How To Find A Summer Sublease

I cannot remember the last time that I have lived in the same city for a solid year. I live primarily in NYC these days, and have for almost two years now, but there's always a month here, two months there...

image

...you get the idea. As such, I now consider myself somewhat of an old hat at finding subleases, especially in busy cities like Boston and NYC.

The first time I looked for a sublease, no less in NYC, it felt like falling into an internet pit of inflated rents, stock photos, and poorly written descriptions.

image

Don't worry, it's not really so scary! I just found my summer sublease in Boston 1.5 weeks ago and I'll be moving back up for the season in just 2 weeks. Yay!

Read on for the best places to look for subleases, whether you're budget-minded or more concerned with amenities.

Back to School Basics

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Brita for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Fall is approaching! This year is really flying by, much like last year. Does anyone else have that feeling, or is it just because so much is changing in my life?

I graduated from Harvard! I moved to NYC! I'm a working adult now!

Anyway, the year flew by and the approach of fall means that it's back to school season.

Okay, so not for me. But I love back to school!

Back to school is awesome. What's one major reason why?

Back to school shopping.

Guys, I had SO much fun with school supplies. There's pink glitter stationery, awesome pens, cool tech, and everything for the dorm room.

If you're just starting college and don't know what the must-haves are, here's a short list of the absolute essentials:

1) A Full-Length Mirror

I didn't have one for a month last year (senior year). WHAT. Obviously that's a necessity for a fashion-forward college student!

2) A Brita® Pitcher

Brita® Pitchers are available at Target and they're not too pricey, but super convenient. You can fill them up in your bathroom and refill whenever you need more water! It's great, because it's way more eco-friendly than bottled water - not to mention way cheaper in the course of a semester.

Water is important for everyone, including college students, because staying hydrated keeps your brain working optimally, your body functioning properly, your energy levels up, and your skin looking great.

Hey! That's important! There are so many functions in college.

3) A fan.

Most dorms, unless you're living somewhere super posh, don't have A/C. Trust me, there will be nights when you will melt if you don't have a good fan.

My freshman year fall was particularly bad, several of my friends and I camped out in the Science Center some nights for the A/C!

4) A snack stash.

All-nighters require fuel and dining halls often lock up at night, even the cereal and milk sections. Since you'er not home with a 24/7 kitchen, be sure to keep some snacks for when you really need that extra energy.

Great snacks to have in your stash include: granola bars, protein bars, cereals you can eat out of the box, trail mix, dried fruit, chocolate (for that time of the month), and whatever other shelf-stable snacks you love!

5) More underwear than you think you'll need.

Sometimes laundry just doesn't happen - welcome to reading period and final's week. So that you don't find yourself in the awkward position of wearing swimsuits to class.
Besides, awesome excuse to go wild at Victoria's Secret.

Shopping spree!

What are your back to school essentials for college?

Do you like back to school or the end of the school year better?

Are you still in school? If not, are you considering going back to school for another degree at some point?

I GRADUATED FROM HARVARD!

This is a bit over-due, but here's a photo dump post (courtesy of my smartphone) of my graduation from Harvard.

Graduating from Harvard #letmetakeaselfie
I now have an A.B. Degree in Human Evolutionary Biology from Harvard University (in a nice frame and everything) and am officially a real life grown up working a real life full time (and then some) awesome job as Chief City Writer at a tech startup in SoHo!

At lunch with my parents
Our Class Day speaker was Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook and our Commencement Speaker was Michael Bloomberg (and let's be honest - his name is his brand) but the real standouts were our two honorary degree recipients.

President George H W Bush received an honorary doctorate of law!

18-time Grammy winner Aretha Franklin (aka, the Queen of Soul) received a doctorate of arts!

And President Faust of Harvard was her usual cool self.

Congratulations, class of 2014!

The Second Wave of Midterms

Spring break is over and it's time for the second wave of midterms.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

I empathize 100% with whatever that poor thing. I'm feeling exactly what he/she/it is.

Do you have exams right after break?

Do you prefer exams and assignments due right before or right after break?

Where did you go/are you going for spring break?

Rant of the Day: (Don't) Stop Bossy

Sheryl Sandberg of LeanIn (okay, okay - and COO of Facebook, so that might ring a few more bells) has been all over the news lately with her anti-bossy campaign.

And oh, look - the Girl Scouts are behind it! As a 12-year Girl Scout (twelve awesome years) I'm going to sit here, tying slip knots and eating Girl Scout cookies (the biggest takeaways from all of that, no?), and beg to differ.

And yes, I was called bossy. And yes, I don't think that's a bad thing.

Bossy = Like a boss. Done. Everyone's talking about it now like it's this revolutionary new thing that bossy kids are just exhibiting leadership skills.

Um, no. It's built into the word.

Obama Bitch Please

And why is this becoming a female empowerment thing? I was right there on that playground and there were some bossy little boys, too!

I don't disagree that we should encourage development of leadership skills, but banning bossy is ridiculous. All I could think when I read about this is those women who've banned 'the F word.'

Oh, okay, then. So when you want me to help your kid with their health class homework and they get to nutrition, I should just say that the three major macronutrients are carbohydrates, proteins, and thatbadword

There's nothing wrong with any of these words. They're just words and are neither inherently negative nor inherently positive. Frankly, if you asked me (which you didn't, but this is my blog so I'll talk anyway), being called bossy sounds like a pretty positive thing.

Bosses:
* Make more money
* Have more work-life satisfaction
* Love their bosses (assuming it's a traditional one boss model and not some sort of nested boss hierarchy)
* Set their schedules
* Have nicer houses
* Can afford more glitter gel pens things

13 Reasons Why You Totally Deserve To Treat Yo Self

Maybe we should just focus on trying to make it more okay for girls to be leaders? That makes a lot more sense to me than demonizing words. I like writing. Don't take my words away!

I mean, yeah, there are over a million words in the English language. But I want them!

Have you ever been called bossy?

What's your opinion of the anti-bossy campaign?

Would you promote censorship of language in the above specified ways?

Veggie Vibes: Midterm Survival Secret

I did a vlog review of Veggie Vibes a few weeks ago and just absolutely loved all of their food. It was literally some of the best food that I've ever eaten in my whole life.

Popeye Soup: A really creamy, surprisingly thick raw vegan soup made with spinach, kale, celery, carrots, lemon, chillies, and herbs - also something creamy, because it's super creamy, but I'm not sure what. Coconut?
Because it was wave one of midterm exams at Harvard this week, I decided to treat myself to some of Chef Perkunas's amazing meals - it's a real timesaver, because the dishes are all individually packaged and don't even need to be heated up or anything. It's faster than takeout - not to mention WAY yummier, healthier, raw, vegan, and productive.

Productive seems like a strange word to describe food, but these meals are so energizing - even when I'm exhausted after a late night at Lamont (the 24 hour library in Harvard Yard).

Often when I'm sleep-deprived and eat a filling meal, I just feel even more like falling asleep. These are perfect for when you're busy, because I'm just filled with energy after eating them. They wake me right up!

Like the other meals from them, all of what I ordered this week was perfect - generous portions that filled me up and kept me going without that icky over-full feeling, high quality ingredients that you could taste the freshness in, and just such delightful culinary magic that everything (even beets) tasted amazing!

Every week, Chef Perkunas puts together a new menu of delightful raw vegan dishes that can be delivered locally or shipped nationwide (I'm on the East Coast, so very grateful for that). The meals are all amazing, but the dessert is always the best.

This week was a new one - Glowlicious! It's basically creamy, nutty deliciousness with sweet, sticky, jam-my fruit on top.

AKA perfection.

I also ordered a bag of their kale chips, because they're really delicious and would put Lay's out of business if they had as intense a marketing team as Lay's. Fact.

There's still time to order them for next week (they delivery on Tuesdays and accept orders through Saturday - sometimes Sunday, but that's cutting it close). Don't forget to mention Living, Learning, Eating to get a free extra dish with your order! They ship nationwide!

How do you stay sane when you're busy?

What's your productivity secret?

Veggie Vibes: Convenient, Healthy, and Obscenely Delicious!

I had the huge pleasure of trying out Chef Perkunas's organic raw food delivery service, Veggie Vibes, and vlogging about my experience.

Can you tell that I'm a (huge) fan?
The Reader's Digest version is that Veggie Vibes is the best thing ever, Chef Perkunas is amazing, and the food was both absurdly delicious and extremely energizing. I had so much energy and I didn't even go all raw!

Veggie Vibes Super Kong Bars
Everything was amazing, (watch my vlog!) so it's really hard to pick a favorite.

Veggie Vibes Chocolate Brownie
Ultimately, I think I'm going to have to go with the Chocolate Brownie and the Raw Granola as my two top favorites.

The  Shaman's Lunchbox and sprouted burger coming in as the savory close seconds.

Veggie Vibes Shaman Lunchbox
I was so surprised by how satisfying the meals were! I'm not vegan, I'm vegetarian, and I have to admit that (like many) I've always thought that vegan meals would be less satisfying. I have tried a good number of vegan meals and found that was true too often.

Veggie Vibes Shaman Lunchbox
Vegan food seemed to have two options - either light and unsatisfying (leaving me out of energy and/or ravenous just an hour later) or it was super greasy and stomach-ache inducing. Veggie Vibes meals were neither - they were filling and satisfying without feeling too heavy!

Veggie Vibes Raw Coleslaw/Dip
And, unlike many raw food options, Veggie Vibes has 'low-nut' dishes that emphasize sunflower seeds and sprouted grains, instead, in case too many nuts upset your stomach. It's perfect!

Veggie Vibes Raw Coleslaw/Dip
The meals were delicious! Be sure to check out my vlog about the experience and then try it out yourself - you can order as few as eight meals and up to as many meals as you would like for delivery anywhere in the continental USA!

Mention Living, Learning, Eating for a FREE extra entree with you order!

Have you tried Veggie Vibes?

Which of the meals looks the best to you?

Holiday Mistakes NOT To Make

Holidays are great and the Christmas is season is my ABSOLUTEHANDSDOWNFAVORITE time of the year. But holidays, with all the increased social activity, can also provide prime opportunity to social suicide.

Especially when you combine high spirits with spiked eggnog and then throw your boss/dean/professor/research advisor into the mix.

Here are some (all too common) holiday bloopers to avoid. Just say no to embarrassment and practice safe merrymaking!

DON'T serve red wine if you have a new white carpet/couch and invited your klutzy friends.

We all know who those are. I'm one of them (but I'm 20 and don't underage-drink, so it's more like don't serve me grape juice).

DON'T regift carelessly.

Make sure you remember who your gift was from if you're regifting, so that you don't regift it to the same person or to their best friend/sister/boyfriend/mother. AWKWARD.

Also, try to make sure that you're regifting something because you think the recipient will actually be pleased by the gift, not just because you weren't and want to get rid of it. You don't want it to be regifted year after year after year - it will probably find its way back to you if it is!

DON'T give all your guests food poisoning by improperly thawing a bird and serving it still half frozen.

The bigger the bird, the longer it takes to cook through. Not that I know much about cooking meat, as a vegetarian, but I know enough to know that un- or under-cooked poultry is a big no-no-no-no-NO.

DON'T wait until the last minute to do your Christmas shopping.

Christmas shopping should be fun! I think it's the most fun sort of shopping, period. But last minute Christmas shopping isn't fun for anyone, so don't do it!

Start early and enjoy the Christmas cheer longer.

DON'T throw your fashion sense out the window, just because there's red and green involved.

I'm sorry, but no. If you love Christmas sweaters, go for it. By all means, you do you.

But do know that we're all judging. Hard.

DON'T forget to have fun!

It's Christmas, after all! There's no time for scrooges and grouches!

What are your Christmas plans?

Do you have any funny holiday disaster stories to share?

5 Ways to do Halloween on A Budget!

I know it's a little early for Halloween costumes, but I'm always a bit early to get excited about holidays. Summer break is lovely, and this summer was loads of fun, but there are no big holidays to get excited about.

Halloween definitely isn't even on the same register as Christmas, in my opinion, but after such a holiday drought I'll take what I can get. And others apparently feel the same way - there's an upward trend in the number of people that celebrate Halloween each year!

According the National Retail Foundation, however, Halloween spirit isn't the only thing that's increasing. Spending is increasing, as well, with the average consumer expected to spend around $79.82 on Halloween this year.

To help keep that Halloween spending in check (ie: save that money for the really awesome holidays, *cough, cough* Christmas), here are a few tips!

1) Start early.

One of the best ways to save money is often investing a bit of time in advance for forward planning. Keep an eye out in the ads for sales on candy and decorations! Even if you don't get the Sunday paper, lots of stores put their advertisements online these days.

funny coupon image
My face when Harris Teeter has triple coupon day!
2) Have a costume swap!

Meet with a few friends to swap Halloween costumes. The Wicked Witch of the West costume that they've worn three years and can't stomach the site of might just be exactly what you want to be this year! This option is not only budget-friendly and environmentally-friendly, but can also be a fun social activity. Turn it into a party with some holiday-themed snacks and music! Ghostbusters, anyone?

3) Give an old costume a facelift!

Sometimes you can find a new look in an old place - you don't even have to leave home for this one! Pick a costume from a few years ago and, with some imagination, a creative vision, and some new accessories (Party City has plenty of sales starting early and the Dollar Tree is also always a great Halloween option) you can turn an old favorite into a spooky new style!

Velma from Scooby-Doo
Some costumes might even come straight from your wardrobe!

4) Make your party potluck style!

If you're in charge of hosting this year (and maybe every year) don't let that mean that you have to deplete your funds. By asking each guest to bring something (have people sign up, so that everyone doesn't show up with the same thing) you save money, are less stressed, and get to try new treats!

5) Grow your own pumpkin!

Okay, so this one takes a bit more advance planning than just two months. But if you have some yard space, this can be a fun way to prepare for the holiday throughout the year - and gardening is a great way to teach kids appreciation of nature!

Kids gardening - boy holding big pumpkin
Isn't this adorable?
As you can see, there are plenty of intermediates between dropping huge sums on the holiday and going as a ghost (read: sheet with two eye holes cut out). You can have fun, show off your snazzy holiday style, and not break the bank!

What's the coolest Halloween costume you've ever had?

Review: Hooray Puree Makes Veggies Easy!

My Hooray Puree experience started off on the wrong foot, as my Twitter followers know.

The company was very responsive and apologetic for accidentally not fulfilling my full order. Mistakes can happen to anyone, so I guess ultimately it's our responsibility as consumers to double check and make sure that we get everything that we pay for!

After that rocky beginning, however, it was all uphill. Hooray Puree makes pureed vegetables that are all-natural with no preservatives, no additives, and no food coloring. And now they're organic, too!
There are currently three varieties that you can order online - carrot, butternut squash, and spinach. They have sweet potato coming up soon, too! There are pictures of broccoli and cauliflower on the website, too, so maybe those are still to come? One can hope :)

There are two packets in a box and six boxes in a case, costing $24 (before shipping). That comes out to $2 per packet, which is certainly pretty pricy (especially considering that you can pick up a box of salad at the grocery store for $3.99). As a student, that prices me out for a staple product, unless they offered some sort of bulk purchase discount (like getting a certain percentage off if you order a certain number of cases). The convenience is undeniable, however.

The pureed veggies are perfect for mixing into casseroles, etc. - I actually ordered the spinach because I have a friend who said it's impossible to get her to eat greens and I wanted to try! My attempts with sneaking whole veggies into things was unsuccessful, but I finally made a tray of brownies the other day with the spinach puree and she loved them.

From the recipe section of their website, not mine

I know you could puree the spinach yourself in the blender, if you wanted to put in the time/effort/prep and clean up, but I've made recipes with self-pureed veggies before and you could definitely still taste the veggies (unlike with the Hooray Puree). That's probably only a good option if you have a VitaMix, but those are roughly a bazillion dollars.

Give or take.

I made same mac & cheese with butternut squash puree in them and the mac & cheese turned out super creamy and delicious!

From the recipe section of their website, not mine

And until you've added carrot puree to a microwave muffin, you haven't experienced convenient veggie breakfast bliss!

I'm sorry that I don't have my own recipe photos for you guys, as it took some recipe tweaking and a few runs to get anything to actually look good (though everything tasted good from the get-go) but I might order some more, when I have a bit extra saved up from my shifts at the library again, and post them for y'all.

Especially for parents (or babysitters/nannies!) of little kids with veggie aversions, these are a lifesaver! Even as a busy college student, these would be so handy, since veggies are delicious but take a little more time to prep than other veggies. I'd love to see if they could somehow make the product more affordable for students, but I understand that the production and packaging costs may keep that from being feasible, especially now that they're organic.

04 01 13 hooraypurée 1

The spinach ones are really awesome and I would love to see them try it with more greens. I'm thinking Kale, Dandelion Greens, Collards, etc. I know I would give them a try! At the moment, they're best to find online. They're supposedly in Whole Foods as well, but I haven't seen them in the local ones yet.

The sweet potato puree is great, but it's personally my least favorite, because I eat sweet potatoes all the time, anyway. I feel the same way about the butternut squash puree, since I love squash in the usual form and eat plenty enough of them already. Spinach is definitely the one of the current offerings that I think is best/most useful for me. The butternut squash puree is the easiest one to 'hide,' however, so that's probably the best for parents with very veggie-aversive kids.

Have you tried Hooray Puree?

What veggie would you want them to puree?

What are the convenience items you simply must have?

5 Wacky College Majors You've Never Heard Of

The start of a new year in college always comes with introductions to new peers (and re-introductions to old peers, for the more forgetful among us). What's your name, where are you from, what dorm are you in, what's your major - we all know the questions in and out, even if they're so banal that we forget the answers within seconds.

Biology, Engineering, English, Economics, Mathematics, blah blah blah. In the spirit of the new semester, here are 5 wacky college majors you've never heard of!

1) Folklore & Mythology - Harvard University

Want a Harvard degree without the stress of endless labs and never-ending exams? Folklore & Mythology might be what you're looking for! If you're stressed after years of working your but off in high school to get in, you might find that this major (often cited as one of the easiest on campus, if not the easiest) is just for you!

Learning about Tangled for class? Yes, please!
Instead of delineations, Folk & Myth concentrators get to study the oral traditions of stories. Take classes like 'Hero and Trickster' and 'History of Witchcraft and Charm Magic' instead of organic chemistry and Systems Neuroscience! Sure, you might have a harder time finding a related job after graduation than your peers in other degree programs - but hey, it's a Harvard degree!

And all those unicorn wranglers and fairytale writers need a major, too.

2) Professional Nanny - Sullivan University

My European friends and family always make fun of the US for requiring degrees for all sorts of jobs that don't require degrees abroad (ex: secretary, nurse, etc.).

Instead of embracing a similar apprenticeship program and mitigating the country's student debt load, we like to boast high university attendance rates as a sign of a more egalitarian education system, where you don't need good grades or exceptional aptitude to go to college (anyone can get into college here, we differentiate instead by how good the schools you get into are). I, for one, am not pleased that college degrees are becoming the new high school degrees and graduate degrees the new college degrees.

What is with the societal trend to prolong adolescence, even when it means increasing debt loads for young people?

Kentucky's Sullivan University has taken it a step further, making babysitting yet another job you need a college degree.

Yup. And it isn't even April Fool's Day, guys.

The twelve month program allows even professional nannies to take part in the great American tradition of student debt, sharing the wealth (or lack thereof) further! As a part of the nanny program, you'll learn manners, how to talk to children, and how to understand family dynamics. As a graduate of the program, you'll probably be one of the more sought-after nannies in the area - that is, if your prospective employer can stop laughing.

3) Fermentation Sciences - Appalachian State University

Know a frat boy who couldn't be bothered to show up to lecture but was always certain to appear at even the slightest mention of beer pong? This is the major for him.

Yup, guys, you can major in beer.

I don't even know what else to say to this, so we'll move right along to the next one.

4) Pop Culture - Bowling Green State University

Are mom and dad bugging you to get a degree and do something with your life, but all you really want to do is watch Real Housewives reruns and see the E! special on Snooki and offspring? Bowling Green State University has you covered.

Would this pass as a research project?
Watch movies for class, read tabloids for homework - does it get much better than this? The university claims that job prospects after grad aren't too shabby, citing advertising, journalism, public relations, and library work as careers in which graduates of the program tend to thrive.

The cynic in me can't help but point out that many of those are fields in which, at least as recently as twenty or thirty years ago, no degree was necessary...

5) Sex - San Francisco State University

No, I'm not kidding. You actually can major in sex. Can you imagine telling your grandparents that over Thanksgiving dinner?

Grandma: So, little Susie, what are you majoring in.

       Susie: Sex.

Grandma: (Passes out into her mashed potatoes).

       Awkward silence.

Susie's Parents: So, um, wasn't the weather lovely this fall?

Go figure that a Californian university is offering that one. But really, guys. What are the career prospects? Work in San Fernando Valley as the most educated fluffer ever?

Sometimes I just have to wonder about the state of our higher education system. Le sigh.

Anyway, have to go study now. You know, #biomajorproblems.

Sadly, there will be no unicorns in my homework...but at least I have pink glitter school supplies!

Walmart for the win.

What is/was your major?

What's the oddest major you've heard of?

Where did you go to school?

5 Cool Term-Time Jobs

The new school year is starting soon for most of us (and it has already started for some!) and while that means that we have another year of new insights, academic challenges and triumphs, and a whole new set of classes to look forward to, it also is a time of the year when many of us are thinking about our finances.

From http://blog30x30.blogspot.de/2009/06/which-student-are-you.html

There are enough reasons to be stressed without financial worry factoring in, but the truth is that it often does. School is expensive, guys. Even if you look beyond tuition and rent, there are so many other expenses:

Food.
Books.
Supplies.
A computer (and computer repairs, if yours is a little older).
Clothes.
Fun stuff.
Field Trips.
Transportation.

The list goes on and on and on and on, but most students don't have wallets that are equally matched. To mitigate student debt, it can be a really great idea to work during your studies.

But what sorts of part-time jobs can students, without loads of work experience and often with limited availability due to class schedules, get?

1) Babysitting.

This one is tried and true, but it pops up time and time again on these sorts of lists for that very reason. Babysitting is a job that often allows a lot of flexibility and can often also get you more than minimum wage per hour! I personally use Urbansitter and Sittercity to help me find jobs, since network/word of mouth jobs can be hard to get in a new town.

2) Tutoring.

Relatedly, you can give tutoring a go. I know there are some tutoring websites out there, like Wyzant, but I haven't personally had much success with them. These jobs can be even more lucrative than babysitting jobs, paying double or triple the hourly minimum wage rate (and why not start getting some returns on all that hard-earned education?) but they can also be much harder to get. If you want top-dollar pay, you'll usually have to work for a tutoring agency and those tend to only employ tutors with either lots of experience or an actual teaching degree. Some even require master's degrees!

Don't let this be yours.
3) On-campus Jobs.

While these tend to pay around minimum wage, in my experience, some schools are good about trying to keep the hourly wages more fair. These jobs tend to be more flexible and more willing to work around class schedules, but be aware that most jobs will require you to keep up your schedule throughout the busy midterm and final exam periods, since they rely on almost exclusively student workers who are just as busy as you are during those times. On the upside, these jobs can be easier to get than unaffiliated work, especially if you have work-study funding!

4) Petcare.

Whether it's dog-walking, cat-sitting, or the like, these jobs are great as a temporary work option in case you're around during major holidays or if you just want to get some fresh air with 'man's best friend' while lightening the burden of textbook expenses.

5) DIY jobs.

By this, I mean making up your own job! If you want a way to stay active and make some money, you might find that yard work is a good fit for you. Decide what your rate is (keep it fair if you want to get customers) and print out a few flyers with rip-off tabs on the bottom with your phone number or email address. Hang them around campus and, if what you're offering is needed in the air and priced right, you can find yourself making money helping faculty, staff, and other community members in no time!

I hope at least some of these help ease the path to graduation for you!

How do you make extra money?

If you babysit, how do you find jobs?

What's the best part-time job you've ever had?
