Last Minute Valentine's Day Ideas

Happy Valentine's Day! I'm a fan of this cutesy holiday.

Grumpy Cat Valentine's Day Funny

This year my work is my valentine (it's getting serious, guys - swoon) but here are some ideas for those of you who decided to celebrate at the last minute! Or - cough, cough - forgot about the holiday until your office exploded into a puff of pink and red confetti hearts this morning.

A long walk, ending at a cute dessert cafe or tea shop.

Long walks are perfect for just having time together to both enjoy each other's company in shared silence and to chat about everything and anything. They're wonderful! They also require extremely little planning and are doable on any budget.

There are more and less romantic places to take a walk, so no - I am not suggesting that you have a lovely stroll along the highway with your valentine. Pick a park (Central Park is perfect for New Yorkers!), walk along the river (Charles River on the Cambridge side is absolutely beautiful for Bostonians!), or find some other scenic route that isn't a part of either of your daily commutes.

When you've walked to your heart's content, end the night with a sweet treat or a warming cup of spiced chai!

Fun Valentine's Day Date Ideas

Valentine's Day is just a week away! It's one of those holidays that everyone either loves or hates. Right?

I'd be in the 'love it' group, but let's face it - Valentine's Day is no Christmas. So, instead, I'd say I thoroughly enjoy Valentine's Day but don't care quite enough to say I love it, nor do I obsess or remember to plan for it more than a week or two in advance.

...good thing I'm not trying to get restaurant reservations for Valentine's day. Those go so fast! Some really popular restaurants book up a solid month or two before the holiday - madness!

On the off-chance that you, similarly, don't have Valentine's Day reservations because you (a) don't want to spend the evening eating an overpriced, supposedly romantic meal in a packed restaurant with waiters buzzing around you, eager to get you in and out so the next couple can have your table or (b) forgot to make them, here are some fun alternative date night ideas for Valentine's Day!

Fun Gift Ideas for Your Valentine!

Valentine's Day goodies have been decorating shop shelves since the start of January. That's too early!

Now it's February, however, and that means that it is the right time to start thinking about how to make Valentine's Day an extra special celebration of what you share with your loved one!

You don't have to spend loads of money, make reservations at an overpriced fancy restaurant for a stiff dinner, or empty a jewelry store to make your beloved feel loved and cared for.

5 Fun Fall Dates in NYC

Winter has always been a favorite season of mine, largely because I'm absolutely and completely obsessed with Christmas. Fall is a favorite of many, however, and it has grown on me as I've gotten older, too!

Have you heard of 'cuffing season'? It's a ridiculous term that I recently learned of to explain the spike in new relationships in the fall and winter seasons. Apparently, people avoid the higher electricity costs associated with cold weather and heating by finding significant others to...keep them warm.

That cat GIF may be slightly gratuitous, but when do we not love adorable animals being adorable? I always do.

Anyway, I think it's much more likely that any such 'cuffing season' seasonal correlation, if there is one, would be due more to people being more settled in the fall and winter (since many people travel in summer) and thus more willing to see where something new could go.

Whatever the reason, lots of people are looking for fun date ideas in the fall. And there are so many! Read on for five fun fall date ideas in NYC!

5 Things I Wish Existed

The world is full of wonderful things (the internet!) and less wonderful things (the selfie stick) but sometimes the things we really need want don't exist.

Here's a short list of five things that would be awesome if they existed.

Date-bots.

We would send them to go do all the awkward first dates for us, then cut in for the second date with the good ones.

What Being Single On Valentine's Day Is Like

Last Valentine's Day was my first (and only, thus far) time celebrating the holiday in a relationship and before that Valentine's Day was a family/commercial holiday, but pretty divorced from its romantic mainstream version for me.

Now that I know what it 'should' be like, however, I can enjoy the plight of the single girl on Valentine's Day.

You have those other single girl friends who expect you to empathize about their V Day loneliness.

Girl, can you go sob over there in the corner? I'm trying to read my book kthnx.

The most exciting thing about your evening is when your Seamless order arrives #singleladyspecial

I've sustained a serious injury running to answer the door, it's seriously dangerous to get too excited.

That was for the mail, not Seamless, but still.

(How To) Have an Awesome Vacation with Your Boyfriend - Toddlers & Tiaras Style

In honor of the 4th of July, here's a vacation post!

Vacations are tons of fun! Boyfriends are tons of fun!

(Well, they should be. Or consider the single thing.)

Toddlers & Tiaras are tons of fun (to laugh at)!

Why not combine it all and have a how-to guide for vacations with boyfriends, courtesy of the tots of Toddlers & Tiaras?

Half of them probably already have lots of experience (and that's a conservative guess).

1) Figure out a planning style.

My boyfriend is really not into planning, but luckily I LOOOOVE it.

Like I would almost rather plan a vacation than go on one...

tumblr_m7ygk3jNXs1qb9pa3o1_500

So it works out perfectly for us! If you both enjoy planning equally, however, or if you both don't enjoy planning, figure out some sort of division of labor that's acceptable to everyone. As is the general rule in relationships, communication is key. Don't make assumptions and you won't develop resentments.

Tumblr_inline_mgn7ptmCyN1ryjwc0

Also, be sure to have open communication about vacation budgets.

Tumblr_inline_mg9szlxUzE1ro2d43

If one of you wants to spend as little as possible (and get back to work as soon as possible) and the other wants a full week of luxury, off of work, it's important that you discuss that upfront and agree on something that works for both of you.

2) Be very clear about vacation finances.

Generally, I think an even 50/50 split is good. That's what I do and I've found that keeping a google document of expenses along the way, then summing everything up, dividing by two, and seeing if anyone owes the other anything, is really handy. That way you don't have to deal with the potential awkwardness of having to go clear halfsies on every single meal and snack.

Clear communication about going 50/50 also avoids this happening every time the check comes when you go out.

Toddlers-and-Tiaras
So...are you going to get that?
The best part is that you can update the google doc from your phone, so it's simple to just keep two columns with X paid this much for this and Y paid that much for that.

3) Determine priorities for the vacation.

If one of you wants to tan by the beach and have a nice lazy vacay while the other really wants an active adventure vacation, it's important that you figure that out early and come to a conclusion.

The first step to finding a happy compromise and satisfying everyone's vacation desires is to know what they are. And I don't know about you, but I'm not a mind-reader.

(If you are a mind-reader and can teach me the tools of the trade, please give me a call at 555-4321. It would be so helpful at job interviews and in life in general).

4) Allow for a little personal space, especially if you're going on a long vacation for the first time.

I went to Disney World for 8 days with my boyfriend after only officially and exclusively dating for 3 months (and casually for 7). When it's still so new, you don't really know how living with a person for an extended time will be.

Though you might get along really well when you're only seeing each other a few hours a week, snark can happen when you're with each other 24/7, without breaks, away from the comforts of home, and with potential travel snafus cropping up.

Anigif_enhanced-buzz-26215-1326297606-1

A little alone time, or at least the possibility of it, can keep the snark in check.

5) Don't get too self-obsessed.

Remember that you're dating him, not yourself, and while self-love is important and you definitely need to pay heed to your desires, it's also important to remember that you're not the only one that's supposed to have an awesome time on this vacation. It's not always about I want what I want how I want what I want when I want it.

  • toddlers and tiaras little girl gif

That said, it is your vacation too and so it's important that there really is a true balance. Don't be persuaded into spending your whole vacation doing things that you don't want to do.

Tumblr_inline_mf9krgjNcQ1rao0jp

That's all guys! I hope the tips help. And if not, laughter (courtesy of the pint-sized beauty queens) is always good.

How did you approach planning the trip?

What is your top tip for a vacation with a SO?

Running Into Your Boyfriend's Ex When You're Out Together

We've all been there - that awkward moment when you're out with your boyfriend having a great time on a Saturday night and then...you awkwardly bump into his ex-girlfriend at the same party you're at.

In the grand scheme of things, it's not a big deal. We're all twenty-something college-educated young adults with good heads on our shoulders and bigger concerns than awkwardly bumping into our boyfriends' exes.

Still, it can be a socially awkward situation on a Saturday night and since there's nothing we like better than laughing at others' misfortunes (thanks, Hobbes's Superiority Theory of Humor), I would like to share my awkward with all of you in the spirit of encouraging laughter!

You're welcome.

When you think you recognize the girl from his old facebook pictures across the dance floor:

When you end up in the tiny, packed bathroom at the club at the same time that she's there and realize that it is her when you hear her name:

When you try not to be noticed:

When she clearly knows you're there and her ex (your boyfriend is there), and she's not happy about it:

When her drunk friend gets awkwardly confrontational for no reason, she's like:

And you're like:

When you leave for a new, less-awkward party:

...and then you bump into her again:

Do you have any funnily awkward stories to share?

My Break Up Playlist

In response to Tuesday's post, a reader asked that I post my break up playlist.

I have some pretty great suggestions to start (that's what you get for being over-prepared for everything - and German, so a little naturally grim). Here they are, separated into stages of break up grief!

When the break up is super-fresh and you're a smoldering heap of angst:

Simple Plan - Perfect
The All American Rejects - It Ends Tonight
Good Charlotte - I Don't Wanna Be In Love

emotions gif

When it's two AM and you're crying into your mug of tea (or other beverage of choice):

A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera - Say Something
Sailor & I - Tough Love
The Weeknd - Wicked Games

When you're all cried out and need an up-phase, but don't have the energy (possibly because it's 4am by now):

Major Lazer - Get Free

When the crying is over, your second wave of energy has hit, and you're ready to be over it:

Tina Yorke - Schoene Maenner Kuesst Man Nicht
Chris Brown - Loyal

What's your break up routine?

What's the longest it has taken you to get over a break up?

What's on your break up playlist?

Valentine's Day Recipe Ideas!

There are plenty of wonderful things to do on and for Valentine's Day! Depending on your relationship and preferences, it can be fun to go to the movies, go out to eat, take a long weekend, enjoy some theater, stay in and cook, etc.

The best part is that it's more of a flexible weekend of showing appreciation for the special person in your life than a set in stone one fixed day - especially when it's on a weekend/Friday, like it is this year!

In case you're busy on Friday or have other plans that night, meeting up to prepare and share a romantic breakfast together on Saturday can be a great option.

Plain Pancakes with Honey and Heart Shaped Fruit

It's lovely and not too much more difficult than regular pancakes, other than that it requires more time to cut the fruits properly. But if you're doing it together, it can be fun! Just definitely don't prep the fruits (at least not the bananas) ahead of time - they'll brown and that's just not as appetizing.

It incorporates asparagus, in case you want a little aphrodisiac in your breakfast!

Lemon Cheesecake Pancakes

They're cut pretty - and so delicate and fruity! I definitely recommend the lemon garnish - lemon is also great for cutting the sweetness of the cheesecake pancakes.

This recipe has asparagus (an aphrodisiac) and bacon (man's aphrodisiac?) so it's sure to please. Eggs also make for good staying power, so you'll have energy to do other fun things, like stroll or take a class, all day!

Berry Yogurt Crunch

Though seemingly less impressive than the others, this would be my favorite breakfast. Or, even better, a picnic of fruits, yogurt, cereal, and trail mix.

Though it's a little cold for a picnic...unless it's a couch picnic or you live near the equator?

Still, that just goes to show that the perfect gift depends on the gift recipient. Sometimes thought does count for something!

Which breakfast looks best to you?

Do you have any V Day plans?

Are you celebrating on Friday or over the weekend?

Fashion Fantasy: Wedding Dresses

I don't feel like writing much today, as my brain is seriously fried from studying chem. Instead, I'll just share some fashion fantasies.

I'm attending my first wedding ever (not my wedding, but it's the first wedding I've ever been to) so what better theme for today's post than drool-worthy wedding dresses?

Since this is a fashion fantasy, reasonability is not a consideration. Even if the dress costs as much as a small house or a college degree, it's going on the list if it's gorgeous.

Drooling over Vera Wang Bridal

And Vera Wang is on this list, too, of course! Isn't she just the queen of bridal couture?

There's the Vera Wang Leah...

And the Vera Wang Laura...

Which happens to be my big sister's name! Lovely dress, no? And she'll probably be the first one to get married, considering that she started dating about 8 years before me, haha.

Vera Wang Lark
Clearly Vera Wang can do no wrong.

As you can tell, I love huge, flouncy skirts on fairytale dresses.

David's Bridal
So I'm a princess. Sue me.

What's your favorite fashion fantasy?

Do you want a big wedding someday? The honeymoon is more important to me, personally, but I do want a gorgeous dress. How many occasions do you get in your life to wear something so stunning? Unless you're a red-carpet-gracing celeb, of course. That's always an option, too.

Would you consider a wedding dress in a color other than white? I would definitely want a big, white dress!

Super Super Angsty Hipster Stuff (sigh)

I tend not to seek out New York Times Notable Books or New York Times Bestsellers for my free time for-fun reads, but sometimes accidents happen and, well, a critically acclaimed book finds itself in my to-read pile.

Le sigh.

The most recent of these is Gary Shteyngart's Super Sad True Love Story a cultural critique, pop culture satire that's effectively a work of science fiction for the realist fiction lover.

Here's the blurb from the book website:

In a very near future—oh, let’s say next Tuesday—a functionally illiterate America is about to collapse. But don’t that tell that to poor Lenny Abramov, the thirty-nine-year-old son of an angry Russian immigrant janitor, proud author of what may well be the world’s last diary, and less-proud owner of a bald spot shaped like the great state of Ohio. Despite his job at an outfit called Post-Human Services, which attempts to provide immortality for its super-rich clientele, death is clearly stalking this cholesterol-rich morsel of a man.

And why shouldn’t it? Lenny’s from a different century—he totally loves books (or “printed, bound media artifacts,” as they’re now known), even though most of his peers find them smelly and annoying. But even more than books, Lenny loves Eunice Park, an impossibly cute and impossibly cruel twenty-four-year-old Korean American woman who just graduated from Elderbird College with a major in Images and a minor in Assertiveness.

After meeting Lenny on an extended Roman holiday, blistering Eunice puts that Assertiveness minor to work, teaching our “ancient dork” effective new ways to brush his teeth and making him buy a cottony nonflammable wardrobe. But America proves less flame-resistant than Lenny’s new threads. The country is crushed by a credit crisis, riots break out in New York’s Central Park, the city’s streets are lined with National Guard tanks on every corner, the dollar is so over, and our patient Chinese creditors may just be ready to foreclose on the whole mess. Undeterred, Lenny vows to love both Eunice and his homeland. He’s going to convince his fickle new love that in a time without standards or stability, in a world where single people can determine a dating prospect’s “hotness” and “sustainability” with the click of a button, in a society where the privileged may live forever but the unfortunate will die all too soon, there is still value in being a real human being.
So it's critically acclaimed.
Whoot-whoot for it.
But does that mean I've got to love it? Does that mean that I won't eventually start to tire of the extremism of the satire? This novel definitely 'out-Herods Herod,' but it is, after all, a satire.
Still. I get that society is trending towards sluttishness and superficiality and all that, but...onionskin jeans? Really now?
That's not to say that the novel doesn't have its moments - it is humorous at times, there are a lot of really psychologically insightful moments with the characters (perhaps too many, but maybe that's just me), the protagonists are well-developed (though I thought Joshie felt a bit flat as a character), and there's plenty to applaud in the novel, especially if you're a literary critic.
Here's the thing: I'm not.
Hipsters and book clubs are sure to love Super Sad True Love Story, but leave me to my Meg Cabot (please and thank you).
You can check out the book trailer to see if Super Sad True Love Story looks like something you'd like to read.

Or just to ogle James Franco...though that's definitely not his finest moment as far as hotness goes.

What are you reading right now?

What's your favorite and least favorite book genre?

Who is your favorite actor?

Friday Foodie Finds #32

It's Valentine's Day next Thursday!

I've never had a Valentine on Valentine's Day, so I've never really celebrated it. My mom sometimes sends me chocolate and my little sister sometimes sends me a card, but the whole romance thing? Not so much.

But I won't be a single grouch! Let the couples enjoy themselves. Here are some great Valentine's Day recipes to share with your special someone next week!

I think the one with the caramel and nuts (roughly in the center) looks yummiest! In general, though, I'm not the biggest chocolate covered strawberries fan.

I don't know why - I love chocolate and I love strawberries, but I just don't love them together.

Kristin's & Sharon's Calzone Hearts

Figs are supposedly an aphrodisiac, so why not try this out on that cute guy from lecture (or work)?

3 chocolate fig tarts Chocolate Fig Tarts | Fresh Figs in Good Company

Even if figs don't really make people more amorous, who can resist such a yummy looking tart?

Did anyone know that carrots are supposedly an aphrodisiac, too? I didn't, but they're definitely delicious!

Stephanie's

Raspberry Crepes with Cream Cheese filling & walnuts
Ooh, I think I might just be my own Valentine so that I can make those Pan-Crepes for myself on Thursday morning - they look delicious!

But if you're also still looking for a gift for your Valentine (which, again, can be yourself - no judgment!) you might want to check out Healthy Surprise.

Healthy Surprise is a monthly subscription service that's literally 'the gift that keeps giving.'

They have a starter box, a healthy box, and a larger box that are all packed with an assortment of delicious, nutritious goodies (the only variable is how much is in each box).

And for the international readers, they ship worldwide!

Everything in the box is vegan, gluten-free, natural, and soy-free. They choose what they put in each month carefully, so all you have to think about it what you're going to eat first - everything is guaranteed (110%) to be healthy and tasty!

If you're sending a Healthy Surprise Box as a gift basket, it comes with a personalized 5.5" x 8.5" full color glossy print card - that's a real card size, not like the dinky little tags you get with flower baskets.

Chocolate Macaroons!!!!!!!!!!
Frankly, if I had the option of choosing between a bouquet of decaying plant genitalia and a box full of this healthy goodness, Healthy Surprise wins every time.

Bars: the way to my heart. And they even sent two new-to-me bars: that's a rare find these days!
Sorry, but flowers just aren't as romantic as a box full of goodies that I can snack on all month - goodies that will make me feel every bit as good as they taste. I love when delicious food is healthy!

Like the Live Smart Cranberry-Pumpkin Seeds Raw Energy Bar! Full of healthy fats and plant energy, it's a tasty way to fuel up between meals.

And I'm still super impressed that Healthy Surprise managed to introduce me to a new bar that I had never even heard of before! That's really rare, considering that I'm the queen of bars :)

And you really can't beat Healthy Surprise convenience.

A full-sized bag of allergy-friendly trail mix and YUM YUM  YUM gluten-free Skinny Crisps!
Healthy Surprise is also my favorite subscription service thus far, because I find that it has a more unique assortment of healthy goodies than competitors, like Conscious Box.

I, for one, have never even heard of Nori Wrapped Power Wraps before, but they're delicious seed-y, flavorful sticks of energy and a delightful snack!

They're not sweet, as I had expected, but rather savory and rich from the seeds. They also have quite the spicy kick!

I really like how they wrapped it in Nori sheets. It reminds me of a healthy, vegan version of pepperoni sticks - but way yummier!

Kale chips, salty chocolate granola (Oh. My. Gosh.), bars, chocolate, dried fruits, and other healthy, tasty snacks galore - I love Healthy Surprise!

They really think of everything, even a squeeze pack of 100% fruit juice (mango pear pineapple!) to wash down the deliciousness.

What's your most memorable Valentine's Day memory?

Have you ever ordered a food subscription service?

Do you like flowers?
