Travel Wrap-Up: My Trip to Germany!

Tomorrow I start my new job at a tech startup in Cambridge, MA! I've already moved into my new apartment and love it. The location is great, my roommate is really nice, the common spaces are lovely, and (for the first time in a while) I've finally taken the time to really decorate my room in a way that reflects my personality and makes me happy!

I have a cat hanging from my light switch! So yes, I love my new home. I'm also so excited to start my new job tomorrow and learn a lot!

Before that, here's a photo dump post of some beautiful images from my summer vacation with my family in Germany! I'm already looking forward to visiting them again next summer. <3 p="">

I love strolling around the Schloss Derneburg property!

How to Survive Long Travel

I love traveling!

I didn't make this meme, but I apologize for the missing 'l' in 'acutally'
...but when we fantasize about travel, we imagine direct flights with no delays, no turbulence, gorgeous views out of our window seats, and plenty of yummy snacks and cold drinks from friendly stewardesses with bright smiles and pleasant voices.

Anyone with any significant travel experience can attest to the fantasy-reality disconnect. But I still love travel! I love meeting new people, seeing new things or old things that I haven't seen in a while, trying exotic fruits and veggies and interesting vegetarian dishes, and just enjoying the sense of adventure and long walks in new places. There's so much to see in our big world!

The next 2.5 weeks are going to be full of all sorts of crazy (and long) travels - I'm taking the train back to NYC today after a summer in Boston, then I'm packing up my apartment in NYC and saying goodbye to my NYC friends before flying to Berlin on Thursday. That is, fortunately, a direct flight from JFK to TXL, but when I arrive on Friday I'll have to take two trains to get to the lovely village in northwestern Germany where my family lives!

After enjoying a wonderful 1.5 weeks with them, I'll take two trains back to Berlin, sleep in an airport hotel, take a really early morning flight with a layover in Dusseldorf to arrive in JFK in the late afternoon. After doing the whole immigration thing, I'll go through TSA again to catch a flight to Boston that I booked separately!

Fingers crossed that there are no delays, or that could get tight...I'll probably Uber to my new apartment in Cambridge, where I'll have two days to unpack the moving boxes and my suitcase before I start my new job on the marketing team of a tech startup!

Phew.

With so much travel and a bit of hectic ahead of me, here are some of the top tips that I've accumulated over the years of travel - my first international trip was before my first birthday!

Travel Round-Up: Turks and Caicos

Those of you who follow me on Instagram (I'm @danaikadzere) already know that I had a very fun, quite last-minute work trip to Turks and Caicos last week!

It was beautiful!

Things to Do On NYC's UES

NYC is an incredibly colorful, vibrant city and I've been lucky to call it home for going on a year and a half now! The city is split into a number of different neighborhoods and, while the city isn't particularly geographically large, it feels enormous because of how many different cultures and subcultures it houses within its different neighborhoods!

I live in lower Manhattan and there is a huge difference between lower Manhattan and upper Manhattan. For the first year+ that I've lived here, I've stuck mostly to lower Manhattan. My favorite bits of the city are Union Square and below (though the Upper West Side is quite nice), so it just made sense. I've recently decided to branch out a bit, however, and took the time to hop on the 4/5 train to the Upper East Side.

Upper East Side
Surprise! It wasn't the stiff and boring home of elderly WASPs that I thought it might be. The UES is as charming as any other bit of NYC! Read on for some of my favorite things to do on NYC's Upper East Side.

7 Reasons to See Pixar's 'Inside Out'!

'Minions' comes out in just a few days! I'm not sure who among I, the 22-year-old, and my little sister, the 10-year-old, is the more excited one.

An accurate representation of how we're responding to the approach of the 'Minions' movie release
Still, before you rush to the cinemas to see 'Minions,' there is another movie that is already out in the cinemas that you should definitely consider watching.

Pixar's 'Inside Out'!

INSIDE OUT 18

I had high hopes for this movie, because it's a Pixar movie and I love all things Disney, but it exceeded my already high expectations by far. I loved every moment of the movie!

If you haven't seen 'Inside Out' yet, here are seven reasons why you should!

5 Times It's Okay to Take A Cab

As a city girl - it still feels unreal to call myself that, even though I've lived in NYC for a year and Boston for three - I have plenty of experience with all sorts of transportation that does not involve a personal vehicle.

I'm entirely okay with that. The world (or, more specifically, car accident statistics) doesn't need me on the roads.

Still, when you don't rely on your own car for transportation, you face a lot of trade-offs.

image

Buses are slow.

The subway doesn't always have a direct route to where I need to go. It also tends to make me motion sick.

You can't walk or bike everywhere.

Cabs are expensive.

So when is it acceptable to go for the cab or - horror of all horrors - Uber on surge pricing? Here are five times when it's totally okay to skip the public choice and hire a taxi or a car!

Stress-Free Travel Essentials!

Summer is just around the bend and, judging by the weather in NYC lately, it may even be coming a little early this year! I'm going to be out of NYC this summer and while I'm excited for a change of pace, I'm sad that I'll have to leave NYC (temporarily) soon.

I'm going to be traveling by train (to Boston, for the month of June) and by airplane (to Germany, for the month of July), so here are my travel essentials for any kind of travel - land, air, or even sea!

Vacation Every Day!

Guys, it's May. MAY.

Wasn't it 2014 yesterday? Spring snuck up on me and now it's already almost summer!

I can't wait for my summer. I have so many fun plans and, while I'm going to miss NYC like crazy while I'm gone for pretty much the entirety of this summer, the change of pace and scene will be fun.

I'm spending June in Boston and July in Germany, then back to NYC in August. Since this is my last month in the city, before my temporary departure, I'm making the most out of it! With this lovely spring weather, that includes taking full advantage of my NYC rooftop. That, and exploring new neighborhoods!

I knocked off both of those to-do's with a single tropical-themed rooftop girls get-together. With spontaneity and GoogleMaps as my guide, I armed myself with my MetroCard and earbuds for the looong trek across the river to Brooklyn. Twenty-five minutes later, I emerged from the subway and strode into the Pathmark, straight for the summer aisle.

Tropical Rooftop Girl's Get-Together Essentials:

   * Paper umbrellas (you're never too old or too chic for paper umbrellas)
   * An assortment of chocolates, chips, and a fruit and veggie platter
   * Palm Breeze sparkling alcohol spritz in Pineapple Mandarin Orange

Check. Back in Manhattan later that afternoon, I packed a basket full of the above essentials, gathered together a few girlfriends, and headed to the roof. Party time!

I was excited to share Palm Breeze with my friends. Palm Breeze is a flavored malt beverage, which (in street language) means that it's an alcoholic drink made with a malt base. Sound familiar? That's because that's similar to how beer is made! But while beers often target primarily male audiences, and I'm really not a fan of the taste, Palm Breeze is unique in that it's the first drink that's primarily out there for women.

My friends and I aren't big drinkers, so we skipped mixing the alcohol spritz with any stronger drinks, like liquor, and enjoyed them on their own. Palm Breeze also comes in a Ruby Red Citrus flavor, but we didn't get to try that one this time (the supermarket was out). The Pineapple Mandarin Orange, however, was a huge hit.

It was fruity, fresh, and - between the alcohol spritz that we're all not used to and the fun of being in the sun and gathered as a group - had us laughing and having a riot in no time!

Since there's no island getaway in my summer plans this year, this was the perfect little tropical vacay for every day! Get your girls together for a spontaneous get-together, dress up in your spring-chic style, and head outside to soak up some sun and laughs!

Don't feel like hosting a get-together, but still want to have fun with friends? Check out the Palm Breeze/Blo Bar events for a fun time minus the prep and planning! There are events in San Diego, DC, Austin, and Dallas.

Being an early 20's woman can be a confusing, uncertain thing sometimes. But it can also be so much fun! Many of us don't yet have the responsibilities of spouses and children, so we can be spontaneous and do what we want when we want. I think it's important to embrace that now and then, because if life moves at all like this year did, we'll be at the next phase in the blink of an eye!

What are your summer plans?

What's your favorite thing to do with your girlfriends?

What is your favorite drink?

Healthy Hacks in NYC

The Big Apple is a must-see on any European traveler's US travel list and most American travelers' travel lists, too.

I've been lucky enough to live in this amazing city since last June, as well as for various month to three month chunks over the past few years, and the longer I live here, the more I fall in love!

cute, despicable me, funny, minions, new york
This can actually happen in NYC and it does, regularly. How could you not love this city?
As a New Yorker (I'm not going to lie, that's still fun to say) I've picked up a lot of tricks about how to make the most of the city.

Im a expert

Since none of us like to feel bloated and sluggish after travel, here are some of my city local tricks and tips for having a healthy trip to NYC!

The Best Acai Bowls in Hawaii!

Summer, and summer break for those on an academic calendar, is rapidly approaching. It's the perfect time for a cyber getaway - to Hawaii! I had the most amazing vacation of my life this past fall. I went to Hawaii (a split stay between Oahu and Kauai) for ten days with my (then) boyfriend!

It was expensive, but so worth it. Hawaii is the frickin' BEST.

Hawaii is stunning, fun, peaceful, relaxing, multicultural, rich in biodiversity, and also incredibly delicious! I highly recommend saving up and going some day, even as a once in a lifetime trip (it's a perfect, and popular, honeymoon spot).

Anyway, if you do manage to go, here's a ranked list of the best acai bowls in Oahu, Hawaii!

Hey, researching this was tough work. But someone has to do it ;)

Healthy Hacks in Hawaii

Are you lucky enough to have a trip to Hawaii on the horizon? YAY!

Hawaii is stunning.

But as much as we all love a beautiful vacation, vacations have a common bad reputation for wrecking healthy habits. Yes, you're not adhering to your normal routine. Yes, you're probably not hitting the gym and getting your usual lunch salad. You're on vacation, things should be different than in your day-to-day life!

True as that is, that doesn't mean that you have to sacrifice health for fun!

Finding Beauty in Your Backyard

Minnesota isn't literally my backyard (though it is for a lot of Americans - a lot of us are Midwesterners and the Minneapolis-St Paul metropolitan area is the third largest in the midwest).

It is a surprisingly beautiful, decidedly underrated, state!

The lakes are gorgeous and there are many of them - I loved Lake Minnetonka during my brief stay in Minnesota.

A warning, since this is a fair review, however: Minnesota is a state of extremes. Though it has plenty of lakes, it's a land-locked state and, true to form, fluctuates between temperature extremes. You might get some nice weather, if you're lucky, but you could also face highs in the 100s in the summer and lows in the negative numbers in the winter.

Definitely pack accordingly and be prepared for the worst!

And the best, as far as beauty goes. Minnesota is not all cornfields. There are lots of beautiful forests and parks, including the one where I got the shot of the stunning waterfall above! It's a really beautiful state.

There are also some places along the rivers (see the Minnesota River above, where it meets with the Mississippi River - it's actually a tributary river of the Mississippi!) where there are sand "beaches."

Where does the sand come from in a land-locked state, you ask?

Sandstone cliffs! Here's a cave in a sandstone cave, were you could easily chip in your initials with a strong fingernail or (for the daintier) a strong stick.

Some people really came prepared, though - one couple brought a chisel!

What's a beautiful place near you?

What state/city/place where you surprised to like?

Do you ever vacation near where you live? If so, what percentage of the time?

(How To) Have an Awesome Vacation with Your Boyfriend - Toddlers & Tiaras Style

In honor of the 4th of July, here's a vacation post!

Vacations are tons of fun! Boyfriends are tons of fun!

(Well, they should be. Or consider the single thing.)

Toddlers & Tiaras are tons of fun (to laugh at)!

Why not combine it all and have a how-to guide for vacations with boyfriends, courtesy of the tots of Toddlers & Tiaras?

Half of them probably already have lots of experience (and that's a conservative guess).

1) Figure out a planning style.

My boyfriend is really not into planning, but luckily I LOOOOVE it.

Like I would almost rather plan a vacation than go on one...

tumblr_m7ygk3jNXs1qb9pa3o1_500

So it works out perfectly for us! If you both enjoy planning equally, however, or if you both don't enjoy planning, figure out some sort of division of labor that's acceptable to everyone. As is the general rule in relationships, communication is key. Don't make assumptions and you won't develop resentments.

Tumblr_inline_mgn7ptmCyN1ryjwc0

Also, be sure to have open communication about vacation budgets.

Tumblr_inline_mg9szlxUzE1ro2d43

If one of you wants to spend as little as possible (and get back to work as soon as possible) and the other wants a full week of luxury, off of work, it's important that you discuss that upfront and agree on something that works for both of you.

2) Be very clear about vacation finances.

Generally, I think an even 50/50 split is good. That's what I do and I've found that keeping a google document of expenses along the way, then summing everything up, dividing by two, and seeing if anyone owes the other anything, is really handy. That way you don't have to deal with the potential awkwardness of having to go clear halfsies on every single meal and snack.

Clear communication about going 50/50 also avoids this happening every time the check comes when you go out.

Toddlers-and-Tiaras
So...are you going to get that?
The best part is that you can update the google doc from your phone, so it's simple to just keep two columns with X paid this much for this and Y paid that much for that.

3) Determine priorities for the vacation.

If one of you wants to tan by the beach and have a nice lazy vacay while the other really wants an active adventure vacation, it's important that you figure that out early and come to a conclusion.

Credit: Courtesy of Tumblr

The first step to finding a happy compromise and satisfying everyone's vacation desires is to know what they are. And I don't know about you, but I'm not a mind-reader.

(If you are a mind-reader and can teach me the tools of the trade, please give me a call at 555-4321. It would be so helpful at job interviews and in life in general).

4) Allow for a little personal space, especially if you're going on a long vacation for the first time.

I went to Disney World for 8 days with my boyfriend after only officially and exclusively dating for 3 months (and casually for 7). When it's still so new, you don't really know how living with a person for an extended time will be.

Though you might get along really well when you're only seeing each other a few hours a week, snark can happen when you're with each other 24/7, without breaks, away from the comforts of home, and with potential travel snafus cropping up.

Anigif_enhanced-buzz-26215-1326297606-1

A little alone time, or at least the possibility of it, can keep the snark in check.

5) Don't get too self-obsessed.

Remember that you're dating him, not yourself, and while self-love is important and you definitely need to pay heed to your desires, it's also important to remember that you're not the only one that's supposed to have an awesome time on this vacation. It's not always about I want what I want how I want what I want when I want it.

  • toddlers and tiaras little girl gif

That said, it is your vacation too and so it's important that there really is a true balance. Don't be persuaded into spending your whole vacation doing things that you don't want to do.

Tumblr_inline_mf9krgjNcQ1rao0jp

That's all guys! I hope the tips help. And if not, laughter (courtesy of the pint-sized beauty queens) is always good.

Virtual Vacation: Honolulu Must-Do's

In an ideal world, we would all go on vacation for one week out of every month. We would travel to different beautiful locations of our choice to take in the sites, have some relaxing mornings watching the sun rise quietly, and enjoying the best company, food, and experiences.

However, that's also the world where taxes pay you, writing whatever you feel like all day is financially  productive, and you get paid to go shopping on Fifth Avenue.

Yeah.

So in the long gaps between taking your last vacation and earning your next vacation, it's fun to build dream vacations in the clouds...

Buckle your seat belts and disregard your safety pamphlets, because it's time for lift off - to Honolulu!

When to go:

Clearly there will be lots of mixed opinions on this one. Frankly, there's probably no wrong time to go Hawaii. But since you asked (fiiiiiine, you didn't, but we'll pretend since this is my blog) here's my opinion.

September.

Before you give me flack for picking one of those anticlimactic filler months, here's my (very solid) reasoning:

 - Summer is too pricey. Fact.
 - Christmas is nicer with a pine tree and snow.
 - Spring break in Hawaii will be super packed in.
 - August is bound to still be a little pricey with the last delinquents summer break stragglers who aren't back-to-school-yet.

So September it is! It's still warm and perfect for chillin' on the beach, it's not too long to wait for your 'summer' vacation, it's much more affordable than a month or two earlier, and it doesn't detract from your enjoyment of Christmas!

For the flight:

A fun, funny travel companion, some snacks (it's a long flight, especially from the east coast), and a laptop with some DVDs. Hopefully your flight will have you covered on the entertainment and sustenance fronts, but it never hurts to be prepared.

You want to start your trip on a good note!

Where to stay:

According to TripAdvisor, you should stay at the Trump International Hotel Waikiki Beach Walk. By all means, do!

If you're Daddy Warbucks.

Rooms go for over $550 a night, however, and that's on the budget travel sites. For those of us with more grounded budgets, or who prefer our castles in the sky to be at least mildly realistic, try the Hilton Waikiki Beach.

It's still a quite nice hotel with very positive traveler reviews (2,100 reviews average out to 4 out of 5 thumbs up) and it's four stars with an internationally trusted brand. Best of all, it's beachfront and it's clean!

The few complaints mostly seem to come down to it not having particularly much character. But when it comes down to it, you're in Hawaii for Hawaii, not to spend all day in your room! Get character out on the beach!

What to try:

I personally think you can't go to Hawaii without trying surfing or SUP (stand up paddle boarding). I would want to try both!

Don't let the puppy show you up

You'll also want to try your hand at a round of hula dancing, even if it requires the cover of the night and some liquid courage. Vacation is about having fun and doing things you don't do every day!

What to eat:

Shave ice. If you've learned anything from President Obama's double-term, let it be that there are few less iconic Hawaiian foods than shave ice. Our favorite political celebrity is beloved fodder of tabloids and I think we've all seen some photo or another of the Obama family enjoying shave ice on a Hawaiian vacation.

Source: Nalu Island
And, heck, you're practically halfway to Asia - have it with some sweet azuki beans!

To bring back:

Pass on the half-naked hula dancer bobby head dolls and the lame t-shirts. Choose something you'll actually use, whether it's an artisan serving platter in the local style or a grass skirt if you're someone who likes to dance around your room in the evening with props.

That way, you'll get to relive your vacation!

Don't forget:

Hawaii is far away! There's a six hour time difference from the east coast, so be sure to factor the possibility of jet lag in when making plans for your first day or two of vacation!

Trying something crazy, like surfing epic waves when you've never even been able to get a boogie board going, is torture when you're tired and grouchy.

It should be fun!

Have you ever been to Hawaii?

How often do you go on vacation?

What's the next place you want to go on vacation to?

Sponsored - Venus Snap for Spring Break Smoothness!

It's spring break in just a few weeks - WHOOT! I can't believe that the semester is nearing halfway done. When my first midterm exams began, I was like whaaaaaaaaaaat?

Because I'm a senior. Which means I'll be graduating. And I'm not going to grad school (at least not in the foreseeable future). So I'll be entering the real world.

Mind. Blown.

Anyway, since this is possibly my last spring break ever I decided to finally do it right! I went to boarding school for high school, so spring break has always been a time for me to go home and see my family. As such, I never had the typical warm-and-sunny-and-tropical spring break experience. But this year I'm going to Florida!

The beach + Disney week * 1 whole week = AWESOME.

I can't even imagine lying out in a swimsuit right now, since Boston is still experiencing polar vortex-y aftereffects and we're all freezing to frostsicles up here as a result. Warm spring break destinations, however, are a reality - and mean we can preview our summer wardrobes for a week!

Venus Snaps are a great way to get that smoothness on the go that you need when you're rocking shorts and spring frocks for the first time in months.

The mini-razors are perfect for throwing in your bag so you can stay smooth and stunning all break long, without giving up precious luggage space that could go towards packing an extra pair of sandals or that seventh swimsuit (because one, two, or six are never enough).

See how little that is, relative to my carry-on suitcase (which has obviously been on a lot of trips with me)?
Venus Snaps are available at Target, so you don't even have to make an extra stop on your pre-break errand run.

I realize that's assuming that you're planning on going to Target, but who doesn't go to Target before any and every vacation? They have all the essentials, like little ziplock bags to keep the folks at TSA happy, flip flops, clothes, accessories, and chocolate.

Obviously, it's impossible to travel without chocolate. Chaos will ensue.

Back to the awesome Venus Snaps - they come with the Venus Embrace blade we know and love, but with an easy-to-grip mini handle and cute compact case that make it perfect for instant smoothness on the go.

The pivoting heads hug your curves to get all the little hairs and a water activated ribbon of moisture keeps your shave nick-free. Yay!

When is your spring break?

What's the coolest place you've ever gone on spring break?

What are you doing for spring break this year?

How Not to Find an Apartment Sublease in NYC

January is coming up and, with it, Harvard's J-Term.

Either because the deans are feeling particularly giving at this time of year (no Scrooges in the lot!) or because they know they work us to the bone the rest of the year or just because they don't feel like coming to work until after MLK day (even deans gotta sleep off that New Year's Eve buzz, ya know), we don't have class again until around the last week of January.

There are a lot of options for what to do during that month off from school, post-holidays, and lots of people do lots of different things. I'm doing my different thing (auditioning like nobody's business, I hope) in NYC and am thus on the search for a two to three week sublease in one of the most expensive cities in the US.

Wow, I'm moving to New York. The Big Apple. The city that never sleeps. How exciting!

Yes, I am already crying tears of financial pain at the thought of paying rent for a Boston apartment and a NYC apartment at the same time. So much waste.

Anyway, I need to find out an apartment. And, believe it or not (believe it, I told you to), it's harder than it sounds to find a tiny apartment for 2 grand or so for 2.5 weeks.

After all, you don't want to be the poor fool who gets stuck with the teeny tiny apartment for 3 grand for 2.5 weeks.

11 Going To Your Room
That looks just about right
There's probably some impish mogul with a heaping helping of schadenfreude somewhere, sitting over his iPad mini and cackling as he randomly moves decimal points around on NYC real estate pricing, adding a zero or three here and there.

12 Kiss Your Savings

There are probably many ways to go about finding an apartment (and the more money you have at your disposal, the more enjoyable the hunt will be). But there are also a number of ways not to go about your hunt and I'll list a few here.

DON'T post a 'housing wanted' ad on Craigslist with a full-length photo of you at the beach.

Believe it or not, I've seen it. Obviously putting up a photo of yourself in a bikini (=about as conservative as lingerie, beach setting or not) is only going to attract a bunch of creepy old skeevs trying to lure you into their would-be dens of immorality.

Do The Creep
You'd have better luck trying to live in the underground, the perv factor probably couldn't be much higher.

DON'T contact a real estate agency.

Unless Trump is your daddy (and if so, can we be friends?) a real estate agency probably isn't the way to go. They're generally trying to lease apartments for longer term so that they can collect that hefty commission. Likelihood of them being impressed by you showing up with your piggy bank and hick-town dream budget?

21 Everybody's Looking At You

Approximately equal to the likelihood of a 60 degree day in February in Boston.

DON'T try corporate housing.

See above, re: bathing in champagne lifestyle. For those among us who are a little more normal...

What It's Like Apartment Hunting In NYC

Moving on.

DON'T expect to get an immediate answer from the dream property that you finally find after hours of scouring Craigslist.

Not to be a total pessimist, but the place that you think is perfect and a total bargain (by NYC standards, that is) probably looks the same to everyone else and someone is likely bidding to go higher than the posted price, depending on desperation levels and the size of the windows.

Large windows = lots for sunlight = keeps you from wanting to fling yourself out of a window. Small windows = super dark and depressing lair = makes you want fling yourself out of said window -> window isn't big enough to fling yourself out of, you'd get stuck with your butt in and your head out (pretty awkward position to call for help from, so you likely decide to skip it and take a nap, instead) = YAY but brings you back to the beginning of the cycle (a vicious circle to continue until the end of your stay).

Anyway, this is one of the few times where quantity might beat quality. Especially if you're in a rush to find a place, you probably don't want to just reach out to one place at a time.

DON'T try to barter.

'Your Hell's Kitchen (sounds awful, is actually a very desirable location) studio for my services as a breakdance instructor/pancake maker/chicken wrangler' isn't likely going to get you far in a city where the same studio can easily go for the aforementioned $2,000+ per month.

How?
The only exception is if you're looking for a room in exchanging for your child wrangling services. People seem to value that more than chicken wrangling in the city (seriously, the offers you find on Craigslist) but it's still highly improbable for a short lease. Live-in nannies tend to get hired for minimum stays of several months and, more often, years. Further, you'll have very little time to yourself to do whatever it is that you wanted to do in NYC. Unlike chickens, you can't just feed children and put them in their coop for the rest of the day.

This dad who just wants his kid to appreciate the great outdoors.
Though you could always put the kid in a pair of overalls and take it with, like this guy
That's probably breaking all sorts of general child-rearing expectations and it's a pretty sure-fire way to get fired in less time than it takes for a certain children's television channel star to flip the switch from wholesome to traphouse outcast.

But it's worth it. Because when you finally find a place?

20 Getting In Subway Calm

You feel like that.

Do you have any advice for how to actually go about the business of finding an apartment?

When was the last time you moved?

What's the craziest thing you've ever seen on Craigslist (or any other sort of wanted ad)?

WIAW #99: Euro-Style

This WIAW uses old photos (and a few web photos), since I've been photographing everything on my cell phone but - alas - just realized that I'm out of coverage here in Europe, so I can't email the photos to myself without racking up obscene roaming charges.

My European eats look somewhat different from my US eats (no green smoothies, nooooooooo - how I miss my blender) but they're also very tasty. I love German food!

Peas and Crayons

Because there are no green smoothies to start the day, I've been starting the day with muesli and Broetchen.

The muesli above is pictured with regular lowfat milk, but I really like mixing it up sometimes with buttermilk or yogurt. Yum!

Sometimes I have knuspermuesli (aka granola) with seeds and yogurt.

Somehow the dairy tastes different here - and even more delicious!

In Germany, I have Broetchen several times a week. But Saturday Broetchen are the best, because they're always fresh from the baker!

Pretzel Buns
From Fork, Spoon, Knife

Lunch (Mittagsessen) is the cooked meal of the day, always followed by some tasty dessert like a compote and pudding.

What's for lunch varies, but vegetarian bratwurst with fresh potatoes and a side of sauerkraut or some sort of pasta dish appear pretty frequently on the menu.

In the middle/late afternoon, there's coffee (tea, in my case) and cake.

Also, random shoutout to German chocolate: it's awesome.

In a country where the bread is so ridiculously amazing that you really can't believe it until you try it, what better way to end the day than with a bread-y Abendbrot

With chocolate is always tasty, as is with Ovomaltine spread or Nutella (or the Aldi knockoff, which I almost like better - I think I actually like the Milkyway version better than either of those last two options, though the Ovomaltine chocolate spread is my favorite).

With the heat we've been having, late night snacks of chilled fruit or ice cream are the best.

Then again, fruits and ice cream are always pretty up there in deliciousness.
