice creams. Think more along the lines of Italian ice, though not quite.

Wink Dessert Dark Chocolate

If you let it thaw for a few moments, it scoops pretty well.

Vegan Ice Cream Review

The chocolate flavor isn't as intense as I'd expect for dark chocolate, as you're probably not surprised to hear, given the relatively light brown color.

Wink Dessert Dark Chocolate Ice Cream

That said, it is sweet, without a weird artificial sweetener aftertaste, and it is chocolatey.

Allergy Friendly Desserts

Especially if you're planning to make an ice cream sundae or ice cream sandwich out of it, or top it with syrup or other toppings, I seriously doubt you'll miss anything over the sugar, fat, and dairy packed traditional alternative.

Dark Chocolate Vegan Ice Cream

If you don't have allergies or intolerances, normal ice cream can fit into a healthy diet as an occassional treat. For something sweet and cold for every day, or that you can eat a pint of without feeling bad, however, this is a great option!

What's your favorite ice cream brand?

What's your favorite ice cream flavor? It's probably cookies and cream or southern praline for me!

What do you look for in an  ice cream? Creaminess, lightness, and lots of mix-ins.

December Degustabox Review

Once again, I can't believe it's already a new month - but I'm thrilled, because it's my favorite month! Christmas is my absolute favorite holiday and so all of December and the holiday season is my favorite time.

Everyone is cheerful and tries a bit harder to be kind. The streets twinkle with bright lights and cheerful decorations. And the air is full of the intoxicating scent of holiday flavors!

I can't wait to get started on my annual Christmastime baking madness, but in the interim, I was really excited to open this month's Degustabox. If you've been reading my blog for a while, you know Degustabox is a subscription service that delivers a big box full of full-sized new foods (10-15 of them) to its subscribers. I was hoping for a box full of Christmas-themed and holiday-flavored delights, plus a few things to cook holiday dinner party entrees and sides with or bake Christmas cookies with!

Here's what I found in the box:

December Degustabox Unboxing

To start, there were no overtly Christmassy products. That was a tiny bit disappointing for me, because I love Advent Calendars, Spekulatias cookies, holiday spiced things, and dark chocolate peppermint bark. But it was probably a decision on their part to honor that not all their customers celebrate Christmas and I respect that. Especially since the products they included can all definitely be used for Christmassy things!

To start:

Wise White Cheddar Popcorn is gluten free, whole grain, air popped, and a smart snacking choice for holiday parties! The season is full of holiday parties and snacks are a must, but it's nice to keep them on the healthier side, so that we don't get sluggish and bloated as the season progresses. These are a happy medium between carrot sticks and greasy chips!

No holiday season is complete without baking, but not everyone is a baker.

These Pillsbury mixes are easy enough for everyone and I like that they're a little more natural - no colors, preservatives, or artificial flavors! That doesn't mean, of course, that buttercream frosted white cake is healthy, but it can be part of a healthy diet.

It's great that you can use them to make cupcakes, too. It's perfect for non-bakers who want to bake something sweet to bring to a holiday party or the last day of school before break!

If you really can't be trusted in the kitchen (or don't have the time or desire to bake) you're also covered.

Chips Ahoy! Cinnamon Sugar Thins are a new crunchy cookie from our long-beloved Chips Ahoy! They're cinnamony, with delicious white chocolate chips studding them throughout, and are a great thing to bring along to a holiday party. Perfect for when you're invited to a holiday party at the last minute!

If your crowd isn't into sweets, try these whole grain crackers:

Good Thins Oat & Flax are natural crackers where whole grains are the first ingredient! They're low in sugar, free of partially hydrogenated oils (surprisingly common in salty snacks) and free of high fructose corn syrup and artificial colors and flavors.

Top them with peanut butter and a chocolate kiss, cream cheese with cranberry jam, hard cheese and cucumber, etc. for an easy party snack. They're also great plain!

If you're looking for a jam for your crackers, look no further.

Smucker's new Fruit & Honey jams, which feature fruit sweetened naturally with honey, are another delicious inclusion in this month's Degustabox. The Strawberry Jalapeno jam is delicious and I love the spicy kick!

I also love that they're sweetened with honey instead of sugar and colored with vegetable juice instead of artificial dyes.

When you're out and about, buying Christmas presents, you'll need some sustenance.

Kala Beans are high in protein - they're roasted fava beans with seasoning and they're delicious!

The Kala Beans are my hands-down favorite in this month's Degustabox.

Speaking of holiday gifts, the Loacker cookies make great gifts for foodies!

That is, if you can bear to part with them. The Coconut flavor is my favorite - creamy milk chocolate and a rich coconut filling layered with crispy cookies!

But what if all the parties, overlapping with the seasonal stress and the fact that it's flu season, end with you in bed with a sore throat?

Ricola lozenges are my favorite when I'm feeling off. I love that they're natural, I love their less-medicinal taste, and I love that these honey herb lozenges do more than just fight your current sore throat - they also support your immune system and help fight against fatigue, so you feel better going forward. It's the perfect offense and defense pairing!

I also always love honey when I'm under the weather.

Honey Acres Honey Straws come in more flavors than I knew honey could come in! I love that they're easy and clean to open - just pinch and pop, no smeary, sticky lids - and perfectly portioned for a sweet pick-me-up or to squeeze into a cup of tea!

And finally, because girl can't live on sweets and holiday cheer alone, there's an Urbane Grain Ancient Grain Blend ready-cup in every Degustabox this month!

I got Beef Burgundy, which is a three-minute pasta and protein meal that you can prepare in just three minutes with a microwave. So easy and convenient!

What are your favorite holiday treats?

What are you looking forward to the most this holiday season?

October Degustabox Unboxing

Did you see my September Degustabox Unboxing?

It's a new month - how is it already October 2016?? - and with a new month comes a new Degustabox! To refresh, Degustabox is a monthly subscription service that delivers a big box full of full-sized foodie finds (10-15 of them!) to subscribers every month.

I love getting mail, trying new things, and good food. It's perfect!

I love that every box comes with a greeting sheet telling me a bit more about all the products in the box on one side and offering up some relevant recipes on the other side.

There are typically also some coupons in the mix, to help you save money if you like any of the products so much that you want to buy more. Yay for coupons! My mom instilled a great appreciation for coupons in me - sometimes we'd get an entire grocery cart full of food for like $7 and it always felt so amusingly satisfying.

Anyway, on to the actual food! We'll start with the food that accompanied the two recipes included in this box:

Healthy Pasta Dish

Barilla is my go-to brand for pasta (check out my mac & cheese recipe) and as a carb-loving vegetarian, I was thrilled to see that I could get 17g of protein and a good dose of ALA Omega-3 fatty acids from eating my pasta, with their new high-protein multigrain pasta.

Review: Paleo Scavenger Granola

Granola is my absolute favorite sort of cereal. Nuts are my favorite crunchy snack. So a granola made almost entirely out of nuts sounded delicious!

It didn't disappoint. Paleo Scavenger Granolas are handcrafted in Chicago and, as the name suggests, completely grain-free, gluten-free, and paleo-friendly.

Instead of the usual grains, these granolas are made of healthy nuts, like almonds, walnuts, and coconut, as well as dried fruit and natural sweeteners, like honey and maple syrup!

Healthy fats are so important for healthy skin and hair! Paleo Scavenger granolas are a much better choice than many other commercial granolas, which can often be packed with processed sugars and sometimes even trans fats. I would much rather have a breakfast or snack that keeps my skin soft and glowing and my hair shiny and healthy!

They're also all delicious! They're not what I would first think of when I think of granola and they do taste different than other granolas, so I would say they're somewhere between granola and trail mix.

Spring Flavors: Honey Ridge Farms Artisan Honeys!

Springtime makes me think of flowers, sunshine, twirly dresses, my birthday, and the sticky fingers of childhood. I'm not sure what it is about honey (perhaps the association with bees and flowers and all things happy and sweet?) but honey is such a spring food to me!

I recently tried two new flavors, Honey Creme Coconut and Honey Creme Lavender, from Honey Ridge Farms!

While liquid honey is great for sweetening tea, I prefer honey cremes as a topping on toast for a peanut butter and honey sandwich (or on cream cheese, as in the photo above). It's a lot less messy (making it much more suitable for the adult, less sticky me), spreads easily, and just looks really nice - like spreading gold quartz on bread. Yum!

Review: BRAMI Beans

Do you know what the most protein-packed bean out there is? Hint: it's not a black bean. It's not kidney bean. It's not a garbanzo bean.

It's a lupini bean!

Have you heard of lupini beans? Unless you're from the Mediterranean, or familiar with Mediterranean cuisine, it's quite likely that you haven't. I hadn't!

Lupini beans are the most protein packed bean in the world and a snack favorite of Roman warriors. They're rich in fiber, as well, so an all around great snack!

Four Fun February Foods

Trying new things is always so fun! It's no secret that I love to cook and bake and generally play with food in the hopes that something awesome (and edible) happens. Here are four fun February foods that I'm trying this month!

Since Valentine's Day is tomorrow, don't worry - if you're super behind this year, it's not too late to retreat to the kitchen, cover things in flour, and emerge with a sure-to-please food gift for your special someone!

I give these toasted coconut and cherry hand pies a glowing recommendation.

They're really cute, super festive, taste great, and make a beautiful gift. If you follow Kim's recipe exactly, they're also pretty quick and easy to make! I like to make my own pie crust so that the whole recipe is from scratch, but that's the only thing that I did differently.

Read on for more great gifts, festive foods, and even something for those who like to avoid all things Valentine's Day!

Review: Bulu Box

Subscription box services make a great gift (Valentine's Day, anyone?) because they're a fun gift that your loved ones will enjoy for months to come. Every time a box arrives in the mail, they get to think of you and smile!

In addition to that, there are lots of specialized subscription services, so you can find the perfect thing for your loved one. They'll get to try lots of new products related to their interests and get a new gift every month. That's pretty great!

I recently tried a Bulu Box. The experience starts with an excitingly decorated orange box. It's so stimulating! So inspiring! So exclamatory!

I think it's the all-caps. And that it reads like a slightly over-caffeinated fitness trainer. If Jillian Michaels were a cardboard box...

Happy National Green Juice Day!

Aren't national food days so fun? There's National Peanut Butter Day, National Sandwich Day, National Ice Cream Day and, today, National Green Juice Day!

Late January is a great time to have a national food holiday dedicated to healthier eating. A lot of us go into the new year with the intention to eat good food, do good things, and build a good life. But while all of that can become habitual over time, it can also be pretty easy to let life get in the way as we settle back into our usual routines.

Luckily, this National Green Juice Day we are all reminded that wellness isn't incompatible with having busy lives or not wanting to spend all afternoon cleaning pulp out of a juicer.

There are so many great commercial green juices out there for those of us who would rather get up early for yoga before work than get up early to press juice out of greens. It's all about picking the right juice!

Review: Elli Quark (a.k.a. A Reunion with a Childhood Love)

Growing up as a half-German girl living in North Carolina, I loved having the best of both worlds:

Cool German summers and temperate winters in the American South.

German sweet treats, like Kinderschokolade and Nutella, and American peanut butter and trail mix.

German Weihnachtsmaerkte and American Halloween.

German linguistic freedom (anyone can build a word!) and uncomplicated English grammar.

Long American summer vacations and school to attend in Germany during those long summer breaks.

Rustic German breads and neon-colored American ketchup to amuse my German cousins with.

As the increasing global market brought more and more of my German favorites to me in the USA (I still fondly remember the year that Target brought Nutella in America to me - even if German Nutella tastes way better) the things that I couldn't get here stood out more and more. Key among them: quark.

Creamy Elli Quark
A soft cheese that is both low in lactose and fat, as well as high in protein and creaminess, quark was dairy that I could digest and I LOVED it. I still do! But it was, sadly, impossible to find in even international markets in the USA. Until now!

Review: Sundance Bars

Was eating more plantbased foods or less added sugar one of your New Year's Resolutions? Don't worry, you don't have to give up chocolate - not even milk chocolate!

Sundance Bars are made of organic raw ground cacao nibs, organic raw cacao butter, coconut milk powder, organic raw coconut oil, erythritol, steviol, nut butter, lemon or lime juice, and cayenne pepper - that's it!

With no added sugar, antioxidants from the cacao, and healthy fats from the coconut oil, it's chocolate that's healthful and can easily fit into any healthy balanced diet, even if you have dietary restrictions like veganism or raw veganism!

Even better, it's delicious! The chocolate is rich and creamy.

I'm a fan of dark chocolate, but this bar will be adored by even milk chocolate purists. The coconut milk powder gives it the creaminess that dairy gives milk chocolate and makes it milder than traditional dark chocolate.

You still get all the benefits of dark chocolate, however, from the high cacao content and the unprocessed cacao!

Sundance Bars is also an Etsy small business, which means that not only does ordering a delicious chocolate bar taste good, but it does good. Each purchase supports a chocolate artisan following his dreams!

Whatever your New Year's resolutions may be (or if you're doing resolutions this year at all) these bars are a great way to do good for your body and your community at the same time. As an artist myself (albeit a writer), I'm all for supporting all sorts of artists and small business. Let's keep the entrepreneurial spirit alive in the world for all, by supporting small businesses over mega-companies whenever we can!

How often do you shop from small businesses?

What's your job?

What are your New Year's Resolutions? Are you doing resolutions this year?

2016 Oriya Health Challenge!

Is anyone absolutely awful at writing the right date at the beginning of each new year? I still have to remind myself not to end dates with -15, because it's -16 now!

That said, I love the fresh new start of new years and the excitement that comes with it. If there's anything you've been procrastinating, the new year provides a perfect opportunity to stop putting it off and just do it already!

This year, I spent the holidays in Paris on a work trip. It was an unusual holiday for me, not just because of the unseasonably warm weather for the time of year (both in NYC and, to a lesser extent, in Paris), but also because it was my first time not spending the holidays with my family.

Follow me on Instagram as @danaikadzere for more travel, food, and life photos!
Paris has been amazing and I love my job, but I'm hoping to spend Christmas with my loved ones again next year - and I'm already wishing that next year will bring a white Christmas!

Anyway, I will bid the city of lights adieu this evening and fly back home to NYC late tonight. So, in a way, tomorrow (January 4) is my real new start to the new year! The trip has been great and wonderfully educational, but I'm also looking forward to being home and getting back into/creating a new year's new rhythm.

Review: Eating Evolved Chocolate

Merry Christmas!

Since many of us start the day dumping our favorite treats out of our Christmas stockings, it's the perfect day for a chocolate review!
Growing up half-German, good chocolate was treated as much as a staple food as bread. Eating Evolved Chocolate agrees!

A company that believes 'Chocolate is Food, Not Candy,' an assertion that's printed boldly inside their chocolate bar boxes, Eating Evolved creates all natural, paleo dark chocolate bars out of just a few simple, whole foods ingredients to keep the nutritional value of their huff-cocoa-content dark chocolate bars intact.

Once again, my belief that healthy is delicious is proved right!

The holiday season is my absolute favorite time of the year and the absolute best time to make special memories with friends and family and all your loved ones. I have family Christmas memories from over a decade ago that I still treasure more than anything else!

Being reunited with loved ones is such an amazing feeling!

That said, many of us can find that the holidays can get a bit hectic. That's no fun! It's all about striking the ideal balance between participating in the festivities and taking some much needed, and equally enjoyable.

Read on for my top seven tips for taking some precious 'me' time this holiday season!

Review: Pure7 Dark Chocolate

Chocolate is delicious and dark chocolate is the most delicious - as far as I'm concerned, the darker the better! Chocolate is an artisan food and there is a huge range in quality, taste, and nutrition from bar to bar, even within the same flavor or cocoa percentage.

Why waste precious time and stomach space eating subpar chocolate? High quality chocolate has the potential to be delicious, indulgent, packed with healthy cocoa flavanols, and an all-around positive addition to your diet!

I recently had the pleasure of trying fair-trade, organic, paleo Pure7 dark chocolate from artisan chocolatiers Julie MacQueen and Carrie Raho.

Like me, they believe that healthy can be delicious and craft all of their bars without the use of chemicals, dairy, soy, gluten, and refined sugars. All ingredients stay under 110F throughout the process, to keep all the essential nutrients intact!

Trying to cut back on refined sugars during the holidays, or at least keep an eye on your intake? All of the varieties of Pure7 dark chocolate (with the exception of the stevia bar) are sweetened with honey, instead of sugar!

Review: Nibble Chocolate

It's December, so I'm officially in all-Christmas, all-the-time mode! AKA I'm incredibly happy and loving my favorite month of the year.

Today I want to share a great stocking stuffer for your chocoholic, health-conscious, and/or foodie loved ones!

Nibble Chocolate is organic, made with just two ingredients (organic cocoa beans and organic cane sugar) and hand-crafted in San Diego California!

Forget about GMOs, artificial flavors, chemicals, or anything else that you wouldn't want in your chocolate (or your body). Nibble Chocolate proves you don't need any of that to make delicious chocolate!

Review (and a Recipe Round-Up!): Food to Live Goji Berries

I loved trying Food to Live's Medjool Dates a while back, so I was really excited to try their festively-colored little red goji berries, now that the holiday season is in full swing!

For those who missed my review of the dates, Food to Live creates certified organic dried fruit snacks featuring delightfully short ingredients lists of only one nutritious ingredient each. The goji berries followed that wonderful trend!

The berries are chewy, sweet, flavorful, and each one is the same exacting quality as the last - you won't find a dry berry in the bunch!

I love to eat the little red superfood berries plain, as part of a trail mix, sprinkled in a peanut butter and honey sandwich, mixed in with my yogurt, as a topping on my morning oats, or as a healthy 'sprinkle' on ice cream. Yum!

Read on for three more fun ways to enjoy the yummy goji berries!
