The Snarky Stylist Steps In: Studded Shorts

Possibly due, at least in part, to the punk-rock fashion leanings of celebrities like Rihanna and Miley Cyrus, studs are appearing on everything. Studded shoes, bracelets, and so on have been popular for a while, but designers aren't stopping there.

Studs + summer = studded shorts!

It's really not as intimidating a fashion trend as it might appear to be and it's not as hard to pull off, either!

Here's an example of a cute way to wear studded shorts.

Anyone can wear them, you don't have to be a punk rocker or look like the kid you cross the street to avoid!

Can you tell that I love stacked bracelets? They're in most of my outfit combos!

Also, those shoes? So adorable.

Do you have studded shorts?

Would you wear studded shorts?

What trend do you hope will happen next?

Snarky Stylist: Sweet Summer Look!

It's approximately mid-summer (at least for those of us who count seasons by academic breaks) and the perfect time to asses whether you're getting everything out of your summer that you want.

But it's also Saturday - so use at least part of the day to relax and enjoy a DIY pedicure and fun summer fashion!

I think that should be on everyone's summer to-do list, anyway.

The Snarky Stylist Steps In: Heels

Have you ever seen an accessory that's just so extreme that you wonder what sort of outfit could possibly go with it?

I feel that way all the time, whenever I see a pair of really intense heels. You know the sort - the kind of platform pumps that Charlotte Russe seems to specialize in.

Charlotte Russe's heels aren't all that tacky or stripper-esque, thank goodness, but you get the gist (that pair isn't actually from Charlotte Russe, but I linked to a pair of theirs above and the heels in the outfit I created, below, are from Charlotte Russe).

How do you wear platform pumps without being offered twenties on the street corner?

Answer: It's tricky, but definitely possible.

Platform Pumps

Mini skirt dress

Coat
$525 - alannahhill.com.au

Charlotte Russe platform shoes

Ted Baker evening clutch
$115 - tedbaker.com

ALDO imitation jewelry
aldoshoes.com

Coil bracelet
maurices.com

Guerlain bronzing powder

The key is to go classy with the rest of your outfit and not to choose a skirt that's too short. Don't go overboard on make up and don't show cleavage!

Period. No cleavage. I don't care if you're wearing slacks, cleavage takes the look over into the trashy zone.

Luckily for me, this isn't really an issue for me. I can't walk in shoes like that.

What's the highest pair of heels you own?

Do you like platform pumps?

Where is your favorite place to buy shoes?

The Snarky Stylist Steps In: Traveling Comfortably

Today's post is a quick fashion post for those of you who are lucky enough to fly this summer!

There can be a lot of temperature changes when you're moving between airport, airplane, taxis, buses, and your departure and arrival destinations. Layering is key!

I also tend to advise against leggings type pants (their tights, not pants) but traveling is the exception. You want something that's comfy and will stretch with you if you have a little swelling mid-flight (the changes in pressure can definitely cause that) but you don't want to look like you're headed to the gym.

So sweat pants? Probably out. But leggings in a cute print (also great for camouflaging any little spills that occur while traveling) are a do.

Definitely stay away from white when you're traveling, unless you're the queen of clean and only traveling with equally impeccable travelers.

And high heels? You can wear those 364 other days of the year, leave them in your luggage for now. If you must wear heels, don't forget your Dr. Scholl's inserts and a pair of comfy flats in your carry on, for when common sense sets in.

A comfy, slouchy hat is great for if you get a bit chilly mid-flight. A lot of body heat escapes through your head, so it's an easy way to stay warm - and it's also really easy to take off! Don't forget sunglasses, either. It could be really sunny where you're headed, if you're lucky!

Stay away from real metal jewelry, to avoid hassle at TSA, and lay off the perfume. You don't want to be that girl on the plane! Same goes for nail polish - make sure that you apply it before the flight, not during the flight!

Oh, and my last tip - go easy on the eye makeup. Especially if you have a longer flight, your makeup probably won't look the same when you wake up as when you first get on the plane.

What do you wear when traveling?

Are you traveling anywhere this summer?

The Snarky Stylist: How to Wear Orange

Whenever I go to Germany or live in Boston/New York, the same thing always strikes me - people in the northern latitudes just don't do color!

I mean, yes, there are the various shades of navy, black, and gray - you have your rainy-day gray, your interview navy, your sullen charcoal, your mysterious onyx, etc.

But it all comes from a small one millimeter slice of the color wheel and, let's be real, not even the pretty part.

But since not everyone likes pink and (for some very odd reason) not everyone wants to prance around in full-on Disney Princess mode, here's a fun fashion alternative - orange!

Remember that moment in Legally Blond where orange was supposedly the new pink?

Didn't believe it for a second. It's just not true, orange can't achieve that same level of fabulous. But orange can be cute!

Tada!

My advice for pulling off orange is to accent with white (or possibly another light, simple color) instead of with more orange, another bright color, or even a darker color (like black. Or gray).

Please don't do a shades of orange outfit - you'll just look like the fruit.

What do you think is the hardest color to wear?

What sorts of colors are most fashionable where you live?

If you could have one Disney Princess's wardrobe, which one would you want?

The Snarky Stylist Snarks Some More

The Snarky Stylist is ba-aaack!

*Cue the Saws theme song.*

Today our victim is a Disney Channel cartoon character. For the sake of hilarity and the purposes of this post, we'll pretend that the character is her own entity.

AKA I can snark as much as  I like.

Hooray!

Since I'm of the old-school Disney generation, we'll make over Kim Possible today!

Kim Possible Navigation.png

I understand the need for practical, comfortable clothing when you're juggling saving the world from evil and high school. But those cargo pants are doing her no favors and there are way cuter sneakers out there.

Also, she could use a better bra. May I introduce you to Victoria's Secret, Kim Possible?

Here's an outfit that will get the job done without giving Joan Rivers more material.

The zipper pockets one these pants are much more flattering (and feminine) than Kim's bulky side-of-leg pockets and the length is fun and youthful.

The new sneakers have a little style (better than the black canvas shoes she sports otherwise) and even provide a bit of ankle support for scaling walls.

Now I understand that Kim loves flaunting those abs, but my high school had a dress code. Did she really think no one would notice that half her shirt is missing?

For a crime fighting ensemble that won't get her thrown in detention, a full shirt with one shoulder exposed works way better.

After all, spring/summer 2013 is all about the shoulders.

Lastly, these gloves are less bulky and better for dexterity.

You're welcome, Kim!

Who should I make over next?

Who do you think is the worst dressed cartoon character? The best-dressed?
