Review: One Bars

There are so many protein bars out there, with something for just about every flavor, texture, and consistency preference and just about every dietary need.

While protein bars can make a really convenient snack, since they're generally individually packaged, shelf stable for months or more, and not messy or smelly to eat, some protein bars can be loaded with up to 30g of sugar. I don't think I'm in the minority when I say that a protein bar should have more protein than it has sugar! And it should also have less sugar than a Snicker's bar. One Bars (formerly OhYeah! bars) have nutritional stats worthy of a protein bar - 20g of protein and only 1g of sugar per bar. That's great for keeping blood sugar levels even and energy levels steady!

They also come in a nice variety of different dessert-y flavors!

One Bar Review

The bars all taste quite different, but they all share some important similarities.

Review: No Cow

If you're at all into fitness and you've been anywhere near Instagram, you've seen the craze about Quest bars. Low carb, low sugar, high protein and high fiber, they're great - unfortunately, they're not vegan-friendly. If you're plantbased, or just trying to go dairy free, then they're just not an option, since they lean heavily on whey protein.

Bummer.

Luckily, there's a bar with as impressive stats as Quest bars and a much more natural (and plantbased) ingredients list!

No Cow Bar Review

No Cow bars started as D's Naturals quite some time ago, but have since expanded and reformulated their bars. While I enjoyed the original No Cow bars occasionally (and I really liked their nutritional stats and virtuous ingredients lists) they were a bit dry/crumbly tasting sometimes. The flavors were delicious, though, the textures could just use some work.

The new formula has taken care of that!

No Cow Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Bar Review

These bars are moist, flavorful, sweet (but naturally sweetened and still incredibly low in sugar), and while they're higher calorie than the original bars and now some of them contain palm oil, they're not more than comparative sized protein bars, both vegan and not.

Review: Bhu Fit Bars

As the temperatures rise and summer sets in, many of us find ourselves on the go much more than during the cooler months. Whether it's traveling or simply spending more time outside at parks, beaches, lakes, and so on, summertime is all about going out and having adventures!

Bhu Fit Bars  from Bhu Foods are the perfect grab-and-go choice for healthy snacking away from home. They're conveniently packaged, like traditional protein bars, and they're made of only healthy, whole foods. That's rare to find in a protein bar!

The bars are no-GMO, gluten-free, and full of healthy protein and digestion-regulating fiber. They're also wonderfully low in sugar, without relying on unhealthy chemical sweeteners, like sucralose.

They come in three main types, all of which are oh so delicious and oh so good for you!

There are the vegan bars, which are made with organic pea protein and come in three great flavors. Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip is my favorite, but Chocolate Tart Cherry Pistachio is delicious, too!

Bhu Fit Chocolate Tart Cherry Pistachio Vegan Bar
Many chocolate-flavored protein bars feature chocolate as the main flavor, but these bars have just a little bit of chocolate, so that the other flavors still shine, too. The bars have a chewy texture and aren't too big, but also not too small! They're perfectly snack-sized.

Review: Eat Me Guilt Free

Mondays are exciting.

No, really. I love the weekend just as much any other girl, but Mondays are exciting in their own right. You're coming fresh off the weekend into a whole new week to set and achieve new short goals and work on old long goals!

That said, 3pm on a Monday afternoon at the office can require a bit of a pick-me-up for most of us.

Eat Me Guilt Free blondies and brownies are the perfect solution to the afternoon energy crash.

They're yummy and do a much better of keeping energy levels up for the second half of the afternoon than a normal brownie or blondie would!

Loving Lately: New Finds

Can you believe it's already mid September? For those who are school-aged, or have a school-aged child, it's either back to school time or school is already in full swing! 2015 is flying!

I've been fortunate enough to be out of NYC for most of the summer, spending June in Boston and July in NYC, so I escaped the bulk of NYC's summer heat. I've definitely been feeling it this month though! Flying from Germany to NYC was an instant 20 degrees Celsius increase in temperature (that's over 60 degrees Fahrenheit) and the first few days were absolutely brutal!

24 Signs It's Too Hot In London Right Now

I eventually adjusted a bit, but I never really fully adjust to heat. I'm definitely more of a cold weather girl, so I'm ready for late September to bring the much needed relief of a cooler fall.

Anyway, with the start of fall here and the new seasons meaning lots of big changes for a lot of us (myself included - I'm not going back to school, but I'm taking a new step in my writing career and starting a new job as a children's entertainment writer for an animated television series in just a week!).

Before all the next new things begin, here are some of the latest new things that I have been enjoying!

Review: Nakd Bars

I love bars. They're convenient, (often) yummy, shelf-stable, backpack-friendly, TSA-approved, safe for sharing, and perfect for donation if you come upon a surprise food drive or a hungry person in need of help.

For those who follow non-traditional diets like the raw vegan diet or a gluten-free diet, however, it can be hard to find a yummy bar that fits into your diet! You'd be surprised by how many protein bars are not vegan (I was surprised) and if you're raw vegan it's a real rarity to stumble upon a bar that you can eat.

Nakd bars are a great bar option that are vegan, raw vegan, gluten-free, healthy, and well portioned for snacking.

Even those of us who don't follow those special diets will enjoy them! I did.
Nakd bars are from the UK, but readily available to healthy snackers in other countries, too, through an easy-to-use online ordering site.

The bars ship quickly and arrive in a cardboard box (within a larger mailing package with padding that perfectly protects the bars from breaking or getting smushed in shipping).

You can order an assortment of bars, like I tried, if you're new to Nakd bars and haven't chosen flavors yet.

First, your snack compliments you. Then you eat your snack and it's delicious. Then you have the energy from the healthy, natural snack and, in the long run, become more gorgeous (setting you up for the cycle of snack box compliments to continue) from the healthy fats of the nuts in the bars. Those healthy fats are great for your skin and your hair!

The cycle of happy Nakd bar snacking is the perfect snacking experience, really.

The bars come in a large assortment of scrumptious flavors, each more delicious than the next.

The bars all look more or less the same, except for different coloring between the flavors, but the flavors are diverse. The Caffe Mocha was one of my favorites - it was lightly chocolatey with a strong coffee flavor. Yum! It tasted like a candy bar.

Unlike a candy bar, however,  Nakd bars are made of just nuts, dried fruits, soy crunchies, fruit juice, and spices.

There's no added sugar, it's just solid plant-based nutrition!

Bars made of nuts and dried fruit bars are, by nature, rich and dense. A lot of fruit-and-nut bars are thus quite heavy for a light snack, especially for children. Nakd bars are portioned well for that little peckishness or for an on-the-go snack for kids. If you're hungrier, you can pack two!

*New* Detour Smart Bar Flavor Review - Chocolate Peanut Butter

(Wo)man can't live on Christmas cookies and candy canes alone! There's no need to try, it would be an existence filled with stomachaches and lagging energy.

Luckily, there's no need! Though most fruits and vegetables are (sadly) no longer in season, there are still frozen options and (though this is less environmentally friendly) fresh produce that's flown in from warmer parts of the globe.

There are also lots of yummy snack foods to keep on hand to fuel holiday gift shopping, holiday party throwing (and party hopping!), and general seasonal shenanigans.

Can there pretty please be unreasonable amounts of blizzards in NYC and (this one's really unlikely) Greensboro, NC this December? Just pack in all the precipitation of the year in frozen form and in this month and I'll be pleased.

It needs to be tall enough for me to hide behind, build fortresses in, and sneak attack innocent passerby (read: my poor family and friends) with snowballs. That's all!

Anyway, there are many healthy snack options to fuel all that fun. I recently tried a new one!

Remember when I reviewed Detour Smart bars when they first came on the market? They're Detour's gluten-free, all-natural protein bar option and previously were available in three flavors - apple cinnamonblueberry, and cranberry flax.

There's a new fourth flavor in time to make your holidays a little healthier (and more delicious) - Chocolate Peanut Butter Smart Bars!

Like the other Detour Smart Bars, they're gluten-free and made with whole grain oatmeal.

They're also wonderfully low in sugar, so they won't add to your eventual chocolate and cookies sugar crash! That's what I call balance.

When you hear how low in sugar they are (only 4 grams, the equivalent of one teaspoon, in a whole bar) you might be skeptical. After all, there's more sugar than that a cup of unsweetened plain yogurt!

There's no reason to be skeptical. The bars are sweetened naturally with stevia, which won't affect your blood sugar levels, but is also a natural plant extract and not a cancer-causing chemical or, like aspartame, known to induce migraines (ick). Stevia is pretty solid!

These bars are solid, too. They're definitely better for handling a peanut butter than a chocolate craving, as that's the main flavor in the bar (I would probably rename them Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, as I feel that's more accurate, if I were running things).

There are mini chocolate chips throughout the bar, but the base is definitely peanut butter. It's delicious, satisfying, sweet enough (but not cloyingly so), healthy, packed with 11g of vegetarian protein to sustain your energy levels until your next meal, and drizzled with Greek Yogurt icing for (a) prettiness and (b) a more treat-like experience.

I give them a thumbs up! They're definitely worth having on hand while you rush around this month.

What are your favorite on-the-go snacks during the holidays?

What's your favorite holiday treat?

Do you have a gift shopping strategy?

SquareBars Review

I love protein bars - they're convenient, often tasty (I have a total weakness for chocolate flavored ones), and provide muscle-fueling vegetarian protein!

For vegans, howver, there are far fewer good protein bar options. Most bars use whey protein, have milk in their chocolate coating, or both.

Luckily for vegans, there's a new all vegan protein bar that's been blowing up in popularity lately.

The icing on the cake (coating on the protein bar?) is that part of the profits from the purchase of Squarebars goes to a good cause!

2.5% of net sales of Squarebars go towards fighting human trafficking! Whoo!

And the bars come in three chocolatey flavors - Squarebars knows that chocolate is what we want, so chocolate is what we get. There's the classic Cocoa Crunch for purists.

Cocoa Almond for chocolate nut lovers.

...that would be me.

Last, but not least, there's Cocoa Coconut for Mounds candy bar fans who want the same taste with better nutrition.

The bars all have similar ingredients and nutritional stats. At a bit over 200 calories and 11g of protein each, they're a great snack to help get plant-based protein in.

And they're delicious. That's huge, because who would eat them if they weren't?

They're more like a chocolate/candy bar than a protein bar in taste and texture, but definitely more like a protein bar in nutrition.

I recommend them!

Have Your Cookies And Eat Them Too

Back to school is well underway - or rather, almost forgotten by now in face of the return of routine - and it's finally starting to feel like autumn.

There are lots of wonderful things about fall and winter and the advent of the holidays. But they aren't exactly known for helping with health goals! Spring and summer are all about eating right and getting fit, but fall and winter, with the holidays and colder weather, are more about comfort foods and coziness.

It's like:

But too much of that and you feel like:

After all, fall and winter encompass a lot of months.

I'm all about healthy being fun and more desirable (even purely on a hedonistic level) than unhealthy. So there's no reason not to indulge your cold weather cravings - but indulge it the healthy way most of the time!

Betsy's Best Bar None are a healthy alternative to your traditional cookie. Normal cookies are great for now and then, but these Whole Food Rounds are something you can enjoy daily without concern as a healthy source of energy - and protein!

Each cookie has 5g of protein and each packet has 2 cookies (so, let's be honest, that's the realistic serving). All that protein is vegan, paleo, organic, non-GMO, and filler-free.

It's also, as advertised, whole food protein and not protein from whey or soy isolates or pea proteins.

The nut-free and grain-free recipe is not only paleo-friendly but also perfect for allergen-free diets or schools with strict nut-free lunchbox rules.

They're certified vegan, gluten-free, 100% organic, certified kosher, and non-GMO. There's pretty much no healthy diet that these don't fit into!

There are six flavors (the sixth is Orange Poppy Seed) and I tried five of them.

The flavors are all inventive and delicious. I honestly enjoyed all of them, even the Lemon Coconut! Usually that type of flavor isn't my thing (I'm all about all chocolate everything for bars and cookies) but the dense texture made it work!

The chocolate flavors were, of course, my favorite.

Especially the dark chocolate because, well, dark chocolate.

As you can see, these aren't masquerading as a candy chocolatey treat - they do taste like healthy food and they aren't interchangeable with an Otis Spunkmeyer double dark chocolate muffin, but they're deliciously hearty with nice dark chocolate chips.

They taste good, they're good for you, and they're good for the community!

I find the story behind the cookies particularly fascinating and it's definitely another good reason (though the taste and nutrition are really enough) to buy these!

Betsy's Best Bar None was founded in 2011 in Portland, Oregon not just to create a healthy snack for people of all different dietary requirements to enjoy, but also to provide those transitioning out of the prison system with gainful employment. That's a hugely important part of breaking the cycle!

Do something for your health while helping others rebuild their lives! That's such a perfect double-win situation!

New Quest Bar Flavor - Cookies & Cream!

There's a new Quest Bar flavor! As you know, I love pretty much all other flavors that they have and every new bar that they come up with seems to be better than the one before!

Cookies & Cream is also one of the best flavors ever (it was my favorite ice cream flavor for over a decade and is still really high up on the list). So I was really excited when they announced that the new bar would be Cookies & Cream flavored!

These have actual big chunks of cream filling in them! They reminded me of the white chocolate chunks in the White Chocolate Raspberry Quest Bar.

So. Good.

There were also big chunks of chocolate cookie (think Oreos) as well as small crumbles throughout a bar base that tasted very vanilla-y.

It's amazing microwaved, but also just room temperature. It's hard to think of a tastier way to get protein (a whopping 21 grams - the bars aren't vegan, but vegetarians can rejoice)!

This is one of my favorite Quest Bars at the moment, right up there with their Double Chocolate Chunk bars (also pretty new!) and the Quest Cravings Peanut Butter Cups. Yum!

Let's hope they never stop their prolific output of new products - it seems to be at least two new high quality flavors a year! I really can't think of another company that has them matched on both variety and quality.

Review: Quest White Chocolate Raspberry Bars

I love when my favorite brands are prolific, focusing on continued development and expanding their offerings rather than settling into contentedness with what they have. Quest Nutrition definitely gets an A+ for creativity and self-motivation.

The bars in their repertoire do very well and have obsessed fans (like me) but they don't let that stop them from constantly working on the next big thing and releasing new products every few months. And, impressively, they manage to create amazing flavors without a crazy long list of ingredients (I've seriously had bars before where the ingredients list literally wrapped around the bar).

My taste buds are still swooning from the Quest Cravings peanut butter cups that came out around last holiday season (they've also put out their very tasty chocolate chip cookie dough bars in the interim) and now they've released another decadent flavor: white chocolate raspberry.

I'm more of a dark chocolate than a white chocolate raspberry, but still - be still, my heart. I tried the first bite straight out of the package and really enjoyed it.

But then I microwaved the rest of the bar for 20-30 seconds and it was divine.

Remove from wrapper before microwaving, of course!
20-30, you ask? I put it in for 30 seconds, but by the time it had been in there for 10 seconds a delightful smell began to waft from the microwave, tantalizing my scent-based taste receptors and severely trying my patience and self-control.

Clearly, as always, the chocolate won and I lost patience before the 30 seconds were over.

There are actual chunks of white chocolate in there and a great raspberry flavor, staying true to Quest Nutrition's goal of making healthy snacks that actually taste like what they claim to taste like.

All without sacrificing their usual great nutritional stats (high fiber, high protein, low sugar, yum)!

O(I)81

OU81 bars have a pretty cute name!

To tell the truth, the name was the main reason why I wanted to try them...

But their solid nutrition is a great reason to keep eating them!

The stats are pretty similar from bar to bar and all three flavors are based on seeds, almond butter, dates, and whey powder (so not vegan friendly, but great for all of us who aren't vegan). I liked that they kept the refined sugars out of the bar, making it a really great source of longer-lasting energy: sans the sugar crash!

They even chose apple juice sweetened cranberries in the Coconut Cranberry Bar, instead of the usual sugar-sweetened ones, which is a nice touch.

The coconut cranberry is tasty, but I preferred the chocolate flavors.

Don't I always?

Oh, did I mention that they're grain-free and the whey protein comes from grass-fed cows?

Just thought I'd throw that out there - though these are good enough that you'd want to eat them even if that weren't the case.

They're not as sticky as other date and nut based bars, probably because of the whey powder, and they were also sweet, but not cloyingly sweet. The chocolate flavor in the chocolate cherry bar could have been a bit stronger in my (chocoholic) opinion, but I liked the big chunks of cherry throughout. And the chocolate coffee bar was plenty chocolatey!

My one gripe is that while the bars had pretty similar stats to others (about 200 calories, 11g of sugar, 9g of protein) as other bars, they seemed a little smaller. They were pretty dense, though, and kept me satisfied probably as long as other bars (though I've never timed myself). The packaging was definitely bigger than the bar (maybe that's something they could work on, to reduce packaging waste).

But I still enjoyed the bars, all in all, and appreciated that they didn't grind up all the ingredients too smoothly - I liked being able to crunch through the pumpkin seeds and chew on the sweet dried fruit chunks.

Have you tried OU81 bars?

Do you eat bars as an afternoon snack or a morning snack more often?

Which of the three flavors sounds best to you?
