How To Find A Summer Sublease

I cannot remember the last time that I have lived in the same city for a solid year. I live primarily in NYC these days, and have for almost two years now, but there's always a month here, two months there...

image

...you get the idea. As such, I now consider myself somewhat of an old hat at finding subleases, especially in busy cities like Boston and NYC.

The first time I looked for a sublease, no less in NYC, it felt like falling into an internet pit of inflated rents, stock photos, and poorly written descriptions.

image

Don't worry, it's not really so scary! I just found my summer sublease in Boston 1.5 weeks ago and I'll be moving back up for the season in just 2 weeks. Yay!

Read on for the best places to look for subleases, whether you're budget-minded or more concerned with amenities.

Welcome to the Caffeinated Club!

The holiday season, specifically all of December, is my favorite favorite favorite time of year! It can also be a really busy time of year, however.

If you're in college, the end of the semester - right before Christmas break - is usually when you're pulling all nighters and near-all nighters cramming for exams and finishing final projects and term papers. I'm not suggesting that you cram it all into death week and miss the recommended amount of time, but let's be real. It happens.

Even if you're done with school, like me, work can often really pick up right before the holidays and busier, longer workdays, paired with an increasingly busy social calendar, can really make you need a little extra energy!

But is the only option for non-coffee drinkers an unhealthy soda fix?

I recently got to try some drinks from Caffeinated Club, a brand of unsweetened club soda with the same amount of caffeine in each 12oz bottle as in a can of coca cola. But without the sugar, artificial sweeteners, or calories of sodas or diet sodas!

It is a great alternative to soda for a caffeine kick and tastes great chilled on its own. It comes in four flavors - Raspberry, Orange Grapefruit, Lemon, and Clear. My favorite is Raspberry! Clear is plain club soda (but with a caffeine kick!) but the three fruity flavors are unsweetened club soda with a hint of fruit flavor.

I'm going to emphasize this again - they are flavored with fruit, but not sweet. For a lot of people, that's a plus. If you want your drink sweet, however, they make a great mixer with juice for a more powerful pickup than the juice alone would provide. And they make your juice bubbly!

While I tend to drink a lot of tea and try to get around seven hours of sleep a night, when I can (and not get too many nights in a row of under five), I know some friends for whom this would be a lifesaver. Even for me, I'm sure it will come in handy!

^Their photo, that is clearly not my hand.
I have a jam packed day tomorrow - scheduled from 6am to 11pm straight through with work (thank goodness, I need the distraction) and then a holiday party that I'll go to straight from work (I'm packing a slinky dress and heels in my backpack, along with some red lipstick and a mascara wand - I know how to do this busy schedule thing) and that I'll probably stay at until 2am. Then Sunday it's back at it with a shoot at noon!

Believe me, I'm packing one of these to take with me tomorrow.

Another fun Caffeinated Club fact? If you order online, shipping is absolutely free anywhere in the Continental USA!

What are you up to this weekend?

Have you tried Caffeinated Club?

What's your go-to for an energy kick?

5 Best Things About It Not Being A Leap Year

Leap Years only happen every fourth year, so they get all the love. While 2014 might not be a leap year, however, it can still be pretty awesome!

Here are five great things about 2014 (or, specifically, about 2014 not being a leap year).

1) My birthday comes one day sooner.

Whoot for all March babies!

2) Graduation comes one day sooner.

I don't actually know much about how academic calendars work behind the scenes, so this might not actually be true. Maybe it's a number of days versus a what day kind of thing.

Ah well. We can at least pretend that this one is true, yes? And that the post-graduation world isn't a scary world full of uncertain success and certain poverty?

Kidding, I'm not actually that macabre.

3) The 28 of February falls on a Friday, so March 1 will fall on a Saturday!

I think starting on a Saturday must be a good omen for a month.

4) You don't work an extra day for free, if you're on a fixed annual wage.

Again, I'm not really sure how work days/calendars work, since I am (happily) still a student, but it sounds like a nice benefit if it is true.

5) Christmas comes a day sooner!

Though I have to admit that, even for me, it might be just a tad bit too early to start the Christmas 2014 countdown.

What's the best thing that has happened to you this month?

Do you have any big things coming up before the end of February?

Do you know any leap year babies?

Holiday Mistakes NOT To Make

Holidays are great and the Christmas is season is my ABSOLUTEHANDSDOWNFAVORITE time of the year. But holidays, with all the increased social activity, can also provide prime opportunity to social suicide.

Especially when you combine high spirits with spiked eggnog and then throw your boss/dean/professor/research advisor into the mix.

Here are some (all too common) holiday bloopers to avoid. Just say no to embarrassment and practice safe merrymaking!

DON'T serve red wine if you have a new white carpet/couch and invited your klutzy friends.

We all know who those are. I'm one of them (but I'm 20 and don't underage-drink, so it's more like don't serve me grape juice).

DON'T regift carelessly.

Make sure you remember who your gift was from if you're regifting, so that you don't regift it to the same person or to their best friend/sister/boyfriend/mother. AWKWARD.

Also, try to make sure that you're regifting something because you think the recipient will actually be pleased by the gift, not just because you weren't and want to get rid of it. You don't want it to be regifted year after year after year - it will probably find its way back to you if it is!

DON'T give all your guests food poisoning by improperly thawing a bird and serving it still half frozen.

The bigger the bird, the longer it takes to cook through. Not that I know much about cooking meat, as a vegetarian, but I know enough to know that un- or under-cooked poultry is a big no-no-no-no-NO.

DON'T wait until the last minute to do your Christmas shopping.

Christmas shopping should be fun! I think it's the most fun sort of shopping, period. But last minute Christmas shopping isn't fun for anyone, so don't do it!

Start early and enjoy the Christmas cheer longer.

DON'T throw your fashion sense out the window, just because there's red and green involved.

I'm sorry, but no. If you love Christmas sweaters, go for it. By all means, you do you.

But do know that we're all judging. Hard.

DON'T forget to have fun!

It's Christmas, after all! There's no time for scrooges and grouches!

What are your Christmas plans?

Do you have any funny holiday disaster stories to share?

So You Want to Get a Job: Dressing the part

In this installment of So You Want to Get a Job, I'm suggesting a pretty standard job interview outfit that will keep the attention where it belongs (on your brilliant resume) and off of less relevant topics (the birthmark on your thigh).

Dolce Gabbana shirt top
€580 - farfetch.com

L K Bennett pleated skirt
€70 - lkbennett.com

Patent leather pumps
€25 - maurices.com

Lauren Ralph Lauren leather satchel purse
€225 - piperlime.gap.com

Cluster earrings
€22 - swellcaroline.com

If I can say only thing, it's this: JOB INTERVIEW TIME IS NOT THE TIME TO SHOW WHAT YOUR MAMA GAVE YOU. That (a) won't get you a job, (b) may keep you from getting a job you otherwise would have, and (c) will get you a bad reputation.

DON'T DO IT. Save your dignity and keep those skirts knee-length and longer, even if that's not at all what you normally wear. I have nothing against your legs, but they probably shouldn't be on display when you're trying to be taken seriously as a young professional.

Also, don't go for your crazy high heels, enormous costume jewelry, or bright eyeshadow. Remember that you're outfit should be more or less neutral and you should be the one standing out!

What do you normally wear to interviews?

So You Want A Job: Resume Bloopers

Taking life too seriously is no fun. Even when you're thinking about something as important as your entry into the job market, you can still have a little fun and stay light-hearted about the whole thing.

For everyone who's currently working on polishing up a resume to apply for jobs, here are some funny resume don'ts. Don't let any of these be you!

Spell, much?

People blog professionally? WHAT.
Accurate spelling isn't enough. Make sure you're also clear in your resume, because misunderstandings can be unfortunate.

DDD_10FunnyPunctuationProblems_CookingDogs

Don't use colloquialisms (or profanity!) in your cover letter. Please.

Job Application Fail

Remember to target your resume distribution, guys, don't just send it to any and every company out there.

While it's great to leverage your networks when you're looking for a job, make sure you do so in an appropriate, tasteful way.

unemployed santa cartoon

That wouldn't be an appropriate way.

Sometimes things don't go in your favor and someone else gets the job. While you shouldn't let that make you feel bad about yourself, don't assume you didn't get the job because you're just too awesome. Or do assume it, if that's what your ego needs, but don't tell everyone that - whenever I hear that, my immediate reaction is to internally roll my eyes.

Right. And I'm not the Queen of England because I'm too royal.

04.02JOBSEARCH%20copy

If you do get the job, don't be lazy.

lazy worker fail

But don't worry, workers aren't the only ones making mistakes.

Maybe we could all benefit from some more spelling bees.

Application Fail

As well as more realistic expectations.

Want Ad Fail

More realistic expectations, coupled with a better understanding of how math works, certainly wouldn't hurt.

Neither would a new recruitment manager at Pizza Hut.

Probably Bad News Extra

Something tells me the applications aren't pouring in.

Hiring Fail

At least the competitor's recruitment efforts aren't going much better.

One can only hope, right?

5 Cool Term-Time Jobs

The new school year is starting soon for most of us (and it has already started for some!) and while that means that we have another year of new insights, academic challenges and triumphs, and a whole new set of classes to look forward to, it also is a time of the year when many of us are thinking about our finances.

From http://blog30x30.blogspot.de/2009/06/which-student-are-you.html

There are enough reasons to be stressed without financial worry factoring in, but the truth is that it often does. School is expensive, guys. Even if you look beyond tuition and rent, there are so many other expenses:

Food.
Books.
Supplies.
A computer (and computer repairs, if yours is a little older).
Clothes.
Fun stuff.
Field Trips.
Transportation.

The list goes on and on and on and on, but most students don't have wallets that are equally matched. To mitigate student debt, it can be a really great idea to work during your studies.

But what sorts of part-time jobs can students, without loads of work experience and often with limited availability due to class schedules, get?

1) Babysitting.

This one is tried and true, but it pops up time and time again on these sorts of lists for that very reason. Babysitting is a job that often allows a lot of flexibility and can often also get you more than minimum wage per hour! I personally use Urbansitter and Sittercity to help me find jobs, since network/word of mouth jobs can be hard to get in a new town.

2) Tutoring.

Relatedly, you can give tutoring a go. I know there are some tutoring websites out there, like Wyzant, but I haven't personally had much success with them. These jobs can be even more lucrative than babysitting jobs, paying double or triple the hourly minimum wage rate (and why not start getting some returns on all that hard-earned education?) but they can also be much harder to get. If you want top-dollar pay, you'll usually have to work for a tutoring agency and those tend to only employ tutors with either lots of experience or an actual teaching degree. Some even require master's degrees!

Don't let this be yours.
3) On-campus Jobs.

While these tend to pay around minimum wage, in my experience, some schools are good about trying to keep the hourly wages more fair. These jobs tend to be more flexible and more willing to work around class schedules, but be aware that most jobs will require you to keep up your schedule throughout the busy midterm and final exam periods, since they rely on almost exclusively student workers who are just as busy as you are during those times. On the upside, these jobs can be easier to get than unaffiliated work, especially if you have work-study funding!

4) Petcare.

Whether it's dog-walking, cat-sitting, or the like, these jobs are great as a temporary work option in case you're around during major holidays or if you just want to get some fresh air with 'man's best friend' while lightening the burden of textbook expenses.

5) DIY jobs.

By this, I mean making up your own job! If you want a way to stay active and make some money, you might find that yard work is a good fit for you. Decide what your rate is (keep it fair if you want to get customers) and print out a few flyers with rip-off tabs on the bottom with your phone number or email address. Hang them around campus and, if what you're offering is needed in the air and priced right, you can find yourself making money helping faculty, staff, and other community members in no time!

I hope at least some of these help ease the path to graduation for you!

The Snarky Stylist Steps In: LSAT Fashion

I'm taking the LSAT today! Is anyone else taking it, too?

Despite my peppy punctuation,  I'm not as enthusiastic as I might seem. It's a loooooong test and I prefer shorter tests.

Or no tests. No tests is best.

Still, what must be done will be done - and then it will be over! Other than preparing (I didn't really), sleeping well and eating well, dressing for the occasion is another way to make the testing process as painless as possible.

I personally prefer wearing pants of some sort on exam days, rather than skirts, because then I can sit however I want without any worry about my decency. Alternately, I like loose dresses with longer skirts.

What I do not like is anything tight - I don't want to feel my clothing or think about it when I'm supposed to be kicking an exam's butt! That's what I really like about these pants. Yes, the baggy crotch (aka: full diaper) pants are a bit of a daring style, but you can definitely get away with it in an exam.

I can even show up to an exam in sweat pants. First and foremost, exam fashion is about comfort. Style can wait for the post-exam celebration! I like this tank, because it reminds us that fun times are ahead. Same with the glitter nails and the fun accessories - those little things can help (or at least not hurt) with some of the testing anxiety.

If you're testing today, too, good luck!

Well, that was fun! Almost like a mini-vacation, no?

Okay, so I'm exaggerating.

But still.

One thing I'm definitely noticing from our cold weather counterparts is an affinity for layering. Given the colder days that are coming (and are here already, for some of us) we can learn a thing or two from them!

Okay, eats time!

You may remember Just Fruit Bars from waaaaaay back at the end of summer, when they appeared in my Healthy Lunchbox Series. My little sister really liked them, so when I was looking for a handy dried fruit snack to have on-hand in my backpack or handbag, I decided to give them a try myself.

love blueberries and (since most of their bars are either based on pear or apple as a foundation) decided to go with Pear Blueberry. The bars come in either a 25g or 40g size, depending on how snacky you're feeling, and are all wheat, dairy, gluten, and nut free.

There are two whole servings of fruit in a 25g bar and it's nothing but fruit - no added sugars, no artificial flavors, no artificial colors, no preservatives, no additives

Just fruit.

The bars are all sticky and firm, a lot thicker than fruit leather-stylet bars and also chewier (there's enough thickness for your teeth to sink in a bit).

And they're very true to their flavor descriptions, as expected considering that their flavor descriptions could almost double as their ingredient lists! I was worried that the pear would overwhelm the blueberry flavor, but it really didn't - the blueberry was still the primary flavor.

Likewise, in the Pear Cranberry bar, the cranberry is the strongest flavor. You can even see, from the rich red color, that they use a good amount of cranberries!

There are many more varieties, including Apple Cherry, Apple Raspberry, Pear Strawberry, and their new Acai fruit line. I like having these bars with a handful of nuts as quick, light, on-the-go (or study) snack. Yum!

What's your advice for layering?

Do you eat dried fruits/fruit leather often? I love them, I eat so much of both!

Do you prefer dark/nude tights or bright/colorful tights?
